G&B's roving reporter Sam Atkins recently met up with Wilko Johnson and Norman Watt-Roy to talk gear and the importance of a great rhythm section. Here's what happened...
My Son has met Wilko many times since he was four. He’s 16 now and a quality guitarist due to Wilko,s influence. Cheers Wilko and thanks for signing Mikeys Telecaster. RIP.
Wilko always raises a smile .........I remember an interview years ago where he was asked what pedals he uses to which he replied " pedals? I'm a guitarist not a fucking cyclist!" ........:-)
'I'm supposed to be dead?' Lol...bless him. We all thank the universe that you are not. He doesn't seem to understand just how gifted he is. There will never be another Wilko...
Saw them in London a few years ago supporting The Frantic Four Quo line up - what an awesome evening- both great players - and we were lucky enough to have dinner after the gig at the next table in the kebab shop to Norman and his friends after the show - a great musician and a genuinely nice guy - we left him alone through dinner, he saw we spotted him and didn't hassle him, he chose to have a chat as we all left at the kebab shop at same time. As musicians in a band ourselves we had the classic "We're not worthy" moment.
What a joy it is to hear somebody who loves music keeping it really simple. Many of us spend a lot of time and money farting around with different amps, guitars, strings, picks and watching all the guitar reviews... but still never get the sound we want - probably because it doesn't exist anyway. I love Wilko. :)
Brother(blue) did sound for them live.I sat with them in changing room before the gig.Couple of diamonds.NWR on a fretless practicing next to me.Good night.Peace.
Have you ever seen two more crinkly lived in faces as these two, Who have seen and done it all? . OK Jagger & Richard . That aside . God Bless Wilko. Rest in Peace. Sorry for the loss of your friend Norman.
