I planted a mix of turnips and radishes in a very small food plot in the summer. The deer haven't eat them much up to this point. Now there is snow in the forecast, will that change things??

God stuff, Dave! I’ve had zero experience with either of them until this year on Ohio public when you helped me identify them. I will say that the deer were “absolutely” hitting them back in November. Way before any snowfall. I’ll be interested to see if the activity increases with colder temps and/or snow. Another 'Absolutely' great video, Dave! I can tell you that in my 1/3 acre suburban food plot, we don't plant radishes or turnips, but there is plenty of clover and I still haven't seen a deer in over a decade.🤷‍♂️

How funny you mention that... I am seriously trying to figure out the logistics of doing that after watching your trail cam videos this year. I think it might be kind of fun to have a suburban trail cam series. But yes, theft is my biggest concern. I need to find places where I could get good, or entertaining, footage yet be safe from prying hands. I was happy to see your public trail cam series because it gave me some ideas for better securing the unit.

Lucky for you I know a guy who did a cellular camera video. You could instantly know when someone is near the camera and if they do steal it, you should have pretty good video of them stealing it 🤣😂🤣 In all seriousness, the suburban trail cam sounds great. You’re boys would love it. 👍

Have not seen hoar frost for years thanks for the memory ! We have spoiled city deer here... they grow small and pretty much bound around wherever they please. I have more neighbors with dogs now so we do not see them quite so much. Merry Christmas !

I plant a mix on food plots, but I have a similar situation hunting on a farm that produces grain, usually wheat, soybean and corn. I have planted radish and they won’t touch it until winter time when all the other crops are gone, red clover is killer, the farmer plants it as a cover crop and the deer will clear snow from it every time. It also recovers every year. Great choice to hunt over that for the late season.

That’s so cool! You’ve got a lot of snow. We don’t really get snow down here in Oxford, Ms. but we saw some reindeer’s poop so we are guessing we have deer in our backyard but we’ve never seen one only in our neighbor’s yard. We are curious too what they eat and how they get warm in the winter. The snow sure is pretty though.

In the winter the deer browse on briars and brush they find above ground. Doing most other times they eat my crops 😂 Thanks for watching! I appreciate it. Happy New Year’s 👍

Turnips are my favorite food plot forage. Tillage radish and winter rye are right there with them. The deer clean up my brassica plots. I heard people say they have seen brassica rotting in the spring. I have never experienced that. Deer in the past actually over browsed my brassica early and stunted their progress. I now plant rye grain next to the brassica plots so they focus on the young rye shoots early and let the brassica get some size and tonnage jumpstart. Love brassica.

Here is Wisconsin, they love Turnips. However, we need a hard frost first or a mild freeze. The turnips get sweet after that and the deer will paw them up all winter until they are gone. Useless for Summer/Autumn plots here though.

Here in KY I've noticed they hit the greens in Oct and then not much past then. Seems to be a few radishes kind of here and there nibbled on but hard to tell what critter it was. However as a soil builder I think all those rotting turnips and radishes should really help.

I hunt in southeast Texas, so not much snow here. I planted radishes last year and they ate them right away. I planted Winfred brassica, tillage radish and appin turnip this year. They've been hitting the radishes the most and some turnip. Haven't touched the Winfred brassica yet. 38° is the coldest it's been so far here. I will try and update in late December.

We definitely live in an area with extreme seasons. We can hit 100° in the summer and below 0°F in the winter! You definitely have to dress for the cold weather!! Thanks for watching! I appreciate it 👍

They are good for the soil. The tiller radishes are also good to combat soil compaction. Both radishes and turnips also leave void areas (holes) in the ground which helps absorb more water and manure/fertilizer when applied. I have planted many acres of brassicas for the dairy cows to graze. The greens are some of the highest protein plants I have ever grazed..,so much so you really have to be careful not to over do it , or at least give them some lower grade fiber to slow the digestive system down. I can make a lot of milk grazing brassicas 👍

Been using turnips in my mix for plots for over 15 years now in Missouri. I see deer consistently eating the tops well before a frost/freeze, one top after another. Bulbs get eaten later in the season January/February. Always a good plot choice here, especially mixed with oats and wheat.

I planted them last year in middle Georgia. They greezed them after a frost but didn't come and devour them until early February, after hunting season. hahaha. But it was the best looking food plot I ever had!

I planted some "Big & Beastie." The expensive one with a big buck on the bag. It grew great, but the deer barely touched it. I tried it for 3 years with no luck, so I gave up on it. They did like the clover I planted. This was in MN.

Up here in Canada we do better leaving soybeans and fall rye seeded late. By Sept they have eaten at least half the bean plants then the rye starts to kick I. This year they are digging down in 1 1/2 ft to find some thin swaths of volunteer wheat. We didn't work the land as we plan on seeding beans next spring anyways. Last fall after field work zero deer. This year same field up to 25 animals feeding. Thanks for the input. I'll seed some of these but on smaller plots close to my yard.

