Now it's 30 years after Storm Mountain, but i still remember that day. I was riding with my crew in a filthy FS crummy down a rocky mountain road from our night shift on a fire on the Siskiyou NF in Oregon, and we were listening bleary-eyed to the radio news as the sun came up. When the newscaster mentioned 14 firefighters had died in Colorado, it was like a punch in our guts. We never met those people, but they were out brothers and sisters, and it hurt. Rest in peace, fellow firefighters- you are remembered.

Hearing your stories was difficult--Kathi Beck was one of my best friends and died in this fire. Can you tell me how anything you are promoting around safety would have addressed that there was a red flag wind warning issued the morning of July 6th that was not relayed to the firefighters? What has changed? Human error is, sadly, not avoidable at all times, but starting with good information is as important, or more important, than having good judgement. Thanks for any feedback.

This is a very moving video. Please watch and share with others. The ultimate sacrifice of these brave 14 men and women should mean something to you and other firefighters. Stay safe, stay alert and communicate. Remember the 10 and 18 so that you and others will go home at the end of day. EVERYONE GOES HOME!! Vegetation grows back, homes are rebuilt but you can't replace a firefighter.

A very interesting video. I agree with the situation and spacial awareness, so few have it now a days even in the Joe public. They have their heads in their mobile phones playing games or talking etc, they don't have a clue what is going on around them. Self awareness is so very easy to teach, I learnt mine through meditation and many hours in the woods of the UK. Hugs to you all and thanks from across the water for keeping everyone safe.

The Fire Shelter is no more than a pacifier. It does NOT work................ The Interagency Team needs to improve radio communications and increase lookouts to guide these crews to safety. Teamwork and speedy exit will improve your chances. Time to step back and fight these wildfires from a good distance. Avoid the shelter if all possible. Time to re-think Wildland Firefighting. This is a great video. RIP my brothers and sisters..

Incompetence kills!!! Why do we have 100, 150, 200 people fighting these fires that are over 180k hectors and a couple hitting 300k hectors. Where is the man power and resources? Once fall hits all we're going to hear is the "let it burn" policy.

This is so far from reality for us on the fireline. Or those of us that were tasked to break the line. Fire is insane and massive. The only strategy is to use air attacks. But the crazy folks will still send us in.....for front line eval
