"Will I?", a song which takes place during a Life Support meeting and expresses the pain and fear of living a life with AIDS, was inspired by a real event. Larson attended a meeting of Friends in Deed, an organization that helps people deal with illness and grief, much like Life Support. After that first time, Larson attended the meetings regularly. During one meeting, a man stood up and said that he was not afraid of dying. He did say, however, that there was one thing of which he was afraid: Would he lose his dignity? From this question stemmed the first line in the single stanza of this song. The people present at the Life Support meeting in the show, such as Gordon, Ali, and Pam carry the names of Larson's friends who died of AIDS. In the Broadway show, the names of the characters in that particular scene (they introduce themselves) are changed nightly to honor the friends of the cast members who are living with or have died from AIDS

Yeah... I mean, if it was a man-made disease, wouldn't a cure be made by its side to prevent the deaths of many? Wouldn't scientists have understood the virus before it was first diagnosed? Would there have been more caution? Or by "man-made", do you mean that it was somehow created foolishly and we didn't have the tools to cope with it? Different interpretations!
@junitreeeee

there isnt a patent wtf? Even the supposed patent for a cure "AIDS Cure Patent" (US Patent #5676977) was proven not to be a cure for aids but a purely speculative idea that has never been shown to work

All I need to hear is the first line of this song and I'm crying, every single time. I used to volunteer at a Catholic AIDS ministry in the 1990s and one of my main duties was to attend the funerals of gay men who had died. Their families had largely disowned them for being gay, and sometimes it was only me and 2 others from the ministry in the pews to mourn these human beings. It literally broke my heart. AIDS was genocide in virus form, and so, so many good people died, all of us were scared, and the US government, along with the majority of major healthcare systems, did not give a rat's ass. AT ALL. But....."will someone care" about them? Yes. Me. Always.

I do believe homosexuality is a sin but homosexuals are still human beings made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27) and are equal with everyone (Galatians 3:28). There’s no changing that. Homosexuals were created to enjoy a relationship with God just like the rest of us and the gates of Heaven are open for them if they accept God’s offer of forgiveness for sins.

@@Nameless-pt6oj I appreciate your comment but homosexuality is not a sin. God loves everyone of who they are. I'm not Catholic but I believe that whoever wrote the Bible is not Her words. God's book was abused by people who didn't liked what she wrote, and they twisted up Her words and use them to threaten gays and unmarried parents with Hell to normalize society because it was either gays getting punished or them bigots getting punished. You remember that

@blithelyme
@blithelyme 6 лет назад
Obviously I have no idea what the true intention of Mark singing was, but one of my friends once told me she interpreted it as Mark being afraid of being alone. It's definitely a concern of his, which you can see later on in Halloween and Goodbye Love. She believed that his singing of "will I lose my dignity, will someone care, etc" was about him wondering if anyone was going to be there for him as he got older, because most of his friends were sick and/or dying.

In this movie, this song is about AIDS support... but listening to this is the feeling I get every time I walk into a group therapy session. It's all about "this is why I'm afraid" and then... everyone's together in it. Everyone expresses the same or similar griefs or fears. Depression may not be as actively life-threatening as AIDS, but I feel like this song touches every support group out there.

Depression can be just as deadly, if not more so, than AIDS, just in a different way. without treatment, both can be deadly, but depression is not viewed the same way in society. If someone is depressed, they are seen as weak, like they are in complete control of their disease and still just let it happen. I have been fighting it for most of my life and still hit lows pretty frequently. Without my friends and girlfriend, I wouldn't still be here. My current gf has been the more understanding of any of my previous ones and we support each other through our rough times. All of my exes blamed me for my own thoughts and made me feel worse for them. We all need support for mental AND physical illnesses.
@wrengilson2025
@wrengilson2025 8 лет назад
+Jacen Lazar Support is a huge deal for any disease. One of my exes told me "all you need is a good friend to talk to" and discouraged the idea of going to a therapist. It's a rough road and I think we know better than any of the doctors that it doesn't get cured; you learn to live. So keep living. You've got this. :)
@Regitze1234
@Regitze1234 8 лет назад
+Jacen Lazar A little fact about AIDS: When Jonathan Larson wrote RENT, AIDS was seen as a shameful thing to have, that only gay people and drug addicts could get. If you had it, you were seen as weak and wrong. It was a death sentence, there was no cure back then. Society looked down at you. You were allowed to deny victims any kinds of jobs, to deny them a home. The only support many of these people had, was the support groups. And Jonathan wrote these characters, based on people he knew, who died from AIDS. This hit you mentally as well as physically, and many would do suicide, like Rogers girlfriend April did. Support groups were and are a big help, and have helped many, many people throughout the years. I think this song means a lot to him, and to many people who's had the honor of hearing it

4 lines, so true. The first thing you lose is your dignity and begin feeling like you aren't even a whole person. Then you feel no one cares. There is no such thing as pity or sympathy from others on what you're going through. Some nights you wonder if you will even make it through the night, but when you do you realize you're situation still hasn't changed and you're stuck in this nightmare forever.

