Another great video with Ivan. I've been in IT for 22 years as a full time job, but in computers since the mid 90's. What you said about adapting is spot on. I'm the infrastructure person (among other things) at my current job. I do everything from installing servers for our VMWare environment to configuring switches. Even though I don't think we will be full cloud I have learned AWS and Azure. Our devs use AWS and they only code. They don't have any idea how networking works. I think you will still need people who understand the different layers.

Not really let met explain, have you built a full network in Azure yet? Try it with their free learn sandbox, then you'd realize that you don't need as much knowledge as you thought about the lower levels of the OSI layer, basic N+,CCNA is already too much to be able to build a SME business network in Azure. I feel a far better skill is to be able to code rather than being CCIE level network jocky. Infrastructure engineers aren't your standard network/system engineers anymore, they now are cloud engineers and must be able to code. I can't remember the last time I heard in a new business people are running traditional equipment... everything is serverless/cloud, no capital expenditure anymore, just running costs. Learn cloud if you want a job in the next 5-10 years as everyone is moving to cloud at a rapid pace. Even company branch rollouts are easy with products like Meraki and the like where everything is GUI, everyone is moving this way as it is just ridiculous to think being in the CLI is an efficient way of working, I proved this to my colleague whom was a 4xCCIE, I was able to configure multiple switches and routers/ap's/firewalls/IDS ect in one go and he was still not even 10% into configuring his setup and I was getting live reporting data at a click of a mouse. Sorry but traditional ways are dying out and coding skills are far more important with the world we are moving into of high availability.
@nonya13
@nonya13 3 года назад
@@kazykamakaze131 I agree that coding is a huge plus since a lot of AWS and Azure need it for things like serverless, templates, etc. But I also beleive you need to know the basics. Otherwise how will you troubleshoot when things go wrong?
@kazykamakaze131

Currently A.I is a consultancy or an initializer tool, that is, do something until complete, unless told to stop. Left to their own devices, machines do nothing forever . When A.I becomes self aware, inquisitive self learning, problem solving, event initializer and a creative entity in it own right, then that's it for employment. Hopefully, that's a long way off.

-Great content. -As I saw in the interview that Chuck did with the CEO of the technical part of a big ISP she said that and I will put exactly what she said: - "Soon we will visualize the network infrastructure after the installation of the 5G transmitters, and after that 1 network engineer just using this SDN and SDWAN will do the work of 10 engineers today which will RELEASE THESE ENGINEERS FOR OTHER WORKS ". -In translating her entire sentence with a Brazilian say because "shes putting the crazy" in this of RELEASING ENGINEERS, in fact what she said is that whoever does not evolve and does not learn new technologies and Devnet will not work there and will be released (fired). -Our profession is just evolving as the Systems Administrator has evolved to still have the CLI as a base skill but as the infrastructure has evolved to Cloud why the medium has evolved, not that there are no local server add-ons but in small companies with local infrastructure o Cloud has not yet arrived as SDN Cisco has not yet arrived in all companies but the big ones are already there. -For this reason I am studying Python in a serious way to make my Devnet including thinking about making a certification in the Python language. -As was said by the teacher in the video IA do not end with professions they just reduce the work of those who know about the additional knowledge of operation of this technology beyond the base area. -Exactly what Professor Ivan said a woodcutter who only knows how to use an ax is a woodcutter but not a woodcutter who is hired nowadays must know how to use a chainsaw or heavy machines to cut trees are more value then a worker how only know chainsaw. -Thanks for the knowledge teachers David and Ivan ... !!!

Put another way, I think he’s emphasizing the importance of being a generalist. While I’d agree there’s something to be said for being a generalist / full stack engineer, it is another thing being good at each field. What I’m coming to realize in my environment alone is that there is enough to keep me occupied with learning route and switch for some time. That doesn’t stop me at learning python (Queue David Bombals course) but it’s kind of dessert atm. I think my junior network perspective is to give time to master areas, as well as build curiosity for other areas.

AI will replace network ADMINS but not network ENGINEERS. Admins perform repeatable linear tasks which AI excels at, engineers solve complex problems and develop solutions. AI so far is not good at that, even several years later.

Mm very interesting take on this. I expanded away from just R/S and added onto Collaboration and wireless. Makes me wonder what direction and changes can occur on this side of unfied communication. Should I continue to invest in this area or move to something. A lot of video/call are now app based via internet. Do you even need a PBX now? Sip trunks? Hmm. Interesting take. Been thinking about going into security but I don't see like content for CCNP security. You must be booked and so little time haha. Is that a course you'll have or what other sources can one look without spending huge amounts of money. Nonetheless, great topic. Always readjusting where the next focus of area should be.

