Plastic melted by ethanol is my vote. I've gotten some chinesium pumps in the past with rubber/plastic parts that wasn't resistant to ethanol and ended the same way. Since it appears that pump was replaced before.
@JM-lk6wo
@JM-lk6wo 2 месяца назад
I'm amazed that the pump failed (apparently) twice with 64k miles on the vehicle. Very low durability of the original and the first replacement. I have an 03 Silverado that had the original pump replaced at 198k miles solely because the pressure sensor (p/o EVAP system) had failed. We agreed that the entire pump assembly should be replaced rather than pay the same labor again if the pump failed in the near future.

Yup use low ethanol fuel in your vintage cars.
@Gizmo42Rodeo
@Gizmo42Rodeo 2 месяца назад
That was my guess as well but also assisted by excessive heat from running the tank down to E. Which is probably what took out the original pump.
@Gizmo42Rodeo
@Gizmo42Rodeo 2 месяца назад
@@JM-lk6wo given the fact the fuel level was down to E I'm guessing that's what killed the original pump. In tank pumps need to be in fuel to help cool them. Should not run them below 1/4 tank.

Pro tip: Japanese screws are not Phillips but actually JIS. They are semi-interchangeable but Philips will round a JIS as Philips is designed to cam out, whereas JIS is not. Their profiles are different as well.
@miscbits6399
@miscbits6399 2 месяца назад
JIS used to be hard to get. They're now quite easy - Even Sealey are selling JIS driver sets Edit: JIS drivers work just as well in Phillips heads as JIS ones. Phillips heads DO NOT work well in JIS heads and tend to damage them when you overtorque or are trying to remove stubborn ones That makes JIS drivers a fairly logical "go to", especially if you are using pound-through drivers

@RainmanRaysRepairs Absolutely agree about folks getting their knickers knotted up for the sake of argument. They've lost the ability to recognize that a different view isn't necessarily an opposing view. There are multiple fields of expertise where knowing multiple solutions to solve problems is invaluable. One problem could have 15 answers, none wrong per se. There'll be advantages and disadvantages to each approach. Knowing multiple fixes let's us choose the one that suits the situation. I'm sure there are numerous 'perfect' fixes out there, but those often exist in a vacuum. When you don't own every tool, or have unlimited money, or unlimited time... You have to make decisions.

Don't let anyone change the way you operate, Ray. I think you're very responsible and deal with the liquids you have to dispose of.properly. I just joined here, wouldn't have done that if I thought your content wasn't some of the best here on YT! Thank you for another interesting video. And for a great Lauren/WifeUnit cameo. Love to see you two interact.

I think you're commenting on social and political issues is pretty hilarious and needed. We all could use humor to remember who and at times what we are doing wrong. Your respect for Lauren is very important and respectful Ray. Blocking out certain parts shows how much love you have for your wife unit. Fantastic job Ray

You can tell I am getting old because I didn't even notice the huge amount of respect Ray showed his wife until I noticed the censored blob. Great video, as always! Being a Japanese truck, there is a chance that the screws on the filler neck and the fuel pump were JIS instead of Philips. The tooling is "kinda" compatible between the two, but when you use a JIS screwdriver on a JIS screw, you will notice how well it works.

Not enough traction. I use a craftsman GT6000 to tow lawnmowers around and on the big heavy ones it struggles with traction at times and the heaviest ones only weigh about 1400 pounds.

Bought a new nissan pickup in 93 for 10k out the door. Put 170k miles on it. Still looked and ran great when I sold it. I had to sort it out when it was new, as it was evidently a Friday afternoon or Monday morning build. Danced with nissan over a noise in the 5 speed transmission. Finally pulled it myself and found bad bearings on the mainshaft. Once I got it sorted out, it was rock solid.

I have spent a total of 6 weeks in CA in my 61 years…I don’t care if I ever go back. I’m sure that there are normal areas of CA, unfortunately almost all of my time was spent in the LA, San Francisco and San Diego areas where everything was outrageously priced.

Good on you for the discretionary blur. I've seen that sludge before in a fuel tank when someone sabotaged a fuel system. Luckily the fuel filter did its job and prevented the sludge from reaching the injectors. As far as we could tell, it was a combination of mothballs and cornsyrup.

I have seen this done. Wanna say it was Mortske Repair some years back, but it involved two Ferds, one the bed was unbolted and moved off to the side, and I forget how the other one was accomplished if I recall right. The bed is held in by 4 or 6 bolts, which I think may be easier than accessing the tank from below if you do not have a lift.

Many years ago, in Niceville, FL,(circa 1971), my friend owned a 20-ft boat and had it warehoused. He needed to have it forklifted any time he wanted to use it. He maintained it was a hole in the water in which to pour $$$. Have a nice day.

You're right but I heard it as a play on words being... "A boat is just a hull in the water you pour $$$ into." My dad bought like 3 trolling motors and 2 or 3 sets of 3 batteries, new carpet for a ranger bass boat.

Adding some Acetone to the fuel is touted to bring catalytic converters back to life. However, some older cars had plastic fuel system components that were attacked by the acetone, which is a solvent for many kinds of plastic. The result can be a partially dissolved plastic part that looks like the goo you found.
@fuelpro1
@fuelpro1 3 дня назад
Hey Ray, we're neighbors. I'm in Sarasota. Just a hypothesis, but if that goo was from overheating it would have solidified when cool. I think that might be ethanol eating the fuel components. Very common in marine industry. Hopefully the new pump was built to withstand the brutality of ethanol.
