The main advantage of relic guitar is that when you bought an expensive guitar, you are not afraid to take it out of the case and play it.

I don’t mind playing my mint guitars either. If you worry about scratches and dents you aren’t a guitarist, you need help with OCD When i started out in the mid 90’s I met this guy in a metal cover band, his guitar was beat up and i asked him if that bothered him. He said, no they are battle scars, each one tells a story of a gig or practice. They didnt happen in the case. It really made me see things aren’t meant to be perfect looking

@@OttophilOne of my dings literally happened in the case the first time I opened it, cause the headphones I was wearing fell on the guitar. I let people think it was a battle scar :-)

This is exactly the question that's been on my mind recently, especially after Andertons' visit to Gibson and their interview with Tom Murphy and his description of how easily the finish that he applies will show wear and tear. That instantly made me wonder if it will create a whole new crazy part of the guitar market for "naturally-reliced" pre-reliced instruments!

Your channel is the best. And I also love light, aged reliced nitro guitars with thin lacquer. It’s a feel thing. I also want my jeans to be comfortable from the beginning. I still have one non nitro guitar left. It’s from 1983 and it looks more or less new except from some divots in the fingerboard due to playing.

Great video Kris as always. I’ve gone from being a critic to a fan of aging. I got a 2019 56 CS strat aged but not too heavily and I’ll tell you the removal of finishing on the neck made it play so much better. And like the other fellow said, I don’t worry about it getting dings or dents. I play it way more often than my 59 CS LP (not reliced). Especially when taking it out and playing with others. Plus it looks awesome 👍

I used to chain my guitars to my Ford F-150’s bumper and drag them a 1/4 mile down the dirt and gravel road nearby. But I don’t anymore, because Fender and Gibson really know how to do it now. I can buy one off the rack and save myself some work! 🤠

Thanks for this vid. Been a bit bummed how delicate my journeyman (my first relic) has been in only a few months. I look at it the wrong way an it gets a mark down to the wood. Now I feel it's just becoming truly mine.

Hey Kris, happy new year, very interesting video, I ordered a '69 Strat from the Fender Custom Shop in Super heavy Relic, the highest Relic level before Ultimate Relic comes out. Once I have my Strat, I'll have it frozen too. It'll be the best sounding guitar I'll own, but I'll have to wait a bit until it arrives. What do you say on the subject, would you freeze a guitar? Hey, thanks for the sub! 🙏 Yeah I do make reviews on pedals and stuff that Thomann sells, but I also have tons of gear that they don’t sell. My PJD guitars, my Baum Wingman, quite a few pedals, etc. 🤷‍♂️ Essentially I’m the same guy here as on the Thomann channel but whatever I do here is completely independent from Thomann. This is basically my playground channel, haha!

I bought a Fender Custom Shop Strat with a Journeyman relic which is my preference...I'm not into the whole heavy relic thing but prefer a subtle one that will acquire my own personal genuine patina.After lots of gigging it is certainly showing it's wear and tear with the paint beginning to flake off and rub out at the top edge where my arm rubs against the body and where the strap rubs on the side and the belt buckle wear on the back.The Journeyman paint thickness is extremely thin and flakes off really easily.

That's my favorite Tele pickguard hole pattern. The missing screw in the middle on top makes the whole look to me.

Had alot of discussions with my guitarist(a girl btw and a damn good guitarist) about ageing on guitars and of course we will never see eye to eye about that but still respect each others opinions. Personally I'm for natural ageing whereas she bought a beautiful aged stratocaster! I can understand her point of view in that the guitar is awesome but still she could've gotten a guitar with the same playability for far less money. But your point about getting a guitar with low relic and then let it happen naturally is a viable option:)

Cool vid. Sums everything up nicely I think. As for me I may lose sleep over a ding in one of my guitars. Prefer one without any flaws, with the sturdiest finish possible when buying to make sure it stays like new for the longest possible time. But at the end of the day all that really matters the most is how these damn things play, feel and sound :)

That's why my Rickenbacker and Les Paul are in such great shape- I hardly ever play them because they are so pretty and I worry about damaging them . My Fenders have picked up numerous dents and scratches and that doesn't bother me so much these days, I just enjoy playing them . Perhaps it's my own weird psychology but to me , Fenders are utilitarian objects, tools to be used and the other brand guitars are there to look at like art and must be kept pristine.

I am currently working on my second Squier upgrade project. I buy cheap second hand, unloved beginners guitars so I can teach myself how to do refrets, pickup wiring and other luthier skills. The goal is to one day buy a top end body and neck from Franchin Guitars so I can build myself a custom shop quality instrument for a fraction of the cost

I have a tele 52 reissue since 1996. Small dings a bit of oxidised tuners and bridge and s ratches on the pickguard. My question is Any relic guitar either heavy or lightly reliced costs along of money only for the aesthetic part? Looking collectable? Looking old? Or maybe a part of the relic ageing procedure has to do with drying woods making it lighter? I once played the super relic JEFF BECK TELE price 15.000 eur and the guitar weighted less than the expected light weight. Because if there is not any wood ageing that affects the sound I d prefer a normal guitar and a sand paper to scratch it wear it plus a box cutter to put out some chips of the finish without paying huge money. What is your opinion about that? Thanks Paul Athens Greece

The cheapest choice is buy a secondhand guitar , in my case was in 2010 (made in 2007) with a limited edition Wildwood Guitars shop order to Fender factory of a Telecaster AVRI 52 "thin skin". I bought it for 1200€, now it sells for 1800€

My belief is that relic guitars are favoured as stock by shops because if you ding a pristine $5k instrument in a shop it's a problem but relic, who'd notice? most very expensive instruments sit in shops for months and are the eye candy that people come in to see but buy £500 instruments on the way out.

