Earlier this month, Sen. Denny Hoskins prevailed in a very crowded GOP primary for secretary of state - winning the 8-way contest with a little over 24 percent of the vote.
The Warrensburg Republican campaigned on a promise of hand counting ballots instead of using counting machines. This is a highly controversial idea, and many election officials contend it would be logistically difficult to do - especially for larger counties.
During the Missouri State Fair last week, I asked Hoskins if he was going to use the power of his office to require local election officials to hand count ballots - or whether he would ask the legislature to mandate it. I also asked the two major candidates for governor, Democrat Crystal Quade and Republican Mike Kehoe, whether they would sign or veto such a bill.