I think it all depends on the area, where deer tend to winter and what other food sources are available. While past turnip food plots did seem to pull in other little deer herds from other areas the activity slowed greatly during the winter because the deer seek out areas with more exposure to sunlight. They seem to come more when corn is not planted within a 1/4, 1/2 mile radius of the food plot. Also are other people creating food plots or salt licks in other areas to pull the deer to them. Deer seem to browse. They don't stay in one spot eating all the time. They will eat the turnip tops and then move into the weeds. Deer also change to eating more woody substances like tree buds in the winter.

You got some great size from those turnips and radishes! I've planted them 4 or 5 years prior to this year and they never got anywhere near that size. Some years there was no rain after planting, a year or two they went in to late. They never got very big and the deer never ate them, so I abandoned planting them this year. Hope you had some late season success!

My plots were small enough I could give them supplemental water. We had an extremely dry summer here and without the extra drink they would’ve grown much. I used my liquid manure spreader to haul the water (also gave them a bit of “nitrogen” in the process)😜 Thanks for watching Chip! I appreciate it 👍

Hey Dave, curious if they hit the plot with the snow. I’m in upstate ny and have always been told once your crop gets that big they are not as desirable to the deer. I plant my plots early September and that give everything enough time to grow to roughly a baseball size and smaller and they really smash it when the harder months start. Great video!

Do half the plot in brassicas and half In Winter wheat, rye, oats, peas mix. 100 lbs per acre seed rate. Planted at same time. Or even up to 4 weeks behind the brassicas. It will get the deer in the plot sooner woth the young rye, wheat, oats, peas. N get them hitting the brassicas sooner also.

Same here Deer didn't hit mine until hard freeze and snow on ground . Then they tore up the tops of the radishes looking like a beaver knawing on wood. I wonder if there's a smaller variety that would be easier for them to eat?

I do eat them on occasion. You definitely want to get them much younger than they are now!! The big ones are fun to look at...not so good to eat 😜

Deer will eat about anything when winter hits. I have watched deer devour a fallen maple trees just to get the sugars from the sap.

Plant a bunch of oats about mid August by just broadcast seeding, deer will eat it daily like a lawn, and a bag is dirt cheap

Thanks. Been thinking about doing turnips and radish for a food plot but how do you terminate them inthe spring? Do you have an isssue when it comes time to disk or till? Those things are huge. Assuming they are an annual as well. Looking for a late winter food plot for West texas. I think I could still plant those here in early november before it gets too late

This will be my 1st year for turnips. I can get 5 pounds for 15 dollars at my local feed store. I do have a clover this is going on my 2nd year for my 🍀 deer love. Now ive herd that deer love turnips and radishes. Deer Will eat them up. Some say it may take a lilttle bit before they do. They tell me that they will tear it up when its colder or when a good snow comes

It is simply not true that food plots are useless when you are surrounded by AG. It is actually more important to pick the proper seed and location on your property based on the surrounding AG and plots are even more important when you have a lot of AG in your area. Your plots are going to be the difference with so much AG in the area.

we are on the tug hill in ny- 200 plus inches snow annually. deer go nuts for the same mix- like nothing I have seen in 30 plus years of planting. It took a year for deer to get acquainted with them, after that the first good frost brings them like mad. where are you located?

This may sound dumb as hell but I have always wondered if you put a couple Mannequins dressed in blaze orange in one of those deer stands and left them there all winter, spring and summer would the deer there get conditioned to them being there, and would the big bucks just come walking in during hunting season without fear since they have been looking at them for so long?🤔

No dumb Mike. I’ve heard and seen guys do exactly that. I’m sure it works. The biggest thing that gets me (people) busted is movement. The deer will tolerate a perfectly still object (trail camera etc) but add any type of movement (moving into position for the shot etc) and your busted. 😁

I live in Arkansas. Planted this is past year. It’s still growing well, but the deer haven’t touched it. I live out in the country on acreage, , decent. Deer population. What gives?

I was alway curious about the correlation between cold weather and deer preference after frost/freezing temperatures? I see dramatic differences after the turnips get frost killed

Yup. Lots of snow. More than all of last winter added into one. Thought of you today...caught my first ever yote with a trap. Wish I had your advice on how to remake the set with a catch circle in the snow 👍

That’s awesome. If the trap can be reused. I would make the set the best I could Find your bed and dirt hole and reset

@@CoffeyOutdoors that’s what I did. The put another right outside the catch ring just in case there’s a shy one. I’m a total rookie when it comes to trapping but I’ll take beginners luck and one less yote around any day 😁

I smashed 2 big pumpkins yesterday in the field and today they were almost gone. I highly recommend that you smash whatever you leave for the wildlife. Most times Deer and other animals mouths are only so big and can't get their teeth into it.

@@HuntingFarmerOfficial If a deer is starving it will chew the bark of the trees and feed on the inside. Mother Nature has the final say so with these creatures. I don't know what else to say Dave.

Deer do not like Turnips nor Radishes. Stick to Chicory & Clover......those are the 2 best food plot items !
