The slap had nothing to do with protecting black women. The slap was about Will reaching breaking point with folks laughing at them for years and their messy ass marriage.

This was a good move for Will. I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction to make this decision for me.

I just wonder why Will haven't giving us a visual apology. This is Will second written apology. If we are truly to believe his apology is genuine. Apologize on camera for the world to see your face. See your emotions of being regretful of your actions. Will can miss me with the written apology. I want it on video. Show me If it's heartfelt.

While I am recently adjusting my mindset on respectability politics thanks to TikTok lol I believe in this situation he could have just grabbed Jadas hand, walked out & made a statement that way & would have had a bigger/better impact but I also do see where Will hit his breaking point. Hell he might need to plead temporary insanity at this point.

Let's be honest if Will pulled Chris aside to "talk" about it, he would've been the butt of continuous jokes. It probably wasn't the best approach but I understand it & it's over. Also Will resigning means nothing. He's still Oscar award winning Will Smith & I'm sure he'll continue to earn the big bucks.

What does that even mean?? Will Smith pr team came up with this nonsense. If he was really sorry he would of left the Oscars when he was asked too. Look at the way he partied afterwards, he’s not one bit truly sorry. Again you’d think Smith and his wife knowing Chris Rock for over 30 years would of given him the benefit of the doubt that he didn’t know what Jada was going through and would of just spoken to him later about it. He had no choice but to resign. This entire ordeal is a complete disgrace and embarrassment. It takes a lifetime to build a reputation, but only a moment to ruin it. It’s very disappointing.

It's absolutely surprising to me that anyone would condone this act as some form of protection of black women. Jada was not even being threatened if you want to go with that Argument. When you strike someone in that fashion you Can never predict the consequences. He could have fallen back and hit his head he could have tumbled down the steps. Anything could have happened. Then what? I have always liked Will Smith but I am not too blind to see when someone does something wrong. You have to be honest. There is no defense here. Thank you Funky and Claudia. This was an example of toxicity. This not what it looks like for a black man to protect his family. A strong man knows he can’t protect his family if he’s in jail, if he loses his livelihood or if he’s dead. If the average man did something like this either of those things would happen to him. A good wife doesn’t stand by while her husband ruins the biggest night of his career. The fact that Jada did nothing in that moment speaks volumes.

I don't this resignation means anything other than him trying to soften the blow that the Academy will hand down. He already sucked the life out of the ceremony, won the award, attended the parties, and laughed with his family about the "chaos" he caused.😒

I've been with my husband 14 years and married for 13 if my husband acted out of his character like Will in no way will I have just sat still and laugh like Jada. I would have been mortified already thinking of the repercussions of the aftermath

Smith’s resignation means he can no longer vote for the Oscars - but he can still be nominated for future Academy Awards, attend future ceremonies and keep the statue he won. But the Academy’s formal review will continue.

My friend got fired from her job when her boyfriend called himself defending her honor by going to her job and confronting some coworker she was having an issue with. The two of them looked dumb as shit after it was all done. Keeping it real can and will go wrong.

It really hit me when one of these 3 mentioned that Jada as a wife failed to console Will after he returned to his seat after slapping Chris...because we all know by now that Bradley Cooper and Denzel Washington did help calm Will down and talk to him, but not Jada? An appropriate first step before the lawsuits begin. As a member of the music academy, I predict they will just revoke his voting rights. For the TV and film groups, all that this means is that he won't get the CDs or streaming links to vote on. He will be persona non grata. But his wife will still be a member, so it's no real issue, just a gesture.

The fact that he was able to give the longest speech in Oscar history without being played out by music tells me that they kept him on for ratings. They knew that it was more senstional for him to stay. This was also a case of a black man (Packard) protecting another black man. Had it been a white man, Josh Brolin for example, who slapped Rock, I think the outcome would've been different. It would've immediately been racialized and they would've taken him out and been applauded for it and there would be no argument right now. So much to unpack in this story it's nuts. And yes, protect black women, protect women in general, but they don't need protection from a joke.

Taking his Oscar not taking it, is irrelevant. His Oscar has lost all meaning anyway, it's been tainted by a callous act of violence. The problem is, we aren't seeing any consequences to his actions, and it's creating a diversion between society. What he did was immoral and unlawful. We must not lose our moral compass when learning from this. Let's be clear, we know if we were slapped, it would trigger our natural reaction to danger. If you think, that what Will Smith did was justified, and that's the world you live in, don't be surprised if you ever get punched/slapped, and not a damn person cares. Clearly he's experiencing some psychological difficulties, and I wish him the best in that journey. Our main concerns should be on the impacts this has had on Chris Rock's mental health, his recovery from a violent act, and public humiliation and making sure he's okay.

I wish people would act like Chris Rock and let it go. He is trying to heal I'm sure and all anybody can talk about is Will, and put Jada in the grave for his actions. I’m still trying to comprehend why he thought it was ok to slap Chris Rock. He should have spoke to him after the show. There is nothing that makes that ok.
