I actually have this same backhoe and it's been sitting in a shed for a few years so this video comes in handy as I want to get it running again. Last time it was running it seemed to be either leaking or pumping diesel fuel out the fuel tank when the engine was running. Otherwise all in working order. Bought it at auction from our school district complete with all the mechanics manuals for $3,000. Engine was completely rebuilt just before it went to auction. Thanks for the great video - really enjoyed it.

Looks like a Ford 4500. The predecessor to the 555. These were super powerful backhoes and know for having enough power to rip them selves apart. I have a 1975 Ford 4500 and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Very efficient, powerful machines. The perfect "home owner" machine. The torque converter trans acts as a shuttle shift and makes it really easy to operate.

Amazing thing that you manage to start nearly ALL of them, even when given up for dead! Back when I was mostly driving junk and doing first starts like yourselves, I learned a couple of things I really should have taken along with me...first, a nice length positive and negative battery cables, preferably the good, heavy 6 volt ones. Then a battery terminal cleaning brush, and a pair of battery pliers, plus a couple pair of "military type" bolt on battery terminals. Don't forget the wasp and hornet spray, and the DEET insect repellent. And, never just pound the terminals on and expect it to be a good enough connection! Now days however, I still carry around a hammer crimper, wire terminals and a lot of other crap I never use! But then, I'm nearly 80 and somewhat limited, but still love old machinery, and watching other folks work on it!!

I have the same backhoe I just started working on but mine is a 3500 Ford. I always attempt to have some way of putting out a fire when ever possible. In the field I started a fire under an 8n gas tank inches away.....I always give slight misty sprays of ether starting fluid WHILE the motor is turning over. If you spray to much you can lock up the motor. Great video as always guys...It's a great feeling bring on back to life like a ford 3000 loader we just brought back from the dead after a couple years sitting. LOL had two Gallons of water in the hydraulics..NO LIE ....Possibly being saved from the junk yard demon.

Howdy Hank. Love all your videos up here in Prosser Washington ((state). My day started his septic tank business ages ago in the 60s into the 90s. Sorry to say we lost him at 86 years of age in Jan 2015. Dad started out with a Massey-Ferguson backhoe but after that, he stayed with Case and then he bought a new John Deere 310. I enjoy all your videos! Keep the videos coming! Gods Powerful Blessings to you and all of your families ❤️❤️

I had a 69 Ford 4500 backhoe. It had a 16 ft hoe by wain roy and that machine was one bad ass digging boss rig. Power and speed best match up I've ever run, that engine wide open, sweet music! The loader arm was broke on left side just like this one, same spot. They pushed it back together and welded it never lined it back up level and miserable to clean up with. One tough repair, I was happy to have oldt timer fabricator/ welder on it. He cut all but about a half inch of boom out and the work began, no easy task by any means. Wasn't off by much when he was done. Best overall TLB I've ever run. It would out dig any machine compatible no doubt about it. I wish I had kept that machine !!

I'm 99% sure, I own the same backhoe, which I bought off my brother. The thing had been sitting for 8 years, and it started up, right after a little bit of cranking, that was impressive. I'm still learning about this machine, but it has no clutch pedal. It has a "stick shift" for changing the gears, and a "Forward/Reverse" lever next to the steering wheel. With no clutch pedal on the machine, I need to come to a "complete stop", bring the idle speed down to it's lowest minimum, then I can "shift"smoothly without grinding gears.

It looks like mine which is a 1969 3500 industrial...look down on the bottom of the backhoe near the twist chain. Should have a date.

Starter oil seal is bad. That starter has oil behind it and requires a oil seal on the starter drive If that seal leaks it fills the starter eith oil.

'How about you' this is a phrase used readily in County Derry, Northern Ireland. Today it has been shortened to 'Bouchee' which people understand the same. You must have Irish ancestors!
