Awesome video of a rare car. Came from Montana and worked in Bozeman after college. Was drag racing then. One of my buddies and his mom had a bunch of 1 car garages around town in alleys rented out. An elderly lady wasn't able to pay rent and offered to give them the car for 10 years storage (they were plenty lenient with her) and they accepted. Her son died in Vietnam in '68 and his car stayed undriven since then. Just happened to be a '66 Caprice outfitted just like yours excepting air conditioning driven only 2 years. 427 4 speed, we checked the numbers, then found the build sheet. 425 hp. It ran but the car was valuable enough to have it professionally refresh. Black paint only needed buffing, he has it to this day, what a beast! I'll be watching for your progress on this car, good luck!

This car was a head turner in its day. If you lived in most towns and small cities in the USA or Canada, everyone would know you about your 427 Caprice with a 4 speed. It made you a cool dude. You were what you drove. Comfort, power, style and coolness. (The "coolness" option came standard with the 427 4 speed).

Man this thing brings back memories! I was 15 in the early 80's and we had a 69 Impala sitting between the house and barn amd my mother said i could have it if i got it running! Of course she didnt think i had a clue of how to fix a car at 15! Two days later i had her fired up and mamma said wait a minute i didnt think you could fix that, you dont have a license! I smiled got in and drove down the country roads where we lived! I miss those days and that car! A differnt time that seemed like a different world!

My grandma traded her BB 4 spd Caprice in on a 70' Nova with a SB 4 spd, both bench seat cars. Then she broke her hip and traded the Nova in on a '82 Buick Century with a slushbox behind a 3.8 bent six, she hated that car and so did I. Tower hose clamps, thats a term I haven’t heard on a long time.. back in the 80’s-90’s in the group I hung out with, we simply called Impalas/Caprices “big car”. Like “I know where a big car is sitting”. Usually behind some old house. And the term basically meant “engine donor” 😁. Those hideaway headlights and blue bow tie emblem bring back memories. The “rosewood” trim and push button radio are special. It looks like you have found a good one to save. Good luck on your project!

@dukeallen432

Not true. I’ve owned many old cars and still do over 100k. Aldo you can repair all the components, alternator starter wiper motor switches and on and on.
@stephenflowers8516
@stephenflowers8516 Год назад
@@dukeallen432 That's funny because I was around back then buying used cars all the time. And all car ( Unless maintained very well) were all basket cases at 100,000 - 120,000 max. At that point they most likely had a timing chain and gears replaced along with a valve job. They just did not last like today's engines.
@grapeseed427
@grapeseed427 Год назад
@@stephenflowers8516a few things to consider, on older cars like this a timing chain and valve guide job is about a 8-10hr job with hand tools, electric or pneumatic tools 4-6hrs if no bolts break. Most newer cars rerequire level 2 technician skills to change a headlight, and the taillights are all on printed circuit boards that cost around $130 for the knockoff brand and sometimes over $500 for the proper part and I'm not talking about expensive luxury cars, I'm talking Maxima, etc... Read a story and watched a few videos about car companies tracking how many times their buyers had sex in their cars using technology installed from the factory. I've been a auto technician for 20yrs so it didn't surprise me that the technology could do this, I was just shocked that they actually used it this way and snuck the consent into the paperwork.

Pull the valve covers and make sure nothing is janky there. Bent/broken. Drain the oil and fill with half or the oil you drained and half ATF. Run it a bit off and on for a few days. Then drain it and change filter for sure. This might loosen up any lifter issues and clean some sludge out. You should probably drop the pan also after this and make sure the oil pickup is clean. Odometers back in the day only had 5.1 digits because the internal tolerances in the engine meant a typical lifetime less than 100,000 miles. Of course there were exceptions for the people who actually maintained their vehicles regularly, but one look at the wear on the brake pedal would tell you if it was actually over 100K miles. Man it sounds great . It would be a great car for someone that wants a 69 427 4-speed Caprice to restore . It's such a complete car thats correct all the way down to the fuel filter which is unique to the car . So many Cool options , too bad the frame is rusted but a donor frame and pieces of the original frame with the vin number would make it a legal car to register and enjoy . The DMV is really getting picky about VIN numbers and always cover your ass when restoring an old car especially one thats rare like your Caprice . I'd surely keep in touch with the old man you bought the car from as him saying he knew where a lot of old cars are would be a great friend to have . Man you scored another great Chevy to add to your collection .

In 1970 there was a painter in Topsfield MA who had a 1968 2dr Impala 427 with a "3 on the tree". He didn't order it, it had been on the lot forever and the dealer couldn't wait to get rid of it.

Great to see you working through the issues live on camera. Nice find! I'm working on a 69 Impala 350/300 AC car and to get it running, I installed an HEI Distributor and ran a 16gauge wire to the ignition switch through the fuse box.

I bought one back in 99, mines an impala custom though..L48 factory Corvette engine ordered by first owners.. full power with comfortron air.. only missing power vacuum locks and hideaways. Was offered hideaway setup. Declined as I don't see changing out radiator support and deal vacuum. Just had engine rebuilt, installed new reproduction interior, suspension rebuilt, and finished in original color repaint.. was offered 70k .. I parked it back in 2001. Pulled out 8 months ago and started restoration.. I could've just reseal the engine as compression was still at 125, which is still good for daily driver attending shows when driven.
