Aussie here, recently had a DNA match to the niece of a former Australian Prime Minister. He's my 4th cousin once removed, I guess he's kind of famous, although the way he disappeared and the mystery surrounding his disappearance back in the 60's is way more infamous.
hi jason, i happened upon you totally by accident, and i wanted to tell you that my grt, grt grandmother was a cowley, we THINK. her daughter was a carroll(do you have any carrolls in your tree?) she came over from england to the usa in the later 1800s. her daughter (my nana), was born a poole in 1895, and was a child of the 2nd marriage after the 1st husband(a galloway) died, and was 1st generation american. how do you pronounce your last name? we have always said 'cooley', even though its spelled the same as yours. well, no need to respond if you havent found any corresponding names i have mentioned, or you just dont want to. have a great day...........dawn conner(a west virginia hillbiiy)
WikiTree also has the ability to tell you how you are related to someone else (famous or just ordinary fabulous) and every week features a selection of famous people around a common theme. Next week it will be famous Christmas crooners like Bing Crosby. WikiTree also has the option to show how you are connected via marriages to people , in case you are not an actual cousin. For example, Henry the 8th is my 8th great grandfather’s sister-in-law’s 3rd great grandmother’s sister-in-law’s father-in-law.
I had ancestry years ago and got a "celebrity match" notification, however, they later removed that feature (this was before that silly app they made). I've tried to trace this person through ancestry.com and cannot make a connection any longer, even though she was on my tree. I found some other family trees that show her name, but they have no publicly available family members, so I cannot access them to see if they match. Maybe some celebrities who have ancestry try to keep it private from the weirdos hehe.
It's likely that celebrities hide their identities online. You could also try using FamilySearch and finding a deceased celebrity (or the deceased parents/grandparents of the living celebrity). If you've built your family tree on FamilySearch, then you can click "View Relationship" on the celebrity or their kin and see how you might be related. I wouldn't call the celebrity up and say you're kin though. It's possible the links are inaccurate somewhere along the line.
Famous people never put their real name on Ancestry sites. They use nicknames or Initials. I recently found this out from someone related to someone famous.
I discovered that I'm a 7th cousin thee times removed of F.D.R. and a 3rd cousin seven times removed of Martin VanBuren, but only by following the record trail and only then because the ancestry of both of these people is well established as connected to a common family (Van Dusen, Van Duzen, Van Duersen, spellings vary). I did have one moderate DNA match to a living Roosevelt that helped to show that the record trail was correct.
A USA cousin built a tree back to the Bowes Lyons ancestors of Queen Elizabeth ii: it appears we are her distant cousins. A person with the same name as the bassist from Queen appears to be my fourth cousin. A Paul Hogan is GD of 5 on gedcom. A princess Marie- Louise is about 3rd to 5th cousin on Ancestry.
I’m related to Albert Rostron Parker AKA Ross Parker who co wrote 2 major hits for Vera Lynn. Ross was a musician/actor and appears in the film ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’. Ross also appeared in many UK tv programs. Ross was my 1st cousin 2x removed
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics the history of the ‘Alice Blue Gown’ was written with Ross’s wife to be in mind. I have a picture of Ross and his wife sitting at a piano with his wife stood at his side watching Ross. I have a DNA connection with one of Ross’s direct ancestors. Ross comes from my paternal grandmothers side of the family
I didn't catch this in person, so couldn't comment during chat. I think I am actually related to Steve Martin and several other people if their trees were correct on We're Related. That was an app that was done through Facebook and Ancestry discontinued it over a year ago. I did have the person in my tree who is supposed to be my MRCA with Steve Martin. It was a fun thing, but not to be taken too seriously. You can do something similar at the Family History Center in SLC, Utah.
I think Devon shared a link to a FamilySearch based famous relatives website. If she didn't, we can pick on her. There's also a way to click on famous people in FamilySearch and see how you're related. As you know Patricia, I'm the DNA guy and I always look through these questions from that lens. There isn't a way that any of the companies can tell you if you're genetically related to a celebrity unless said famous person makes their DNA and family tree open to public viewing.
Probably because I was solely focused on AncestryDNA and whether you could see your genetic celebrity matches. Devon needs to make a video about the "View My Relationship" video in 2021. Thanks for giving me an idea for her.
On FamilyTreeDNA, me and my dad both matched Steven Spielberg's father with autosomal DNA. I know for sure it is his father. However, we probably only matched him because all Ashkenazi Jews are genetically similar due to centuries of endogamy, and we probably don't share a RECENT common ancestor with him.
Shortly after Ronald Reagan was elected President, he appointed Donald Regan as his Treasury Secretary. Genealogists quickly discovered that Reagan and Regan were tenth cousins. Immediately, there were cries of nepotism in the press. Bias, much? I'm certain the two men didn't know they were related at all. I remember Gore Vidal once announcing that he had just discovered that Jimmy Carter was his fifth cousin--and how surprised he was while making the announcement.
I was doing a tree in ancestry then Churchills and Spencers started popping up on my dads side after more research I found I may be a descendent of the Spencer-Churchill line the same line of Winston Churchill and Princess Diana… I’ve never been to England in my life
Keep validating the research on your family tree and do deep record gathering. Sometimes (I'm not saying that's the case with you) people will seem related based on a few records only to discover they aren't related with additionally record gathering. Hillary Clinton's great-grandparents were confused with a person with the same name in the same town. Fixing the tree changed her heritage.
