Will Blackthorn make a 100lb Warbow? The ultimate primitive technology weapon. Part One. Primitive Technology from the Hedgerow. Blackthorn (prunus spinosa) is one of the commonest shrubby trees to be found along tens of thousands of miles of English hedgerows. Related to the plum, blackthorn famously blossoms in early spring and sparkles the hedgerows with dazzling white blossom for a few brief weeks. I have made one bow from blackthorn, a powerful short bow drawing ninety pounds. Now I have a longbow length of straight blackthorn - but will it make a 100lb medieval style Warbow? I use a yew warbow at the beginning and end of this video as well as a medieval style low fletched arrow armed with a hand-forged type 10 arrow head by fletcher and arrowsmith Will Sherman.

Been busy here getting riverbanks and swims cut for the start of the fishing season with the club. Hi Dooley. The bark-on outcome is for me still hit and miss. Managed about four so far, three hazel and one blackthorn. Looks great I think so I’ll try to solve the process. Linked I think to time of year felled but I’ve had success with both winter and summer felled so possibly also linked to seasoning.

Thanks a lot for your informative videos, I've always loved the idea of using yew but it seems such a nightmare to find anything straight enough over a reasonable length, also knots seem to be a problem with yew and maybe that's why we imported yew staves back in the day.
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 4 года назад
Yes, often yew trees grow in such a way as to make finding a decent stave almost impossible.i think we imported yew because of its quality - slow and high grown yew is superior when compared to faster growing lowland yew found in the UK for example. Thanks for watching.

I’ve never used blackthorn, however most of the woods I’ve used or have researched the heartwood is typically better used in a bow. There are exceptions, hickory the sapwood is actually stronger and more elastic then the heartwood. I guess it really depends on the grain pattern of blackthorn. If it’s an interlocking grain then you’ll probably be fine. Ah what do I know anyways wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been wrong. Best of luck bud.

I always remove the bark. If the tree is felled in the spring/summer, the sap is up and bark is easily removed. In some woods, especially Ash or Elm most of it can be pulled off by hand leaving a full tree ring as the back of the bow. Less chance for the back to fail.
@MickGrewcock

Cant help but wondering if any of the other prunus can make a bow?.. prunus nigra is a common garden item here,.. also rows upon rows of plums apricots etc. i could maybe wangle some decent branches. Im having a really bad run, all of my attempts with aus wood have failed either catastrophically or over time with set and or slow cracks. Got one with a heap of set that still fires ok at 50lb ish ... just cant nail a keeper thus far. Im starting on a new project tomorow, another Hickory wattle that was left standing after roadside clearing. It has the sweetest curve I have seen yet, i cant wait to fell it. Some questions and a comment. How long is this bow and what is width at center? Where did you found layout for initial dimensions for this bow? Have you made galleon cross section or did you just round off corners? Anyway, the bow looks really good. I haven't seen such a straight blackthorn here. Most look like something that grows in Mordor. You made me do for a next bow one with the bark intact. I wish you good fortune in upcoming work on it.
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 6 лет назад
Hi there. It is 76" overall. I based dimensions on the maximum depth that the stave allowed and added about 20% to get a width at the central portion which is about 16" overall about the centre. Constant taper from belly to tips, constant taper from ends of central portion to about 8" from the tips then a more aggreive taper to tips. I am using a dimensioning method suggested by a highly respected bowyer. Yes, blackthorn rarely gets to grow straight - it's either cut during hedging or just grows to the light by any route it can find. No idea how it'll turn out but I guess I'll soon find out.

Why did they use such heavy bows in combat?? Thanks, Daniel
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 4 года назад
Daniel Fisher Two reasons from what I understand. 1) As opposing forces developed better protection - mael, armour etc - arrow heads had to be designed which could penetrate. Stronger armour = tougher arrow heads. These, inevitably, grew heavier over time. To combat the terrific inertia of a heavy arrow head, bigger shafts were needed. The combination of heavy head and thicker shaft required powerful bows to deliver them. 2) Distance. To propel a heavy arrow over long distances (maybe 200-300 yards) requires a high draw weight bow. No one knows for certain but research based bows recovered from 15th Century warship Mary Rose suggests ‘typical’ longbows (call them English or Welsh as you wish) might have had draw weights 150-180lbs. Currently a small number of highly trained UK longbow archers frequently use 100lb plus ‘warbows’ whilst competing in the ancient sport of roving marks - and and a couple of elite archers have proven that 200lb bows can be drawn. Thanks for watching.

Hi Steve, yes it is - not the thickest piece but nice all the same! Mick
@stlong001
@stlong001 6 лет назад
Mick Grewcock as I understand in through what I’ve learned, that’s the strongest part of the bowl because as the tree grew, where it’s thinner is where the tree bore a load. In the branch (baugh) it’s usually the top, in the trunk (bowl) it’s usually the side facing prevailing winds. As such, that’s usually the strongest cut. That’s what I’ve learned at least. Haven’t had near as much experience as you but I’m soaking up as much knowledge as I can.