I differ from what this guy is saying, when AI takes all the low end jobs then you have a forced labor force also trying to get jobs in the more "intelligent" jobs, especially now that university access is much easier with loans and also free information access on the internet. The reason we have much more programmers is not because of more university grads but because of the internet. I work in AI/cloud and also used to work as a network engineer so I have a unique viewpoint of this subject. Asking network engineers with 0 AI experience is not helpful advise as they have 0 idea what is happening in the cutting edge of the industry of AI. These people don't understand that AI is not just machine learning in a traditional manner, but rather with new neural networks we have entire industries at threat of being replaced and all is needed in certain industries is someone/group to build a good enough product that is innovative which others in the same industry will copy and use to improve. There is a reason communications/network industry has changed so much and it is because cloud is taking over and cloud is heavily made up of AI models, you think your cost management recommendations in azure is hard coded? no, no ,no sorry. The reason AI didn't take over in the 1960-90's is because we had lack of computing power and lack of sufficient data, same things your brain needs to function. Now we have both and look at how rapidly the computing industry is changing over night. I 100% believe network engineers are in danger of losing their jobs, not just because of AI but because of the tooling that is also created. It is significantly easier to create/manage large scale networks than ever before and your require even less engineers to manage even large networks than 5-10 years ago, meaning you have less jobs than before and more people battling for the same jobs. Jobs are becoming scarcer not in the sense of amount but in the sense of getting paid a living wage. Go look in africa how little network engineers get paid and then realize they can do the same job as the 6 figure engineers in the US or europe and as seeing remote work is taking over, be careful that someone living on a 20th of what a US resident lives on can now take your job, this can be seen by the massive new office Amazon built in south africa and they have hired a LOT of staff to work there already.

How can we apply AI and Machine learning in Networks or Systems? Does a good Network Engineer needs to be a good Data scientist as well?
@seano7173
@seano7173 3 года назад
You, do not have to be a good Data Scientist to become a great network engineer. Will all of the theories, topologies, packet capture etc... It is hard to remember all of those things. Especially the things you do not use on a day to day basis. What matters most is knowing where to look and utilize the resources you have available to you. Speaking of AI and Machine learning, that can be scary. I've seen the movement of network automation and machine learning. The thing is AI and machine learning can speed up the process of your job but there are things automation cannot do. At the end of the day, we still have the advantage such as doing the physical stuff and logical t.shoot.
@rikoviko1800
@rikoviko1800 3 года назад
@@seano7173 I believe AI and machine learning will make any field more interesting. For example in networks you have an etherchannel setup and you can monitor it via a command via python saving results in some file(You machine has started learning).You can instruct your code to change the default link selection method if the bundle is making use of one of the links a lot more than the others(AI). These kind of things have endless possibilities in my opinion and it will only go forward from here. You can apply these type of bot codes all over your IT environment. Monitoring systems e.g. use simple but effective AI.

@davidbombal

I think you are missing the point of the videos. In the previous interview with Ivan you need to listen to the last few minutes as he sums up nice that you will always need Network Engineers. In this video I am answering questions that people have asked about AI. Again, AI will not replace network engineers that do intelligent work or make themselves unique, but rather people that do repetitive work - I would rather warn you about what's coming and is happening in the industry instead of telling you nothing and then you get blindsided by changes. I believe in riding waves like I did with VoIP /Collaboration. That still used my network knowledge, but added to it. In this industry you cannot stop learning. That is the nature of the game. I hope that helps?

AI will not replace someone who can understand and implement a set of business requirements. All the AI automation tools in the network space seem to be largely proprietary and vendor-centric, which I am not a huge fan of. It’s the new lock-in.

Most people would download the test from some site and memorize the answers to get the cert that way. It's what you have studied and learnt during your journey to passing the test that will benefit you in the long run, not the cert itself.

Why do you always seem to agree with your guest rather than to challenge him on some of his ideas. I do know you have to be diplomatic but this really reduces your credibility as a professional. Thanks for all your hard work.
@davidbombal
@davidbombal 3 года назад
You need to listen carefully - I don't agree with everything Ivan says. In the previous video I said - "we have a different viewpoint" multiple times. But, I'll create another video to address this if people think it is necessary. I can either get guests to explain what they think; or turn an interview into an argument which will help no one. I like to get people to share their thoughts even if I don't always agree. Did you see the interviews with Neal and Daniel - I really put them in the hotseat in those interviews.
