Will I Ever Use A Plank Again??? 

This was one of thee most beneficial videos EVER in the plant community!!! I tried moss poles once early on in my plant parent journey and immediately knew as an underwaterer that it just wasn't for me. I went wood plank on everything and was kind of at a loss on what I should do once i have mature leaves. This video was helpful beyond words!!!! I now know that plants I really want to mature and propagate, that they need a moss pole. Thank you SOOOOO much for showing your journey and how you adjusted to moving to moss propagation!! Priceless INFO!!!!

I would recommend using cling wrap and sphagnum moss to air layer. You can monitor the progress of the roots through the clear plastic & it's very easy to ensure it stays moist. It might take a couple of months also, but you can keep it on until you see a good root system. (btw commented at around 4 mins in)

We hit Hawaii every year, I got into plants this last year because of what I see here in Hawaii, (we’re here now just got married and on our honeymoon) so we visited the botanical gardens this time, OMGOSH, everything I own at home, but a hundred times bigger, more vibrant, and everything flowering I didn’t know DID flower! 🌺 I got enough photos to cover 5 homes’ walls! And of course legally bringing home what cuttings/seeds I can!! I’m in heaven ❤ never noticed the pothos before this year thought it was something else, as big as a car tire, fenestrated, STUNNING, WAY up on the palms etc

I love how clever and creative you are! And adventurous! Adding a moss pole to a stake? Love it! I have stuck sticks into moss poles as extensions- but those are not nearly as effective as what you’ve created. You have just inspired me to start a marble pothos and a cebu blue on moss poles. That’ll be my next project for the winter. And I’m starting a philodendron pink princess, too. Just chopped her up today. I always learn something from you! Thank you. i recommend the stalk of ceiling floodlights which you can buy used quite cheap. their sections are screwed with each other and you can just prolong them adding another section.

Jeff have you experimented with rooting in distilled water vs filtered tap to see if there is a difference? I root in distilled water and maybe it’s just luck but my cuttings root really fast. Your high tech drawings are the best. 😂

Possibly a once in a million result but I was able to cut my plank soil pothos, placed the plank and attached roots into a pon semi hydro and it hasn't missed a beat and still sizing up😊 Your videos are both information and inspirational... Tyvm and Keep 'em coming!

I too am an underwater and won't tolerate high maintenance plants. When I lived in FL I saw so many of these plants thrive with barely any care so I know it is possible to get them big without babying I have had little success with moss poles! Particularly my Monstera Pinnapartina - despite adequate light it refuses to attach to the moss pole so I am going to try a plank. Thank you for all of this information. The best method likely greatly depends on the specific plant type.

New subscriber here! I’m a pretty descent gardener outdoors but am somewhat baffled with houseplants. I can’t have any in my home due to having 9 cats. We have many many house plants where I work and don’t want to kill anymore!

think a plank is ok , but its lacking texture like having a bark , which i notice it holds moisture better and some bark can trap dirt in it , just look at the rain forest tree

Would it matter that the moss was only on the “front” of the stem? If you had loosened the vine from the planks and wedged moss in BEHIND might the air layering have been successful?

Hi Jeff! Do you have any Syngoniums on moss poles or planks? I have some reclaimed barn wood I want to use as planks, but I also have 3 of those plastic things for moss poles. When I was first married, I had a VERY hot west facing window in my NJ apartment. I bought it with a beautiful bark covered wood plank already in it. That plant was GORGEOUS!!! It loved being about 10 feet from those said windows. We then bought a house with really lousy placed windows for house plants and subsequently everything I had died including my Syngonium. It was just your everyday White Butterfly, but it was gorgeous. There was another in the window of my vets office living it's best life! Had to be at least 3 feet around! It belonged to one of the workers and she has since taken it home. But let me know what you think about Syngoniums growing on poles or planks. Thank you!!

Would you consider wrapping the plant around the moss pole or plank as it grows? It would hopefully cover the whole pole to make it look fuller.

I hope you can buy/use an angled soil scooper for more efficiency in gathering soil mix. My mom used a bamboo pole before instead of a plank, and the lower portion became mushy or rotted after some months due to having a bigger pot than required and overeatering as well as low light.

Have you watched Sydney Plant Guy chop and extend videos? I think he does what you are suggesting with fantastic results.

I'm just curious as to why you didn't keep that pot of pothos roots and a section of stem. Wouldn't that have grown?

Instead of using plant Velcro… could you use the “cage” of the moss pole (that attaches in front) and place the cutting behind as you build the pole?

plant support is really something i m struggling with atm. i have 1 mosspole in use currently with my adansonii and it grows into it beautifully, leaves becoming huge aswell. there is a big BUT however. 1. i need around 6-10 more mosspoles now or pretty soon and even 1 mosspole is allready a mess. maintenance is a pain, i get gnats again, had to fight some mold on it too and its so expensive and annoying to do. i feel like im kind of enslaved to the mosspole. if i need one, i have to order stuff online for alot of money, while i can go to homedepot whenever i want and buy a cheap huge plank all the time. in some regards the downsides of the mosspole also conflicts with my mind a little. i switched everything to leca this year and my plants love it. i did that also to streamline things and make things more simple and to get rid of gnats... now with the pole, gnats are back and its more complicated than ever

I wouldn't throw bottom pothos or anything in the compose. There are many people that would love to prop from that. I've given so many of my unwanted clippings to others to spread the love. You know the saying "someone else's trash is other's treasure". Pleasure share your love. Love your experiment, by the way. I'm new to polesand I really appreciate this

pine is one of the best woods to use for this so you are wrong there, pine is very natrually rot resistant and is used in outdoor applications for that reason

I'm not much a fan of the wooden planks bc I tried 3 of my philodendron on them and when friends visited us they ask us why so many wood around our plants n it was only three..so I took them apart after and returned to my beautiful moss pole which no one complained about after..and to be honest they look more planty with the moss pole..lol..but if it works for you that's great my Canadian friend.

Now I'm wondering if I should try my Scindapsus pictus on a plank. Has anyone here ever tried that?

When you air layer, are you cutting into the stem at all? I have seen the process done where you remove the outer-most layer of flesh before applying the rooting media, but I feel like that was more for tree cuttings. Have you used any rooting hormone on the layering sites at all? Good video as usual. Thanks for sharing.

Is the solution just to chop and then prop the top cut in water? Why doesn't that solve the problem? Is it too slow?

that good nz moss is so expensive i have been mixing it with chunky coconut husk in my diy poles and so far great results.

My grandmother she 95 told me that her mom in Puerto Rico used to burn the tip were the plank going to the soil and it works is to burn the tip of the plant that going to the soil so the plank wont root and will work as charcoal i'm going to be doing a tiktok explaining ❤❤❤❤

Jeff, the wood notching is a genius idea! How would you hold the moss in the middle though? Would you just wrap it with plastic wrap, or make a cup holding device? TIA👍🏽

when you place the plants in the shower, are you using filtered or tap water? im always so careful to use filtered, but would love to shower them. your videos are so helpful, thank you!

I was wondering about your electric bill. With all those grow light how does that effect your electric bill?

Do you have issues with fungus gnats with your moss poles?
