The Showtime series, The First Lady, is an anthology series of several first ladies. In season 1, we find the story of Eleanor Roosevelt (played by Gillian Anderson) and her tenure as first lady - but will we get the full truth of her lesbian relationship with Lorene 'Hick' Hickock (played by Lily Rabe)?
The first season includes Eleanor Roosevelt, played by Gillian Anderson; Betty Ford, played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Michelle Obama played by Viola Davis.

So, the question is if the show is going to finally bring out the full, unabridged history of Eleanor Roosevelt's long time affair with Lorena Hickok, a journalist, author and devoted friend and mentor to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
Other shows, such as Hyde Park on Hudson starring Olivia Williams as Eleanor Roosevelt, have alluded to the relationship while others have just plain ignored it.

In this video, I present some excerpts from the intimate letters between the two women as clear evidence of their love for each other. Whether Showtime's The First Lady will portray the relationship in this light is yet to be seen.
Be sure to leave comments below this video telling us your thoughts on this topic and if you would like to see a video that details the lesbian relationship of Eleanor Roosevelt with Lorena Hickock "Hick."
Thanks for watching and we welcome your comments!

I'm a great admirer of Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. After Franklin Delano Roosevelt got polio she was basically his legs and the Ambassador for his administration. when he practically died in the arms of another woman that was the last of many betrayals she had to suffer over the course of their marriage. For all the things she did for other people I do not begrudge her any moments of happiness she could steal in her life.

I didn't know about the letters but I have heard for a long time that Eleanor Roosevelt loved another woman. It is common & accepted knowledge in the Lesbian community. She was also friends with several Lesbian couples so it was not a foreign experience to her. I too would love to see a movie that focuses on the relationship. There is so much more to them than just lovers. Hick was a great strength to Elenore and they wrote several books together. I like your video, too. Thanks!

I have known about this for years. But that's because I am part of the LGBTQ+ community. As you said, biopics made for the general public and history lessons tend to ignore Eleanor's gay side. I hope the Showtime series will not fall into the usual "brush the gay under the carpet" trap.

Well we know the relationship was revealed in the television series. Hazel Rowley's biography of Franklin and Eleanor includes it and she doesn't fall for the nonsense about the marriage being a sham just because the sex had stopped. They were very supportive of each other and it is difficult to see how either would have achieved as much as they did without the constant motivating supportive drive of each other

He cheated on her for many many years and the only reason she stayed with him was his mother forced them to

They can't bring her out of the closet -- because during Eleanor's life she didn't come out -- it would just be a guess--even though it is an educated guess

Eleanor Roosevelt has always been an idol of mine. I love her strength, her intelligence, her kindness and her unbounded energy. If she had this much happiness from Hick, then that makes me happy. She and her husband were cousins, friends, partners, and business associates. They were seldom lovers, and I felt bad for her because of that. These letters tell another story. The photos show their chemistry. Perhaps they deserve some discretion still, but I am fine with them, either way. xoxo

Actually the Roosevelts were very much into each other the first dozen years of the marriage. Even after FDR had his first affair, they still had a passionate relationship up until the polio crisis.

@@travelseatsyellowlab As President, he wasn't faithful at all. I still love them both. Sometimes we learn too much about historical figures, and this may be the case here. xoxo Eleanor R.

@@karenwolsey2283 for sure. By the time he became president, he was juggling at least two women, Eleanor had a boyfriend by then and allegedly a girlfriend. Thankfully the press showed the Roosevelts a lot of deference where their personal lives were concerned. Some of their friends knew their unconventional situation but didn't talk until long after their deaths. It wasn't uncommon, however. Their cousin, Alice Longworth, had marital arrangements that were even more unorthodox.

I have always admired Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt for her work through out President Roosvelt's terms and after. My thoughts, enough has been reported and shown on Mrs. Roosevelt's love affair, the door should now be closed. Mrs. Roosevelt R.I.P.

History should be told accurately. I think it can be handled tastefully. A lot of people don’t want too many intimate details about the other people’s relationships. They consider it too much information. What they did, how they did it and where they did it might be too much information.

I feel if Eleanor and Hick wanted this out in the open they would’ve done so the fact remains that they are not here to speak for themselves and watching a movie based on their letters in my eyes would be ridiculous

I don't think that they should make a movie as you suggested. Let people keep the image and memories of Eleanor Roosevelt as they are now.

I've seen the excepts on RU-vid. It is ridiculous to cast a woman 155cm tall to play a woman 180cm tall. The physical dynamic doesn't work. Although Gillian Anderson plays Roosevelt with a familiar head bowed stance, it simply makes Anderson's character look birdlike. The physicality between Roosevelt and Hick is all wrong. Any married (or not) woman who has fallen in love with another woman later in life will affirm that this was a genuine love affair. Given that Hick was a butch lesbian known for predatory approaches to women, I can't see how the relationship could not have been consenting and sexual.

I want to know where you're getting your information about Lorena Hickok - "that Hick was a butch lesbian known for predatory approaches to women"? I've never read or heard this before and Eleanor Roosevelt is one of my favorite historical people. I'm also a member of the LGBTQ family (femme lesbian) so I tend to pay attention to all the information on this story. I won't say I'm sure I'm right but I would say I have never heard this and I've been following this story since the 90s. Oh and I'm not refuting that Hick was a butch... it's the part about her being predatory that I have a problem with. Thanks in advance for your help with this and I hope you're having a good week, k

Enjoy your content so much, but your “Florida” comment wasn’t necessary! Only thing Florida is saying is that any sex Ed content is not appropriate for kindergarten - third grade, surely everyone can agree with that! Most people, even people in Florida, have no issue with people living who they want to live. Thanks, again enjoy your content!

I actually enjoyed your comment about Florida. As for "the only thing Florida is saying is that any sex Ed is not appropriate for kindergarten- third grade". Sex Ed is not taught to any young child. Heck, It isn't even taught to older kids. The rest of the US knows what the Bill was meant to target. I hope we all wake up.

Third graders in my country are not very aware of LGBTIQ community generally but if someone in their class has two mums or two dads our teachers are not blocked from explaining that our govt recognises marriages between two people regardless of their gender. Similar if a child that young needs a passport they can get one labelled F, M orX if the gender is intersex or indeterminant. We do have trouble with a so called Christian Lobby that objects but they are not representative of most Christian churches.