It's a song sung in a round. And it's perhaps the most powerful round in the entire show, because it asks one question, that everyone struggles with- Will I? I can relate, not because of a disease like AIDS, but because I suffer from mental illness, as well as Lupus, and that question has bounced around in my head for years, because it truly describes how I feel at times. And that's both a scary and beautiful thing.

When the movie version came out, it took a lot of flack over the cast being too old but when you take the movie on its own terms, it's outstanding. The OG cast, however old they were, just nailed their characters all over again and their vocals were still spot on. We're lucky to have Blu-ray versions of the movie and the live closing night performance on Broadway starring Will Chase, Rene Elsise Goldsberry and a stellar case.

I will say that for about a decade I read the characters as being 30-40 because of the age of the actors and had a very "these people need to grow up" approach to them. I saw this movie 3 times in theaters when it first came out. I didn't appreciate just how intense the words were until I deployed to Iraq in 2009. When I came home and tried to begin the process to reintegrate back into society, I noticed the nightmares and mood swings more often and in increasingly starker terms. I have lived with PTSD, nightmares and night terrors, recurrent severe depression, and survivors guilt since I came home. This song resonates for me because I desperately want to wake up from the nightmare that is my life. I want to leave everything of the last 12 years in that nightmare and wake up to a world that makes more sense, that isn't as cruel, and that isn't as scared as we are now. I know part of me will always be in that desert, but I can't help to wonder if it's part of my soul.

This is a beautiful song, and I’m sorry to hear about everything you’ve gone through. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Mark 11:28. If you are open, or haven’t already, please give Jesus a try. Somethings things are just too much for us to handle on our own, and he’s more than willing to help. I’m praying that your situation gets better ❤️

This song is so powerful and is my go-to cry song when I think about my recently-departed father who passed away on February 9, 2017 after a long hard battle with colon cancer. There is no waking from any nightmare disease induces, there's only acceptance of its existence. RIP DAD. I miss you more than there are words are available to describe it.

I love how Roger ends with 'Will someone care' instead of 'will I wake tomorrow from this nightmare?', almost as if he's just worried about whether or not someone would care for him all through this. But after he sings that, his friends hold him closer, reassuring him that he's not alone and is very much loved in that moment.

I cry everytime i listen to this song. It really hits home and resonates. I struggle with PTSD, Depression and bad Anxiety. And everyday is a struggle. And Im always wondering if anyone cares, or if I took my own life would people care. Idk why but seeing everyone there to support each other in this scene always makes me happy and sad and jealous. not having anyone in my own life to support me but knowing there are people who know what I am going through. Love this movie. Wish I couldve seen the play. Jonathan Larson is the GOAT

This scene/song is (for me) the emotional nightmare of this story. What if you knew you were going to die? What if you knew that it was going to be ugly? How do you deal with that? Yes, On one hand this is about hope, but on the other I think it's about helplessness grown in to terror.

Jonathan Larson was so ahead of his time. He wrote a musical that explains the truth of what people like the characters go through everyday and brought awareness to this part of the world and Rent is probably the most important show on Broadway. If he hadn't died young, he would have written more plays. We need Jonathan Larson to bring awareness to the America we lost to illness, violence, homelessness, broken trust, and a fucked up government. Will I loose my dignity? Will someone care? Will I wake tomorrow? From this nightmare? Will we wake tomorrow from this nightmare? 😞💔🇺🇲🔥⚰️💉🌎

In the history of my life, I have never encountered anything better than this song. No matter how many times I hear it, tears well up in my eyes and I can't help but overlap my own painful days with their fate. How hard and painful it is to live with such anxiety that there may be no tomorrow, that you may not be alive tomorrow. It was as if she was singing about it. I had a healthy body, but I listened to this song while enduring a mother who did not love me and a violent family. If this was a nightmare, I wanted to wake up. If I died, who would care for me? I wanted my mother to love me. I wanted my mother to care about me, not anyone else in the world. I wanted her to care about me, not beat me, not be angry with me for being born. The lyrics are short and the melody is monotonous, but this song that we suffered together saved my life and I am now living my life. Thank you.

I'm not sure of the details but from what they said I gathered that Rent stopped running on Broadway (or somewhere anyway!!) in order to make room for HSM... So even though I agree all the hate was kind of unfair, it's also understandable people would be upset about it!! (Even though these things unfortunately do happen in live theatre a lot due to limited venues and stuff and there's really no point targeting specific shows or hating because of it)

I love this song so much. The impact this song has had on me. I jadnt even heard of this until i was dating my now wife. Growing up i suffered heavily from axiety and depression. My whole life I kept my feelings and emotions bottled up "like a man" but when we watched this and this song played putting perfectly into words my internal struggle and monologue. Any time I'm supposed to open up "will i lose my dignity? Will somone care?" I broke down into the hardest sobbing cry i had ever done. I wasnt prepared to do that in front of my new girlfriend but her response of care and kindness made me know i had to marry her. I love this so much.
