Great interview! its funny Steve mentions humor in ones playing, its very true not a lot of people have it, in fact very few in my opinion. I always felt that about Greg's playing and how it had some of his sense of humor. Another good example of another master player that has that would be Steve Vai...Zappa as well.
Luke is one of the best players out there. Many things I loved as a kid, I revisited as an adult and went “oh that was Luke as we!!?!?” Yes he can shred, but the fact that he just threw iconic parts onto songs we know, virtually on the spot. That’s his genius.
Dude i'm in the same boat - until last week only knew of the guy, saw him on the Musicians museum interview, and i'm off to the races - Listening to way more Toto, started listening to his audiobook last night - already enjoying it immensely!
Unlike so called "professional" interviewers, Greg knows when to talk and when to let his guests speak. The respect he gets gives him the ability to ooze out very cool information from everyone he talks too. Gregory Steven Koch, a true legend with unlimited talent.
I've always loved guitar players that had a sense of humor and could make little "musical jokes". Joe Walsh comes to mind. Even Eddie had a few moments (I remember laughing out loud the first time I heard "On Fire" at the end of his solo when he makes a sound like a siren). Steve Vai has a pretty good sense of humor that shows up from time to time (Little Green Men, Ya Yo Gak, Kill The Guy With The Ball, the whole "talking guitar" stuff he does, ...). Humor is an important part of life.
"What is a 16 year old kid listening to know?" It's a good point but don't forget metal is still alive and well, always written by the band - still a very pure form of music.
I saw Scotty Anderson playing with a rock/country cover band. On the break he played some of the most stunning solo guitar. Chet Atkins with two sets of hands kind of stuff...
Steve is one of those guys that inspire you but you never try to play like him because it can’t be done any better than that so I need to play to my limitations because, fuck, I could never play that insane, bad ass guitar.
Luke should do "Luke's Online Guitar Cave" where he uploads tips and tricks or playing-related anecdotes, theory stuff that he deems useful or proved useful to him. Whatever was interesting him on that day. He could charge $29.95 per month. So many would go for it and he'd make dumptrucks and dumptrucks of cash. 2-3 two-minute clips per week. Recorded on his iPhone, no editing. People who don't have the name he does have done very well for themselves. But maybe he doesn't want to besmirch his legacy. Fair enough.
Lost count how many times I’ve emailed or instagrammed him asking for a book or lessons... between him, Carlton and Timmons. Thats my trinity of great players.
Right? Steve Porcaro can put a stop to it. Because he, Paich and Lukather are the only living founding members. And with Steve Porcaro being his blood brother too. I am glad Mike Pocaro's wife treats them like family
@@tinataylor1896 Steve Porcaro has no more power than Luke or Paich have. She took them to court and she won. It's just too bad Jeff didn't live long enough to divorce her.
@@BonnieHalfElven I think Luke was kinda hoping that too. In a interview Luke did. He had nothing nice to say about her. He said he would rather slit his throat than work with her. She wouldn't let them go on if she didn't have 100% say.
Another thing Lukather and Lee Sklar and Paich should do with the drummer of their choice: "L.A. Session Cats Play the Grateful Dead". They could make a couple, bucks, at least get paid well for their time, and also open up the gusher-fanbase that are DeadHeads.
This interview series is fantastic. Thanks. I’m 63 years old and my goal is to improve my playing to try and approach to some small degree your ability Greg.
63 here too and to try and get some of Greg’s magic channeled I’d probably need to get a Tele or Gristlemaster but I don’t like them ! 😟Always a big Luke fan , has the same attack as Gary Moore and that’s good enough for me 👍
Well here is the question are either of you guys as good as the Rock and Roll Accountant Alan Friedman ?? :-) He is having a special, free guitar lesson with every tax return.
