Was plesantly surprised about the detector. I will say this however: I am 62 in a few months. I have learned that going for the cheap things in life can be discouraging. If you are getting into a hobby, spend the most amount you can afford. If you just go cheap then the chances are you will get discouraged and quit. It happens often. I was into metal detecting in the 70's and then had a military career followed by marine repair shops until I was disabled to the point that I cannot work now. I repicked up the hobby a couple of years ago and studied a lot. I wanted to not break the bank after all. Disability is not that much lol. Anyway, I was actually going for this exact or something very similar to it as my first detector. BIt then studied more. I ended up waiting a few months and saved up to get the vanquish 540 kit with the extra coil and accessories, bought another pinpointer (the 200 ft depth waterproof pulsedive pinpointer so I use that along with the minelab 20 that came with my 540 kit. Between them they are amazing. I learned the software in the 540 is basically the same as the nox 6 and 800 , just without as many bells and whistles. I knew I would want another detector as well for family and self. Something waterproof. So I started saving 2 years ago and was able to get the new Manticore... WOW! What a machine but with a steep learning curve. Maybe unlearning curve is more like it. So many think it is not grreat becasue they have a nox 800. The problem is, one is not the same as the other and you have to unlearn some things. lol Anyway, now I have been rambling. All I meant to say is get the best that you can afford and do not go cheap. Get someting like this AFTER you have a great machine and do comparisons then... If it is good, detect with your kids or wife or hubby doo. Have fun and do not give up....Update, guys n gals, I am not saying spend thousands, just spend what you can afford. There are great detectors out there for not a lot of cash, vanquish has a great 340 I think for 200. So does a few others. I just hated spending a hundred or two only to then spend more and then more on upgrading so that in the end I would spend more than just getting a fantastic on e in the first place... Make sense?

I started with an Amazon detector, it was a Sunpow that I got for Christmas and I bought a Simplex a few months later. The cheap ones are ok to find out if you really like the hobby, but you will spend more money once you decide you like it.

I agree with you Joe 100%. I really don't think I would be into the hobby today if I hadn't started with a cheap detector. Some people go for the big boys first but I'm glad I started with a cheap detector because without knowing if I liked the hobby I wouldn't have been willing to spend $200+ to find out.

I've had a few cheap detectors over the years. They are getting better. Soon they'll be as good as the expensive machines. I think you should note that there are a couple of features that are better on this cheap machine than, say a Garrett ace 250. It has backlit display, the control box is easy to attach, no screws to lose, it has cam locks on the control arm and a free digging tool. Also, it works. The main way to find lots of stuff is to detect where there is lots of stuff.

I used a bounty hunter platinum alongside a guy using an xp deus. I dug more coins on the same park as him. I'm not saying the bh platinum is a better detector than a deus lol, but it really matters on the person swinging the detector. If your starting out, get a detector, any of them, and stick with it for a while. Get to know the machine. You are the biggest variable in this hobby. And you don't cost a penny. Just practice, dig Everything in the beginning to understand what the machine is detecting, and enjoy yourself!

I enjoyed the video. Was curious as to how a 100 dollar detector would perform now days. Started out with a couple of cheap ones that I bought at yard sales etc. But finally steeped it up with a new Garrett several years ago. Don't recall model. Not there top of the line but was a lot of money to me. Just wanted to say here, I can't knock bounty hunter though. I now have a bounty hunter time ranger, the original version. I got it from amazon. At the time the time ranger had been discontinued but available on amazon and I got a great price on it. My understanding is that it was bounty hunter's flag ship detector up until just before then. I still have it and love it. It is awesome! It is feature rich and I watched and read a lot on the time ranger and put in the time learning the machine. It was worth it. I love it.

I bought a bounty hunter land ranger pro a while back, for around $200. I can tell you I would've rather spent $100 and got one of those off brand ones on Amazon. You try to put the sensitivity all the way up you get a lot of beeping/chatter. Very shortly after I bought a Fisher F75, and a Minelab Vanquish 540 (that Ive yet to use since I been taking the F75 everywhere). The F75 I can crank sensitivity up as high as it'll go and it is very quiet. Found a lot of civil war relics with it.
@baneverything5580
@baneverything5580 2 года назад
The Land Ranger Pro competes well with the AT Pro in depth. You only run them at full sensitivity if you can. If it chatters turn sensitivity down. Some detectors don`t do well around power lines, WIFI, etc. There are some amazing 100 dollar (or less) Bounty Hunter detectors. See the Fast Tracker. Hits silver dimes deep.