I recently built my own Strat. At first I didn't want to relic it. But then I made a cosmetic mistake on the finish and then I was totally fine to relic the guitar to cover my mistake. ;)

Hey man, nice to see you around! 🙌 Yeah I love the D40 and use it all the time. 😅 I still have my white Dynamis but it doesn’t get enough playing at the moment. I feel bad about that, it’s such a killer amp, it should be played all the time.

Happy new year Kris! I think the aging has to fit the guitar. Can't imagine a heavy aged PRS for example 😅 Are there any affordable guitars with Nitro finishes? Or is it worth it to refinish the guitar to get the Nitro finish on a budget?

@@horschy4856 it's expensive, hard to work with and it's just not worth it in general. If you want nitro just buy a guitar with nitro, if you are into fenders just get a mexican road worn or any gibson lower end

Look for the Mexican Fender Roadworn guitars. They have a poly undercoat but have a nitro topcoat and are slightly aged from the factory. They are discontinued but you can still find them.

I thought was a joke at first ! Why would someone presume a "relic" guitar won't continue to age with use ? Probably my favourite guitar is my '52 reissue Tele that I bought new in 2011. Now it looks similar to Fender's "Closet Classic" or very light relic . Also got a Mexican 60th Anniversary Strat with Desert Sand "Flash coat" and it's showing lots of primer around the edges now.

The finish and the looks in general is not the first or even the 10th factor that I look at when deciding wether to buy a guitar or not. I am kind of lucky because I'm not very picky when it comes to things like that. As long as a guitar plays great and sounds great, I am interested, what I do not like when it comes to aged guitars are dents in the neck but as long as aging does not impact playability, I do not care much. When given a choice I will not pay extra for a relic job though

You can play a modern day Gibson as long as you want, it will never look like a 50's or 60's example. I mean, look at these Norlin era Gibsons, when they changed the formula for the nitro laquer. These really don't look like golden era Gibsons. Even these modern Custom Shop Gibsons from the True Historic Line won't age that well. And you know why, when you ever stripped one of these. But it's a different kind of formula, which Murphy Lab is using. This is why early Murphy Labs often had problems with the finish, which tended to flake off the guitar.

The real point is not relic or not relic, but the finish thickness. A non relic thin nitro finish will vibrate and resonate in a wonderful way, while a fake relic 3 mm poly plastic finish will be a crappy guitar anyway

Not so sure about that. I had a Jackson once that was a very resonant feeling guitar. I was trying out finishes and ended up having several very thick coats of poly on it. It was still very resonant. I couldn't tell the difference at all.

People need to stop getting their knickers in a twist over this. It's very simple. Some people like reliced (to whatever degree) guitars, some don't. Each for their own reasons. There is no need to judge either. Let people like what they like. I do have an opinion about it, but that affects MY choice of guitars. I'd never call someone out for having a different choice.

Relic Guitars are a sales gimmick. Would you buy a new car with dents and scratches for more money than a clean new car? I doubt it. Who scuffs up their shoes to pretend they've walked a lot? It's weirdo level shit. Also, if someone has a guitar that looks like that, they need to stay away from mine. lol

Reproduction antique furniture comes with a distressed finish option. Pre-worn jeans come faded and ripped as new. Stonewashed jeans come pre-faded as new. Ratrod cars come rusty and dented as new. Relic guitars aren't unique. Plenty of people like a worn in look from day 1. It doesn't have to be your cup of tea and it's not mine either - but it's their money and their choice how they spend it. It's not a "sales gimmick" to simply offer an affluent segment of your customers what they want for a upcharged labour rate (it undeniably takes more labour hours to relic a finished guitar, and can't cost less) - it's good business practice.

@@PaulCooksStuff Even when I go to a thrift store, I look for serviceable things. I just don't want junk that has less shelf life. A beat up anything naturally or artificially is exactly that. You can have a Luther do break in work, or just do it yourself if you have tools and half a brain. I just think it is dopey and you can spot the posers who own them. I am just not impressed with intentionally damaged goods. Seems a bit like cutting the value, not adding to it in any way. That is a physiological issue perhaps, but prove me wrong.

@@rofflestomp684 how does scratched paint shorten the shelf life of a guitar? If they banged up the frets, sure, that reduces the useful life. But they don't. A guitar with pristine green paint has the same shelf life as a guitar with pristine red paint - they're just cosmetic finish options. In the same vein, a guitar with a relic finish has the same shelf life as a guitar with pristine paint - it's just another cosmetic finish option. There's lots of colours I wouldn't buy because they're not my taste (yellow, orange, black). There's lots of finish styles I wouldn't buy because they're not my taste (glitter, matte). They appeal to other people and that's fine by me - we all like different things, broader choice is good for everyone. Relic is just another cosmetic finish that's not for me, but I'm happy it exists to cater for the tastes of those who do. Nobody is forcing me to buy an orange glitter guitar, nobody is forcing me to buy a relic. Their mere existence doesnt reduce my range of choices. I don't have to prove you wrong - there is no right and wrong in matters of taste and quantity of choices.

@@PaulCooksStuff I get that. I like your logic and point. It really is a matter of personal taste, Not that I get the vibe of it, but there it is and that is quite sound. I have an issue that it does nothing for the build. It's just a vanity thing. I have no interest in that personally. I just know from experience that it is superficial. But you are quite correct, it is a matter of taste.

... Teles are a/the thing no matter being reliced or not ... Since i got a guitar with a worn neck finish i tend to like this feel ... Never liked the nitro finish because of the stickiness it develops over time 🤮 ... so nitro should meet the sandpaper until its gone mostly All me DIYs do have a thin acrylic lacquer on the body and oil finish on the neck ... and i love the simplicity and "woody feel" 🪵 Your neck looks great ... must be a players axe .... cudos 😁
