Will It Run?!? - Cub Cadet 1641, Part 1

Will this mid-90s "Cyclops" Cub 1641 run and drive itself off the trailer after sitting for 3 years? With no oil in the crankcase of the Briggs Vanguard and a previous owner complaint of "lack of power," we are concerned but hopeful. Let's dive headfirst into the fuel system, poke around this corroded electrical system, and figure out what it needs to drive itself into the shop for some TLC.
We post more stuff about our various endeavors all over the place!

I bought one new in 91, 3 point hitch with tiller. Excellent machine i traded it for a 7260 in 2000, had that 15 years. We had a super good Cub dealer back then, one of the best in the country, he had great connections with the factory. One Saturday i popped in to the dealership to drool on the new toys, he was running a brand new 21XX ish machine with a full array of gauges. I asked him about the setup, he said he did a pile of testing for the factory. He's gone and so is the dealership. I have new stuff now, Kubota, Kioti, Exmark. They all work well but nothing is more fun to mow with than Cub Super 2072 with a Kohler V twin, power steering, power lift, cigar in one hand steering in the other. Mowing my lawn is a social event for me, nothing comes close. Sorry for the babbling.

Enjoyed the background and story! I will agree that operating the old Cubs is a true joy. My favorite at the moment is a mid 90s 1862. Power steering, Kohler Magnum, and that nice tight turning radius make for a smooth drive.

I don't think I've come across one that wasn't pooched, if it wasn't garage kept.

After a few minutes watching this and it would run a little on starter fluid and then quit and more starter fluid and then quit I thought right away it was the fuel solenoid. I found this out as there were 2 wires coming from underneath the engine shroud up near the carburetor but only 1 going to the bottom of the carburetor ,come to find out the 2 wires actually connect to the 1 wire underneath the carb and then on the switch 1 wire goes to the solenoid terminal along with the solenoid wire and the other goes to the run position on the switch on mine anyway that way it will get fuel when its cranking and also while running. By the way I want to thank You for the help you gave me on my electrical fiasco I ended up replacing all the chassis wiring and replace missing wires on the engine (Kohler CH20). It is running vey good and I had to make a longer driveshaft and install new flex couplers and Bearings on both ends. Thanks Soluna Garage!

I got my plastics back on my 1862. I could use a new nose piece. There’s more epoxy in it than plastic and it’s still cracked.

From your short videos, this appears to eventually receive a magnum 20. Do magnum 20s fit right in to regular cyclops GTs? I know they only came on supers from the factory. I realize this cub came w a 16hp vanguard, but if it were an 1862, would a magnum 20 plug and play easily?

Good catch! Yes, this one goes through a pretty major overhaul and in the end will be powered by an M20. The wiring, driveshaft, exhaust, firewall, muffler, and provision for oil filter and oil drain as well as the engine mounting holes are all different between Vanguard and Magnum. But, the difference between an M20 and M18 in a Cyclops is virtually nothing. Supers and GTs both share the same engine bay. An M20 will drop right in with no changes at all to a Cyclops like an 1862. I will say, however that they are a tight fit. The M20 cylinder jugs are longer to accommodate the longer stroke. This means they just barely fit between the side panels.

Do you have a video on changing axle seal on Cyclops?

This video series on the 1641 will include that process.
