Gorgeous animation to a gorgeous poem, love the careful attention to make sure the puppet exactly matches the description!

Thanks! I did try to stay close to Cawein's description. It turned the character into a weird little dude. He even has a whippoorwill mouth.

Superb little film, and very atmospheric use of the ambient soundscape. I wouldn't be surprised if Will-O-The-Wisp sometimes crosses paths with The Changeling! Would love to see more of both these characters!

Thanks! I think both of these little imps are retired, but there will be other critters from folklore popping up every now and then.

Only one remark, or maybe suggestion on the future, if I may. Face is to tense. Face of deceased, even if person died in fear, is relaxed, moth is open, but lower jaw is meek, slightly retracted back (if body is laying like that), it's a battle, if you will, between weight of a jaw and how far jaw muscles allow it to go. Don't show teeth, when you go face muscles relax long before they'll harden. Less is more when portraying death. Uncanny, motionless stare. It's not about how extreme you make your face - end of life is scary on it's own, how environment interacts with body, and how it don't respond like an alive person would. Pose here is too unnatural, like if he stand in water looking up and screaming at sky. Tilting and lowering head would help an illusion. Here's where environment would come to play, water slowly exiting mouth, algae marks, maybe few strings of aquatic weeds across face, like metaphoric shackles holding him in place.
@TheLoneAnimator
@TheLoneAnimator 9 месяцев назад
Point taken. I wasn't sure if the narrator was actually dead or a spectre, so I chose to make his face scary and extreme.

Captured quickly by this one, it did a lot with subtile footfalls and swamp sounds and a nice "twist" ending appropriate for a will-o-the-wisp. Listening to the poem, I though this must be someone in Lovecraft's circle, but I have not heard of Cawien who far predates them. Huh; his waste land inspired Elliot's! Does his verse often get into the beloved _weird?_
@TheLoneAnimator
@TheLoneAnimator 9 месяцев назад
Cawein certainly touches on the weird in his poems, but no; I don't think he was much appreciated by the Lovecraft circle or the readers of weird fiction at the time.

The Will-O-The-Wisp reminds me a lot of the Nokken of Norse folklore. I wonder if they have some common origin.

In Sweden we have the Lantern Man, which is basically the same thing. Sometimes he's a ghost, sometimes a gnomish creature. In all cases he carries a lantern with a glowing coal from the embers of Hell.

Thank you for this, Maestro! Atmospheric, and a unique Will O' The Wisp. Beautifully realized, it is a lovely tribute to "The Keats Of Kentucky", the underrated Madison Julius Cawein. Were it not for the changing taste in styles of poetry, his poems such as "Wasteland", "A Dream Shape" , " The Vampire", and many others might be known to readers today.
