Magnus playing poorly (compared to his past standards) is a result of him not caring about classical chess. I dont even think he prepped for the tourney.

Magnus is currently rated 1st at 2829.4…Fabiano is 2nd at 2802.2 Magnus’s live rating is 2836.3 So no, Magnus won’t lose world #1 anytime soon, unless he has a historical meltdown. (Which let’s be serious.. it’s not happening in the next year for sure… in the next 2-3 years, things will definitely be…interesting…)

As good as Magnus Carlsen is, he has no more than 3 years left being the #1 chess player in the world. The young talent will surpass him. Father time is still undefeated.
They are 30 points apart dude. At that level, even winning against top opponents gives you like 0.5 points and losing takes away 10. There is no way he is close in points. They only way he can surpass Magnus at this point is if Magnus loses 30 points.
Magnus has lost interest in classical chess. I'm pretty sure that at this point the man just walks into the playing hall and decides what opening he's going to play on the spot, without doing any serious prep. If he ever gets back his motivation somehow, I'm sure he will be at the number one spot for at least five more years.
