We return the #WillItAntenna series in the Cerritos Sculpture Garden on the hunt for something BIG and made of metal. I brought the ICOM IC-705 QRP radio and AH-705 QRP tuner on this adventure.
A BIG shout-out to Ham Solo for reminding me to get off my duff and make this happen! • Will It Antenna!!! Hap...

Thanks Josh. Those metal sculptures can really sing. When I did my first set of those I was surprised at the capability. A pair of birds, a set of locomotive engine bells, and the giant metal Art fountain were my first of those. Enjoy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--ZHaitFIYmI.html Ham-Solo K0FYR

Hi Josh, I was the first time QSO from Calgary. I was watching this video tonight and recognized the voice as mine. I remember that day clearly. Its too bad we couldn't do a QSO. Chris - VE6TNO (operating that day out of the Calgary Amateur Radio Association's club station - VE6AO). 73 from Calgary!

Fun experiment! Next time, maybe bring an analyzer and probe around different locations to see if some have a better impedance match than others. Feeding further from the grounded portions will likely work better too.

This is one of my favorite things to do in ham radio. I like use a 9:1 UnUn in my setup. My favorites have been tuning up a small bridge, high voltage power tower near a hydroelectric dam, barbwire fences, ladders, rain gutters, the whole body of my car, bicycle & attached trailer.

I appreciate this stuff. I have had success on several strange objects. Recently at a hamfest south of Columbus Ohio we worked several countries on ft8 with a fourty meter hamstick sitting on a plastic table with 705 on five watts.

This is so cool. Listening from Western Kentucky. Been a while since I even been around a ham operator. Mostly listening now though scanner but still interesting. Really don't think a lot about it till a disaster event and all communications has fails. It's a great hobby and it serve a useful purpose. Thanks.

If it's conductive, it'll antenna. The question is, how well will it do so? Heck, you can use your head as an antenna to extend your keyfob range.

Josh thanks for doing this video!!! It reinforced an antenna idea I came up with based off of an 66ft End Fed. So a little background I used to have a G5RV up & it broke in short. I knew I had some wire lying around, I took about 66ft of 14 gauge wire attached it to the center of an 8ft piece of RG58, then off the shield 2 pieces of 8ft wire to use as ground radials, which definitely could be longer. Anyway my point being is how many people told me that this wouldn't work for a number of various reasons. Mainly because "I had to have some type of balun or un-un", my thinking no I didn't need that because I was using my MFJ-939 Intellituner in place of a balun or un-un. And the whole time people were telling me how much it wouldn't work I was making contacts off of it. Guess I should have been watching more of your will it antenna series! 73 N3PKJ

The weird est thing i've ever "antenna'd" is a lifeguard tower... I clipped to the roof and the counterpoise was the copper lightning strap i was replacing at the time :D

Loved this series. Being a Canadian myself, I was rooting for you to make that Calgary contact. Unfortunately your problems appeared infinite in that endeavour! (yes, there is an extra U in that lat word). Lastly, the brew being consumed while enjoying this was a Hoyne brewed Pilsner (brewed in Victoria BC) - I am not associated/affiliated or receive any remuneration for saying that. Cheers.

This is a case when it matters where you grip it i.e. feed it. I would also try to wrap 2 turns of isolated wire around it to make a transformer either way what a blast. I have always wanted to stick up a 20m vertical in front of a large softball backstop to use as a corner reflector

I bet the main problem is the sculpture is really well-grounded. Perhaps attaching to it as far from the ground as possible would give better results. As it is, I wonder how much the sculpture is radiating vs the non-shielded wire you have going to the sculpture...
@HamRadioCrashCourse
@HamRadioCrashCourse Год назад
It’s possible.

@qrplife

“Next time” try feeding it farther away from where sculpture mounts to the ground. Perhaps forcing the current to travel will give some small opportunity for some to radiate.
@DonzLockz
@DonzLockz Год назад
It did ok since it was also grounded. You should have just unbolted it from the ground.😆

How well does a flagpole work? Paint might make a contact hard, the lashing point screws might help if not coated.
@MaryBrownForFreedom

Feed it with a gamma match... same way you would feed a tower as a vertical. See the ARRL antenna handbook...
@OnAirVoice

Would that work better if you attached to it at the top or middle instead of the base?

That sculpture looks as though it would make a better counterpoise than an antenna.

How to know that its not the counterpoise thats the radiating element, in cases like this?