I've been watching reviews leading up to a purchase. This is better than most, but none are very good to be honest. So I've also been designing tests as I watch. Here's my thoughts. ... cz I won't be doing one. lol Get a bunch of 5 gallon pails, fill with soils, gravels, rocks. Some with layers of 2 or 3 of the strata. Have a hose handy, then repeat them under water. Different variations can be done, metals etc. and have some bigger rocks, and put the coins under them directly, and on some pails. Also have a control unit for comparison, like the best one you own. Put the same material at different heights in different materials. Also make the rocks and gravels varieties which have high metallic content. Sun, shade temperature? Idk if any of that affects it, i.e. reflection off rocks maybe. Battery quality, time vs. features vs. usage. Coil flexibility, like can you put different coils, would you want to, can quality be improved with new coil. For me, important is, the priority components and stats a pro would look at if buying a gift for a beginner. Idk detectors but as an example, PCs, we'd look at RAM, HDD, SSD, processor Hz and cores, the rest is personal choices tailored to your needs, which you can't address everyone's needs in a review. Then you only have to decide what to spend, and when to stop wanting better quality cz you have good quality basics. .. You, know, for detectors, maybe, 'You don't want a nickel or aluminum coil, they suck. Make sure it is a copper, and at least 700nnm. But really, you should find a 12nnm or better. and a indication spectrum analyzer... lol, just made it up, but you get it. That's the review I need on any product, most don't do it. Peace
@blackopal3138
@blackopal3138 2 года назад
After all that, lol, I thought the penny was poetic. And then, lmao, you immediately reinforced that, wit the 'let's get goin, 10 mins, yadda yadda", cz it was exactly 10 mins, lol. ... a poetic penny. Close chapter 1. Chapter 2 - Penny Dreadful lol

Looks like a decent beginners detector and the little Army shovel is a decent digging tool. I think the consensus of Military would say that type of shovel works good as they have been in service for years. My wife got me my first detector from fingerhut it is one of those books that sell cheap crappy items and yes it worked but oh my god it was so annoying. I would disagree about getting a cheap pin pointer get a good brand as the cheap ones most of the time are just junk and you want something dependable or just stick to searching without. Just my opinion. I have bought and used some of the cheap ones and none have lasted at all. I have had two Garrett's the original black one and now the Carrot and love them both.

Good points steve and good point about the pinpointer I have had mixed luck with those cheap pinpointers the first one I ever got still works amazing to this day however I got 2 more exactly like it and BOTH always beeped when you turned it upside down even if there was nothing there. So definitely can be lack of quality control in the cheap stuff. Always nice to hear everyones opinion, we all have different experiences good to bring them all together. All in all I would say if the option to save up for a better detector or pinpointer is there definitely do it but if you have a 20 dollar amazon gift card go for one of those cheap pointers it saved me lots and lots of time for sure. Love the garrett carrot 👍 I remember fingerhut when I was younger, I bet I know a few people that still owe them money! 🤣 ah the good days lol! thanks steve

@@TreasureOutdoors Then again we have so many rules on where you can and can't detect. Can't do it on public or council owned land, and not on known archaeological sites. Basically you need to get permission from a private landowner. If you do find a potential archaeological treasure, it has to be declared by law. Coins and stuff is usually okay, unless you're lucky enough to find a hoard, then that has to be declared. I've picked up a few medieval coins (Edward groats), but one of the first people who got me into detecting found a Saxon coin from King Aethelred's reign...10th century! I'm still hopeful of finding a Roman coin some day, though a hoard would be better. :)

You can find anything with a $50 detector. A ring 💍 or bracelet. If it’s a couple inches deep maybe 2-6 inches. For a basic search that’s all you need.

Absolutely true!! I found a gold bangle bracelet with the simplex within the first couple of weeks owning it but I bet even a cheap detector would have gotten it because the shape was a perfect circle. Right on man 👍

Mine is vibration shock sensitive . Point mine at the ground and with a slight shake it beeps . I have tk be steady gentle swinging it around . Each detectition beep is 2 beeps . High and low beep in a pair . At first try i thougjt it just kept beeping and beeping and could not find a keyring on the driveway . But i think i am getting the hang of it . Cement might interfere.

They’ll all find stuff, it’s just a matter of how deep and whether or not it can pull good items from dense trash areas. You can also buy cheaper detectors that keep up with the heavy hitters, like the Simplex, Vanquish, and X-Terra Pro. Personally, if I had starting over to do over again, I’d not settle for less than one of those 3.

