#earthbound #mother3 #nintendo Yeah I dunno, lots of people have been pretty gloomy about this entire thing, so I saw it best to make a video on it and share my perspective!
In an odd way I feel like a remake is more likely than a newly translated GBA rom, it would allow them to more flexibly avoid/redesign/rewrite certain things that they might fear would put them in hot water too. It'd fit their new trend of remakes basically not saying they're remakes in the title too given it would technically be a first time release here lol. Just my rambling
A remake is something I'm kinda 50/50 on, I would lean more towards them remaking Earthbound since that's easily the most well-known, loved, and respected entry in the series. However, if this hypothetical Earthbound remake did sell well I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest in Mother 3 followed shortly after, especially considering how Earthbound ends on a cliff-hanger that actively leads into Mother 3.
If it wasn’t for mother 3 I would’ve never figured out emulation.. and I’m sure I’m not the only one lol. But I think once the hype for the game gets at a critical mass, they will drop it for $60 on switch and we will all buy it and play it again haha. Maybe wishful thinking but idk.. these people are literally marketing geniuses
It's weird since Nintendo in general has always been really bad about dangling Earthbound over their customers heads in a way that, to the untrained eye, looks malicious. It's really more of a way of assuring their legacy content maintains its value I guess, which to me is even more evident by Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings being a few dollars extra on the Wii U than other NES and SNES games. Granted, that could've been due to some weird music licensing thing we aren't privy too, but to me it kinda makes it seem like they want to make sure Earthbound retains it's value as a franchise to use a re-release or something similar in place of a brand new game on their release schedule. They're stretching out the hype to slowly but surely draw attention to the series, that way when they do choose to do something with it everyone loses their minds.
One of the reasons that may explain this (at least based on Moon Channel's search for a legal reason) is that the game has a soundtrack that is hard (REALLY HARD) to get the rights for; I recommend the video to get an interesting history on music legal history and repercussions from a California court ruling. The best chance for Mother 3 would be that there's enthusiasm for a "from the ground up" remake ala SMRPG: LotSS that can change the music of the game. So, buy SMRPG switch?
I'm going to hold my tongue for now since I'm thinking about making a video exploring the entire legal situation with Mother 3, but from my research, while Mother 3's soundtrack does have some problematic tracks, I don't think that the situation is as grim as Moon puts it out to be. Obviously I'm not a lawyer or anything and I'm being vague as to not potentially mislead someone since it's still something I'm actively researching, but what legal problems could arise have very easy work around imo. Moon's video is great though, screw copyright law lol!
I think that they don't have the tools to localize it, they'd basically need to make a rom hack... but still, I don't think it's impossible, maybe it'll be tommorow.
i think earthbound/mother and starfy are kinda in the same situation, except earthbound/mother has a *slight* bigger chance concidering that the first two game are already in english and are kinda known.
Most people are gonna have a pessimistic pov, but I'm with you on this one. As bleak as it may seem sometimes, there'll come a day where this dream will become a reality.
Mother 3 is my favorite game of all time, so it hurts to have it exclusive to Japan. I am so thankful for the fan translation ehoch I played on a repro cart on my GBA, which honestly felt like I played it officially. On a side tangent, I hope we get Dragon Quest X localized here too.
Mother 3 worldwide ? How about .... Mother /Earthbound... Releasing in Europe 🤠 translated into any languages other than English?! That would be a dream 😂
Yeah I totally get that, Nintendo's localization department doesn't really inspire much confidence in me as of late, especially considering how badly they butchered a lot of scripts as of late, namely Tears of the Kingdom was (like dude they totally screwed that up). However, I'd hope that if they finally decide to localize it, it'd be done in a similar way the first two titles were. With Itoi being heavily involved to make sure none of the nuance was lost in translation, and that he has faith in the localizers to make the game great overseas. I know Nintendo handles localization a lot differently now than how they did back during the NES and SNES era, but if they did decide to do it I wouldn't be shocked if they decided to handle it a bit differently than a normal modern game of theirs (at least I'd hope)
Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, even if it goes against what the fat internet red man is saying! Go crazy, I'm glad that it at least made you think about Mother 3, even if you ultimately disagree with my perspective
@@MamaLouiji yeah even though I’m probably more on the side of the things you brought up counterpoints to, you really hit on every reasoning I know most mother fans have. I just don’t think Reggie is telling the full story on reasoning, and that there is a bit more to the fan translation in concerns to how Itoi sees it vs Nintendo. But that’s just speculation on my end
All I know is if we’re still asking nearly 20 years later - that’s our answer. As sad as it is :/ Edit: okay, having actually watched the full video (lolol) you bring up a lot of good points! The franchise is very much alive, and Nintendo knows that. I think you were able to shed a little bit of genuine hope here

@@MamaLouiji I think you did a super good job of bringing up facts and data to support your claims. I mean the other games you mentioned getting translated and released? If those super obscure games can, then so can Mother 3!
My personal theory is that if and when Mother 3 DOES get a localised release, it won't just be a mere translation of the GBA game, but a full on remake, either standalone or as part of a collection. Nintendo could either go the Live A Live route and keep the sprite-based graphics but in a 2.5D look, recreate everything with stylised 3D models a la Link's Awakening, or recreate it entirely and revive what Earthbound 64 was supposed to be. But I definitely think if Nintendo want to localise Mother 3, they're going to treat it as something special and not just a mere addition to NSO.
Honestly, who cares if it’s controversial to some folks. It was 2006 and Japanese culture has and will always be different from America’s. It’s just a fact that *real* gamers already know and accept. No amount of social media drama can ever ruin the reputation of Nintendo or Mother.