I'm a distant relative of Oliver Hardy, but I only learned that from actually working on my ancestry tree over the years. I wish I could figure out what is the most legit. MyTrueAncestry I hear has that "hapologroup" thing, and I have no idea what that means if anything. It says I'm linked to Hitler and Stalin in some way. Yikes. hahaha
I wouldn't worry about haplogroups, they aren't as helpful as the companies that advertise them suggest. I wouldn't recommend any genetic genealogy website other than MyHeritage, 23andMe, Ancestry, Living DNA, and FamilyTreeDNA for discovering your heritage. As for who you're related to, my wife and I are related to a number of 'famous folks' but we don't put too much faith in those lines as after 1700 the research isn't necessarily trustworthy.
CRI Genetics has a famous people thing, but they don’t tell you “______ is your 10th cousin” they list which celebrities or historical figures share the Haplogroup genes or DNA with you.
That company is more on the science end with the DNA, but it would be more interesting to know where those famous people fall and what the relation is.
Is there any way to genetically see any old notable relatives in history(not current living)? Someone told me they were related to Mary Antoinette somehow, but I have no idea how they found this information and I’m quite interested. Thanks
You could do this on FamilySearch. They have an app. www.familysearch.org/blog/en/famous-relatives/ You can also find a famous deceased relative and then click on the "View Relationship" button on FamilySearch. Be advised that you have to log in and build your family tree as far as you can. Once you connect to your deceased ancestors, you might find that they are already in the tree. Also, recognize that FamilySearch can not guarantee the paths of relationship are accurate. Remember, it's built on papers and sometimes the paper trail (or the researcher) is wrong.
I am related to Stewart's with two variations of the name and all stewards are related to Mary Queen of scots. And it's very interesting I am related to the Stewart Family on both sides of my family on my mom's side and my dad's side. I think it's really interesting that there are a lot of families that I am related to multiple times on both sides of my family and sometimes the same family on both sides several times.
Being related to multiple families isn't particularly uncommon the further back in time you go. In colonial areas, families intermarried because the population wouldn't survive if they didn't. In small towns in England (like St. Keverne), few people traveled far from home so people intermarried with who was in town. In short, the further back in time you go, the inability for people to travel far from home decreased the population pool of which they could intermix.
I’m also related to Mary on both parents' trees. Great grand aunt on one, 14th great grandmother on the other. Her half brother is my 15th great grandfather. What are the odds? 😂
Found out I was 2nd cousins with Washington on my moms side and 3rd cousins with Grant on my dads side. Also very distantly related to Elvis and Churchill.
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics Family search I also used Wiki to make sure they were accurate. Apperently on their everyone is somewhat related to someone famous and theyre not always completely accurate. It is funny though my Grandfather on my dads side does look just like Ulysses S Grant lol.
On Mom's side we are related to the Servoss family of actors -- Mary Servoss of Hollywood and the stage and her sister Alita Servoss a stage actress and her husband Walter Barnes, a stage actor, primarily known locally in Chicago because Walter and the Servoss daughters' mother, Mary (Baker) Servoss (sister to my great great great grandfather, Silas Thomas Baker) struggled over a gun that went off fatally injuring Mary and wounding (but not killing) her daughter Alita (Servoss) Barnes in the Wychmere Hotel in Chicago. Barnes fled but was later apprehended and served time for the shooting and other crimes. On Dad's side we're related to the Trucks family of Bibb and Jefferson counties, Alabama, including baseball player, Virgil Trucks and several of his professional musician relatives.
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics Well I do sing, play guitar and write songs (lyrics and music) so maybe THAT is a tradition with the earlier Trucks? Virgil's grandparents, Joseph Marion Trucks and Elizabeth Jane Lindsay were brother and sister to my great-great grandparents, William Joseph Lindsay and Margaret Ada Trucks. I found the huge probate record in Bibb County, Alabama for our mutual ancestor, George Joseph Trucks. It mentions ALL of his children and grandchildren. Maybe he was talented musically? HIS son, Francis Marion Trucks (father of aforementioned Joseph Marion and Margaret Ada) was mortally wounded at Sharpsburg. His widow, Appy Caroline (Cottingham) Trucks remarried William Hawkins and had more children with him. THEY relocated to Chalkville area, Jefferson Co, AL. My dad was born in New Castle, Jefferson Co, AL. TONS of connections and roots there. Marriages and remarriages. There must have been something in the water in New Castle I think. ;-)
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics Actually it wasn't me, but, my grandfather, Frankie Jernigan also used to play baseball. He was with the New Castle baseball team and he was a pitcher. His nickname was "Footsie." He was tall and very thin and one person saw him play said he was really something to watch him pitch. His style was very distinctive according to what this person said. Possibly somewhat ironic that he was watching a baseball game on TV when he had a massive heart attack and died in 1982. I was at the Presidio of Monterey in California and got the message to call home and was told the news. I don't know if my grandfather "Papa" ever met Virgil Trucks. I don't know if he ever knew they were related on his mother's Lindsay side. I would say it's likely that he saw Virgil play while watching games on TV.
My friend is 2nd cousins to Don Lemon and he showed as a dna match under a username that only had his surname in it. I'm related to the rapper slim thug and he showed up under his real name.
Don't send the DNA to me, send it to the genetic genealogy company. But, I think your question is better address in this video that we recorded a few years back. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-beI-A7G5baw.html
Maybe famous people avoid taking the test or fake their true names, because they feel they would be flooded with a Christmas list of wants by distant relatives they don't know. Ha!