Wow nice peace so far. Its funny i was thinking of making a "warbow" too. So far ive made shorter bows. Max pull so far is hickory at 60 pounds. Id like to make a new one longbow style and see just how strong it can be. Ive heard that the Cheerokee people had wat they concederd a long bow that could pull up to 100pounds. They used black locust

Pretty good videos. Interestingly presented. My main gripe is your overuse of slowmos tho - I think thered be a better, more watchable flow if you halved the number of slowmo shots. I mean, how many shots do we need of some geezer caressing his wood in slow motion?! Kinda weird

GR8 Start on you're new bow Mike :-) BUT? Have you, or can you publish the dimensions of the initial roughing out (with the jig saw) of the half split stave of around 80 inches that you have and you work from? I have mine ready for that (Yew) but some books say taper the ends at first...and some say not? You seem to prefer parallel cutting from end to end. Advice req. for a V.novice Apprentice Bowyer ;-) if you please Sir. Thanks again.

@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 6 лет назад
Hi there! Ha, the challenge of where to start. It was always a big puzzle to me and I found my own way but was always dissatisfied with the tiller. This time I am using a dimensioning guide used by a very well respected bowyer. I shall not name him yet in case I make mess of it but, if I get a bow from it, I shall give him full credit in the respective video. This is what I am doing. I figured out what the stave will achieve in depth and width first - in this case, the blackthorn is actually less thick than I would have liked so I worked with what I'd got. So the width at the grip is 20% thicker than the max thickness. I have always made the centre section parallel but this time it's a longer section - 16" centred upon the geometric middle of the stave parallel in width all 16". I have always tapered constantly from belly to tips - but this time thicker than I'd normally be at the tips - 18mm instead of my normal 12mm. Constant thickness taper from end of the parallel section to about 9" from tips, then aggressive width taper from that point to tip also a 18mm. This should work for yew, still not sure about blackthorn. Hope that helps.

Watch Ryder I think the 85lb / 100lb assumptions are modern. Evidence from recreated Mary Rose longbows indicates maybe 150-180 lbs might have been a truer figure. We will never know for sure.

@@MickGrewcock Yeah those super-heavyweight warbows are probably capable of giving Milanese plate armor a run for its money. The evidence for the 85lber warbows comes from some pre-Mary Rose examples which were late 1400s, early 1500s examples. Fascinating to think were the warbows would have taken us had firearms not become more developed...

@@MickGrewcock Yeah, can't armor against them easily compared to bows, and they allow the coward to kill. That being said, they can be a good equalizer. Until recently I had a license to conceal carry them over the pond too. I don't think we'll see an end to the firearm conundrum until a breakthrough in technology negates them, maybe?

Watch Ryder That’s a big hope. The conundrum will be with us a long time yet.

Beautiful Wood Mick! Why are you leaving a bark? (It is an unnecessary material). How long have you dried such a rough trunk? Good luck! ;)

I love the bark on appearance. I've made hazel and blackthorn with bark on and I like the contrast between bark and wood! Thanks for watching. Mick

This music actually destroying the calm and peace that a person can possibly get watching and learning about bow making. While watching and listening to your videos I reach a point that I don't know I have to reduce or increase the volume because from one hand I have to hear you and from the other hand I have to reduce the volume because music is so laud and makes it impossible waiting for your next sentence witch automatically decreases the volume of music...its bow making paradox !!! LOL
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 5 лет назад
I'm sorry Bahram if the volume of the music clashes with the narration/spoken word. Not intended. This video was made mid 2018 when I swapped from using iMovie to Final Cut Pro editing software. Maybe I got the levels wrong? That said, different devices represent music/voice at differing volumes - my iPhone for example with earphones seems to amplify the music more than when listened via speakers. When setting levels on FCPX I now set music at -6DB when there is no narration and around -19DB when there is. Have you watched my most recent videos? What do you think of the audio levels on those? Mick

@@MickGrewcock : If you can't really change that I understand and yes I think your new videos are much much better . But in general when I'm going on you tube really I want to learn something and at the same time entertain myself ,I don't know if I'm getting too old too soon or what , but sound of scraping and "hand tools" are really soothing, and in lot of cases makes me understand the parameters of work and practically improvs the learning process .Your action has a certain rhythm and that usually dose not mach the music rhythm in background . At the end I must say your work is much appreciated. I am a fan of you and bow making , keep u p the good work. THANK YOU

Hi mick,do you think you can put four fletchings in an arrow?
@mammonihwgb5351
@mammonihwgb5351 6 лет назад
Enis Bobani You definitely can. Waste of a spare feather though since 3 is already enough.
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 6 лет назад
You can and I may do so on my arrow cam but for a regular arrow I doubt there is much point in terms of its flight. Mick

I had someone tell me about experiments made by the French and other nations in the late medieval period to put upwards of seven fletchings on an arrow to try and improve flight. All it does is increase drag. One small benefit of four is when set diagonal to the nock you don’t have to worry as much about how you put the arrow on the string.
@rodparsons521
@rodparsons521 6 лет назад
I don't worry about how I put my arrow on the bow, I just practice how to do it. But if I was responsible for fletching an order of several tens of thousands of livery arrows, I see no practical reason to specify more than three feathers to a shaft. If a threat were so close that there is no time to be picky about cock feather alignment that threat would probably be close enough that ideal cock feather orientation would be less critical in affecting the outcome than speed of reaction and a fluent response.
