I saw the same max temperature of 285 degrees F while climbing steep single track in 93 degree F weather. The motor heats up internally quickly if you overload the motor torque, even on PAS 3. Conversely, if you run at full power on the road, even with smaller hills, no problem with overheating. I've ridden 8.5 miles at max power, and temps are fine. I've also seen no issues after maxing temp out on motor, but could eventually cause issues. I'll try to limit power when I get the max temp in the future.
@@nswenson520I've read that excess heat can demagnetize the powerful motor magnets and damage the insulation on the copper windings. On my Five Star if I run full throttle on flat roads it does start to overheat, but... I weigh 265lbs. I enjoy pedaling the bike though. Pedaling on PAS 5 is a lot of fun, the bike takes off like a rocket.
Got my E-Cells 5 Star just a few days ago. Assembly was easier than expected thanks their video. Needed to make some adjustments to the brakes but then was ready to go. Mine even came with a free front basket that I didn't ask for! Your videos were the first to point me to this bike so of course I had to use Max100 to get my discount. It's definitely lived up to expectations!
Nice informative video, thanks for sharing. I've had my Five Star now for less than a week. I've already put over a 100 miles on it. I love it. How do you get your display to show motor temperature?
So if the thermal camera only showing in the 50's is the screen giving false info on temps? Interesting, maybe its not actually in danger whatsoever. 100c being max per hentech. I hit 200f every ride, and have seen 250f. Per the display no other readings taken.
Great vid. What seat are you using? I have tried 3 on my new 5 star and none are doing the trick yet. I am used to a more aggressive ride position where I have weight on my arms on a fixed tail MTB but this sitting straight up and down puts all the weight on the rear. Like sitting on a bar stool. Do you feel that cloud 9 cruiser in your link is the most comfortable?
I have the cloud 9 seat suspension cruiser seat I just put on my five star I also ordered some cane creek 31.8 to 27.2 shims so I could put on a zoom suspension seat post maybe overkill but if your hauling ass and hit a pot hole I like knowing I have 3 suspensions between me and where all my weight is to dampen and smooth out the ride.
I did a heat ride I live near Death Valley so it was about 30 degrees warmer. The bike didn't seem to care but my camera equipment kept overheating every 15 minutes and by the end of a 40 mile ride I was looking for a place to throw up. At 100 -110 the wind on your bike helps cool you but somewhere around 115 degrees the wind is no longer your friend. It's like when you open a hot oven except your whole body the whole time. Seriously thought I was going to burn the hair of my arms and legs.
@@maximumchargeEV Where I am it's been in the triple digits for two weeks and will be till Sept. I moved here to get away from the snow, I don't think it will find me here.
I seen on the display of your bike that it has motor temperature but does it also have outside temperature is that updated for the newer version of the bike
@@maximumchargeEV Dave is selling them that cheap. It really changed the rear from just a air pivot to much more of a "shock" feel. Smoother. Idk hard to explain but worth the $100. $179 no so much 😂😂😂
@@maximumchargeEV mine came with the 4 pistons brakes so that's amazing. He's selling the dual star kit. Air forks, rear rack, rear battery, big headlight for $599. Definitely will be upgrading to that when available. I'm glad I have the bike now, and like to wrench so win win for me.
it's actually easy for a bike to maintain speed, doesn't use that much power, and the airflow helps cool things down a lot. Slow hill climbs are the true temperature stress test.
I just found out from the owner of Ecells that Hentach (Five Star motor manufacturer) says not to exceed 230°F motor temp. It bet you're exceeding that temp.
Same, the longer the ride it continues to build temps as well(even in pas1). I've stopped at 220 and it screams up to 265 sitting. Heat soak? That being said i haven't noticed any degration in performance yet. Its a hot rod. Part of me wants to just ignore it and ride. Unsure of the longevity or cost of new motor.
WOW Thank you for the hill & some real trail times. lol Im not to stable on ebikes & trails either, Im learning :) on motorbikes Ive done that for years & familiar with those, But an Ebike is very different. Thank you for showing it going up those. ok I was sold on the 5 star, but know "my" limitations and going with the step star when its released - really looking forward to seeing that [If I saw one Id likely buy it on the spot] lol I have a couple lill 750 watt ebikes for the places that require that Buut THere are miles of logging roads & trails here that are unused when hunting season ends. I want a step thru to go up those. any where a log truck can go I wanna ride an ebike there too. my motor bikes & ATV have been there, but I wanna ebike it. I will need to learn it, but to see the star go there lets me know I can too [with practice.] thank you for running those "real" trails in the woods :)
Is there some kind of a contract that keeps RU-vidrs from comparing the five star and wired freedom and head? Did either wired or ecells stipulate in the contract that you guys couldn't compare both of the bikes
I don't own a Wired Freedom, only a heavily modded 1st gen wired Cruiser. It would be silly to compare them. Plus wired has a new model out. I'm curious to see how that bike handles motor heat considering it's getting more current than this one and has a smaller controller so less surface area for heat dissipation
@johns5504 Yeah I was wondering what kind of damage is being done to the motor at those temps. Hopefully none, but there's a chance it could affect the motors overall performance.
@@heavyhitter8972 and at 141 Celsius thats over 285. I know a lot depends on the wire coatings, but there's a limit as the windings themselves trap the heat from getting out to where it can be cooled.
@@maximumchargeEV I have the 19" frame with 26" tires, it's a big tall bike. I should have gone with the 17" and 24" tires for a lower center of gravity.
Great job showing how much stress you can put on the bike before it overheats & shuts down. I am also glad you stated that about the 24” tires as it confirms I made the right choice. I opted for the 5 Star Step thru with the 24” tires. I have ridden the 26” & 20” fat tires & found I was much more in control on the 20”, so I felt the 25” was a perfect compromise. Hopefully, we will see some of the 24” reviewed when they start shipping them next month. I don’t expect mine until late July early August.
Hey Alex, love your informative videos, I'm a fellow New Englander up near Keene, NH. I have a Wired cruiser a Aug 2023. What do you think of the updated Wired in comparison with the updated 5 Star ?
@glenndavis7762 thanks! That would be an interesting comparison. I'm curious how the motor does with the extra power being sent to it, especially since this one is already getting pretty hot with 40amps.