I can probably agree with you there... those machines you named I think will give a beginner quite a bit of a better experience overall.. but those off-brands will find stuff too.

Simple answer, yes it will find things. It may not work as well, or have the features of more expensive units, but it will work. It's kind of unrealistic to expect a base unit to perform to high end standards. It's like expecting a stock vehicle to compete with a dragster. Not going to happen.

For a $100 get a bounty hunter tracker 4. They're not pretty or fancy but they're rock solid for the price. There are people who have found lots of rings on beaches using it and considering it's price it more than pays for itself.

Thanks for the demo of the A-typical amazon detector. I personally would not go near them. I would save a little bit more, just wait one month and buy a Garrett ACE or whatever bottom range detectors you can get from a specialist company over there in the US. I feel people who do get into the hobby with one of those will end up 'buying twice' sooner rather than later. I struggle encouraging people to by 'Chinese designed' products, usually they are copies of copies with a no-name brand sticker slapped on it. No measure of quality or testing, one Ricomax detector may work better or worse than the next Ricomax detector. Honestly thanks for the demo though. Reinforces my thoughts on them. Looking forward to your next video :) Can the Ricomax find a gold or silver ring at decent depth? :)
@TreasureOutdoors
@TreasureOutdoors 3 года назад
At the end of the day I do agree with you, the thing I will say is sometimes saving up won't be an option especially for the younger gen who might want one as a present. Sometimes it's either 100 bucks take it or leave it and I would say in that case I would rather have this detector than nothing at all. I started with an old school no screen just knobs garrett I snagged at a garage sale for $3 and I probably used it 3 or 4 times and it did end up in the closet but what it did for me was expand my interest in the hobby and I started learning about all the different machines on the market / people involved in it and from there I was hooked! I appreciate it dave 👍 I'm definitely interested in testing it a bit further, see if it's possible to even beep over a gold ring 🤣 A family did approach me while I was unboxing it and said they had one just like it but didnt know how to use it so I bet there are a lot of these in closets around the world lol

I got the separate pin pointer, but the little built in pin Pointer on the vanquish is amazing! I finally switched over. First I tried an Amazon pancky brand with a built in pin pointer, and it was literally trash! The problem with the amazon brands like this one, is they are no good on beach, wet sand.

@TreasureOutdoors

I agree dan, sometimes it makes me think both ways would this detector make someone give up on the hobby? Or would this detector give someone a chance that would have never had a chance otherwise to try the hobby and get hooked... in my experience I am the second case. I got a super cheap detector first (don't think I would have ever forked out $250 bucks without trying the hobby first) sat in the closet for a while but it sparked my interest in learning about the other detectors on the market and really got me into the metal detecting community here on YT. DEFINITELY not gonna be used much but I will have the one I used in the video to giveaway also if I choose. Maybe I can keep it in the trunk and do something like you did, once a kid starts to follow me around for enough time and show enough interest I will pull out the ricomax and send it their way. 😊 Gonna drag it out to the beach for a few minutes on my next hunt, see how it acts out there. Appreciate you stopping in!!

My first detector was a Radio Shack cheap-o.... It was very good at finding pull tabs and other trash like, bottle caps and old syringes,(a public beach on the central CA beaches)... That was about It for my metal detecting career...I took it back and got a full refund as it was in immaculate condition...I'm not dedicated enough to shell out the big bucks for a top of the line detector... Too old (74) for hours of walking around In the soft sand... like watching the real guys finding real stuff with a ring or jewelry every now and then... For me, it's a spectator sport nowadays... Thanks for letting me tag along.🙏🌹🕊️

Lots of good machines out there, I hear the bounty hunter series is good for under $100. In my own experience around $200 the "Minelab Vanquish" is a pretty great starter machine as well as the "garrett ace 200" or even the "Nokta Simplex"👍I also hear some good choices for young kids are the "midi hoard" or the "go-find" GOOD LUCK!!

The American made cheap Bounty Hunters are quality, tough, long lasting machines with a 5 year warranty and great service. The Fast Tracker, an extremely simple two knob analog machine, hits silver dimes at 8+ inches.

I've found things with a $50 analog aliexpress junk detector. It's not ideal, not very sensitive but hey they did it in the 1970s with stuff like that. It even could sorta distinguish between iron scrap and nickel coins. I ended up giving it to my 10y old nephew for when he goes to the beach.
