The crown corporation is losing a ton of money, and the volume of mail it's delivering is dropping rapidly. It's annual report, released last week, hinted that major changes could be in store. That could include paring back mail delivery to every second or third day, which the corporation confirmed yesterday it was looking into.
What would ending daily mail delivery mean for Canadians? How many would notice, or care? But what about those among us-people and small businesses alike-who rely on timely, every day delivery of letters and packages? What does the future hold for Canada Post in an increasingly paperless world?

Geez, I get upset that the US Postal Service doesn't have Sunday delivery when our Canadian brethren may not get mail delivery at all.

Investing there was no interest in the breakdown of what the crown corporation actually spent the money on to have a loss of that magnitude. Rest assured it is not a decline in mail - maybe report on the facts of an audit of Canada posts spending

They spend $1 Billion on a brand new plant, it's not a real loss. They also bought all new vehicles, and don't forget the millions of dollars in bonuses paid to executives.

delivery twice a week that is good enough or but more boxes we can walk and get our mail that would save millions

They should call the King and ask for money. At some point, did no one in 1971 (when the internet was invented) and thereafter in the 80s and 90s (when email was adopted in the Western world) think about this? At the very least, the principle that delivering mail to Canadians is a core responsibility, not for profit, should have attracted the necessary talent to adapt to the times. Sorry, but not sorry-facts don't care about feelings.\\

It does need to end. It is ridiculous to pay workers to walk daily to deliver nothing.

"We need to adapt, we need to make changes." They should have done that in 1995, just after the Web and email became major players. Instead, here we are 30 years later, and Canada Post is lagging behind every major courier that services Canadians - and those couriers have much higher prices, deliver in the same time frame, yet run a profit. If Canada Post wants to cut their losses, they should consider independent mail carriers outside of CUPW. Canada Post mail carriers average $23 / hour to deliver to community mailboxes. Independent mail carriers would be self-employed (which is always good for the economy), could do it "per piece delivered" (which would cut CP's costs by about 30% - not to mention the lowered costs of bureaucracy involved in collecting and retaining income tax on behalf of their carriers), and would do it in half the time. I'm sure the unions would be up in arms, but Canada Post has no other options if they want to survive as a Crown Corporation.

How about cutting mail delivery to once or twice a week, lay off a lot of staff, and consolidate a lot of the retail spaces they occupy. That will save the tax payer a lot of money.

Tax payers don’t fund Canada Post

Tax payers do not pay into the system. Strictly user fees (I.e. postal products).
