i was a big fan of the mat. I practiced on my indoor mat for 4 days straight and went to a grass range the next day, and I've never hit my irons so bad. Took me 3 holes to get back in the groove. I will not be using mat anymore unfortunately, just not a realistic divot. Love the Channel!

Tai, solid points you make....hitting off a mat can be deceiving for many golf swings....it is different and your experience is sadly not that uncommon...thanks for sharing!

I’m golfing indoors right now in the winter and it’s hurting my game and swing so bad. I’m seriously contemplating stopping until spring.

Personally, I hate mats. Totally different sensation and flights than real turf. Much more painful too on the wrists and elbows, particularly on steeper shots like irons. Woods and hybrids (as sweep shots) are more 'normal' and like turf, but irons are completely different as you're taking divots on those with turf, getting the ball further into the iron's sweetspot. By contrast, I find everything off a mat is low on the club face (a thin) as the club can't get through the ball properly. Hate mats. Did I mention that?!?

Chipping off a mat is running my short game. Putting now so much because my local course isn't as fast a mat but it's ok enough. Hitting off a mat had cause me wrist pain because my swing is fairly steep but really fast

I like the contact on the grass it also feels like real golf when you hit of grass
@Jogaan03

I think the opposite to you, hybrid and fairway woods tend to be more sweeping and suit a mat, irons where you try to strike down is harder. I practice off mats a lot and tend to be a picker on the course, rarely get a divot.

I'm with you John. I have a skytrak and turf in my garage. I pretty well pure everything on the course and rarely take divitos with any of my clubs.. All my friends always ask how i hit the ball so clean.. i think its do to hitting off mat everyday.

I took a sleeping bag, folded it in half and put it under the mat. When you stand on it, it feels more like real turf and provides some cushion for your irons. You have to incorporate the towel drill though so you know your making correct contact.

Hate using mats, it flattens my swing plane too much and I couldn't for the life of me figure it out for months, I went out and hit off the grass and tried getting a little steeper and all of a sudden my swing is perfect and I shoot my lowest round ever, Ill never use mats again

Ernie Els once mentioned using a tee with every shot on practice range. Tee it up every time! 1.Im sure the essence of that is to condition solid contact and striking the BALL solid. 2. You tee it up 18 times during a round irrespective of your skill level or score.(I see very few players on range tee up iron shots. POINT OF INTEREST!.......Do you realize the equilibrium level....ball on fairway "deck"......and your shoe sole thickness......ratio comparative to how deep your weight compress down were you stand on "deck" Compared to a stance on concrete slab which would result in bottom of ball(on concrete) and bottom of shoe soles.......Should be 100% same "height".........This differs significantly on the fairway. Given the fact that a golfer weighing 120kg will compress deeper than a 70kg golfer.

I was practicing on some not well maintained and non-flat grass range for weeks, can making good contact 6/10 times. Then one day decided to try the mat, easily hitting every shot perfectly. I think mat lacks a bit of variables and fun when practicing as every single shot is similar.

I’m having difficulty hitting off of the mat at my trackman simulator. I’m used to taking steep and fat divots. My 8 iron outside carrys 150 yards where in the trackman it’s carrying only 110 yards. I carry my 5 iron 180 outside inside it’s going 140. Played 100 rounds this summer hit fine outdoors (15 handicap)but cannot seem to hit the ball indoors (resembling ball striking of a 30 handicap). What are your thoughts? Do you have any suggestions as to what I could do to take less of a divot?

I've hit off Jay's mats since 05, both the older ones and the newer ones. I get asked a lot as an instructor about my opinion on the subject. Here is my personal opinion. Correct swings from a power application stand point with the correct ball position (aka Jack Nicklaus) work equally well off both turf and mats. Injuries are at the bottom of the scale with that swing. Injuries off mats are usually due to an improper power application and a steep path into the ball (and a deep divot past the ball on turf). The human body, most specifically wrists and elbows, can not withstand the repercussions of that over time regardless of what the ball is sitting on. The injury normally will just happen sooner off mats. I do agree that Jay's are the best!

My swing become more of a picker rather than taking a small divot on the grass. So it screws up ur swing especially when we feel it’s going to hurt, it’s sub conscious ... no matter what I tell my self before the swing.

Do those rubber tees affect the swing/ball flight or even the equipment (wrong stresses on the club)?

I have been going to the range 2/3 times a week. I destroy the whole bucket, lots of control, A+ efforts. With my crew it’s hard to get them actually to the course. Recently did tho and off grass obviously lower lying balls. I was massively struggling. 😮
@kj475
@kj475 2 года назад
I can flush my irons off a mat, but struggle off of grass. I've determined that I hit the mat slightly before the ball and this tends to straighten my club face. When I take the same swing to the grass, the grass will tend to grab and turn the club face before striking the ball. My 6 iron is average 160 and straight off the mat and average 130 and off target off of grass.

I'm a beginner. about 2 months since my first time to hit the driving range. I'm used to hitting of mats, and I was reaching 120-150 yards on a 7 iron. but when I tried a driving range where you have to hit of the grass, I was not hitting it at all. How can I improve my game? is it advisable for me to practice on the mat or on the grass?

The mat grabs the irons a lot more than grass. I hit down on the ball. On grass, I always take a divot. That doesn't happen on the mat. If you constantly hit off mat, you're going to develop wrist pains.

@USGOLFTVshow
@USGOLFTVshow Год назад
Good question, mats are easier to hit off in general because the ball sits up nice and tall allowing for clean contact between the ball and the clubface, this equals more spin.

I have a home simulator and hit a lot of balls during the off season. I use a Real Feel golf mat. I developed carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands that required surgery to correct. My recommendation is to use a product called a Fairway Pro fairwaypro.com/. This product absorbs the shock and is also portable so you can take it to the range if you like.

Golf mats exaggerate or rob you of distance vs real golf course? Or is it negligible?
@USGOLFTVshow
@USGOLFTVshow 4 года назад
John H. Seiler good question, we do not see a big difference but would say if anything hitting off mats gives you a little more distance...good question
@blackedmirror5073
@blackedmirror5073 4 года назад
Mats = less friction less distance but they are about the same except in one case where you are hitting behind the ball and the club bounces off the mat and the ball flies but if that same strike was on grass it would be a total flub.
@simbabuilds9338
@simbabuilds9338 3 года назад
Hitting off mats cause you to be shallower on contact for the sake of your joints and not hurting yourself which increases effective loft on your wedges specifically which will cause higher trajectory and less distance - less effect on long and irons and woods because swings are already shallower. If you like to hit up on long irons and woods you won’t be able to do that on mat so you’ll get less carry on a mat with those clubs

@@USGOLFTVshow ... Yeah, TXG did a side by side test with grass vs mats few yrs ago... a quality ball strike “ball then turf” showed almost identical numbers. You couldn’t tell just looking at the numbers if the tester hit off the mat or off the grass. I prefer mats (I have 3 brands) over grass in my area.
