Thank you so much JamesBurrTV for posting this South Bank Show interview with Will Self. I hadn't seen it since it was first broadcast in the 1990s. He is still so inspring.
Will Self wrote ''How the Dead live'' (with its ''North London Book of the Dead''), and E.J.Gold wrote ''An American Book of the Dead.'' The Bardo Thodol (Tibetan Book of the Dead) seems to inspire western writers ideas.
There's not one thing that I don't like about Will Self. Yes, the long words can get annoying sometimes but it doesn't take much to have a dictionary at your bosom when reading him!
An intelligent man who seems compulsively pre-occupied with making sure everybody knows it. His recent broadside against George Orwell reveals a small minded man who, with militant fervency, believes in the sycophants who praise his every word without ever stopping to think about what has just been said. However, I must admit that the 'Book of Dave' is a very funny and interesting book that effortlessly straddles the tightrope separating the sublime and the fantastical.
+Josh Tate The actual substance is to an extent irrelevant: it's the beauty of how Self and people like Martin Amis think and deliver their unique brand of intellectual whimsy. It's like eating a pepperoni pizza from Harrods.
Did they? - shock horror! oh well perhaps the death of the south bank show is not such a bad thing after all if they had to lower themselves to that level.
@pillajadud What do you mean, "Karl Pilkington owned him"? I actually felt quite embarrased for Karl, as likeable as he is, you can't say that he isn't naive. For a man to not know who Tony Benn is at his age is not something to be proud of. Despite his rather spiky media persona, in person Will Self is the very paragon of decorum.
@adam0900909 fry is a clunk because he has permitted his media fame to go to his head and has been informed by various other media clunks generating non media that fry is a tech expert and witty dude on QI. remember i was responding to the quote.
@adam0900909 the man is primarily a comedian I dont think he is trying to seem intelligent in some egotistical way i think we is just trying.. and succeeding to be a good comedian
