Downwind SUP Foiling mania is sweeping the world...this exciting discipline has captured the imagination of many including our co-founder, Will. In part 5, Will gets coaching by Ross Bazely (Armstrong/Kite Barn Rider) to improve his pumping technique, a skill he identified he needed to improve to progress his downwind journey. This video is full of tips to help foilers improve very common technique issues but also breaks down the mechanics of pumping to give you a better understanding of how it works.

Really really good breakdown. I’m paddling and just starting my early porpoising. Next will be back foot lift.

Hi Henry. I am forever reminding myself to keep my head and shoulders up and keep an eye on where I am aiming for, rather than a few metres ahead of me. That made a big difference to my pump game. Also, finding that sweet spot with feet closer together feels like it keeps it all more efficient. Work in progress! Ross

Thanks for producing this video as it is one of the best I've seen for learning the pump technique! I started to learn to pump with a Foil Drive using as 6'10 @128L downwind SUP and high aspect foil Axis Art Pro 1201 but realised that set up is tricky as need speed and have to hold the paddle and then figure out how to pump. I then got smaller board 4'6 x22 @50L and a bigger lower aspect foil Axis PNG1300. That set up was the game changer as I'm using Foil Drive to get up and then set my front front back to go into weightlessness - then I'm in the ideal position to learn to pump. All Ross's tips are exactly what I have been working on and this video is great as it shows what Will is doing wrong (sorry Will but I'm doing the same things too :-) so I can see what I need to improve. Thanks again for the all the tips!

Hi Stevo! Brilliant to hear that you can relate to the points we covered. Being able to analyse and address aspects of Will’s technique in such a controlled environment was a really rewarding experience. Stepping down a board size, moving from 1201 to 1300 and narrowing your stance all sound like sensible changes. Sounds like you have got that weightless sensation on the top of your pump. That is always a sign to me that I am getting it right! Did you find it a bit of an unnerving and counter intuitive feeling getting your narrower stance in the sweet spot? I had to train myself to do this, but it makes for a far more efficient pump, as all my effort to drive off the foil goes through the mast, rather than into porpoising the board - something I continue to work on!

@@lasersurfsailing3870 I have been sharing your video around so it helps others as much as me. For all my other boardsports I like a wide stance but found narrowing my foil stance was easy but had to think about doing it by bringing my front foot in - but there was an immediate benefit. I also have an electric skateboard that I commute to work on and I practice the foil pumping technique on that - which might look a bit odd while doing 30kmph down the road - but it helps with muscle memory and avoiding hunching over while keeping relaxed posture.

Great video. Watching good pump foilers I noticed the arm movement behind the waist on compression. Some foilers just do this movement without moving arms much further than waist high on opposite movement. Once I concentrated on mimicking this movement it accelerated my pump game.

Yes I have noticed that too, particularly amongst the pro pumpers. They seem to do less arm swinging. For me the arm swing helped initially to get some kind of rhythm going. The more I practice the more I get used to the rhythm without needing the arms so much. I guess that is muscle memory. I feel like I can conserve a bit more energy doing that. I have also found that my feet are getting closer together at the same time as using less arms. I think this helps me to put more energy down through the mast, which makes my pump more efficient. Also, as my arms stay closer to my body now I seem to be able to avoid those off balance wobbles and corrections more. These were zapping my rhythm before! Ross

Yes, agree. @@lasersurfsailing3870 the good foilpumpers are efficient with just right amount of arm movement. I like the explanation of weighting and unweighting through a sine wave. It’s not a jerky up and down movement but like riding a sine wave with you weighting and unweighting when pumping. In the beginning I was doing a hopping up and down and no forward momentum so I would just drop. You definitely have to get the feeling of projecting your weight forward but no too much or too little, if that makes sense…

Maintaining a cyclical amount of pressure through the foil whilst simultaneously being conscious of ‘allowing the wing to glide’ is what is in my head…as I also keep the mast as high as possible! Ross
