So about 200 of the 288 comments are people correcting me about ZF being their own independent company, and Mercedes not sourcing many of their transmissions there. Anybody else want to remind me???
you could buy the cheapest car in the country as long as it's not a rare expensive/luxury car. 200$ toyota camry is probably better than a 1000$ porsche. The real lesson fromt his show is that if the deals too good to be true it usually is
I genuinely love your channel. I'm forever trying to get my friends to watch your automotive masochism but they don't seem to get it.... but I get it tyler... I get it. Have a good day all!
We're just going to undo a little bolt here, and...ah there it is. Look at that, the part just comes right out. Now we're just going to give it a little wipe down, isn't that beautiful? What a happy little part.
Most mechanics I know would call it a happy little part with a few more expletives. But not Wizard. This episode is the only time I remember him cursing.
My dear old dad was/is a mechanic and he was eternally fixing cars at home and obviously at work. Watching you two work together reminds me of helping my dad in the school holidays and on weekends.
Hoovie, I had this ZF transmission in my 2005 Jaguar XJ6, it often displayed faults and every single time it was related to a slightly decreased battery voltage. Regardless, pimping aint easy.
Same on my 03 xk8 i had the battery bracket thing on loose to the plus part on my battery and when i drove over a bumb it detacht and then i tried using my window made all the power go low for like a second and the bamm transmission fault but my car was running fine i connected the battery and it was gone lol but now ima do a transmission service cause that spooked me lol but the screws are stripped - pimping aint easy
I used to hang around a shop and on the wall behind the service desk they had their rates posted: Shop Rates: $75.00 per hour $100 per hour if you watch $150 per hour if you help
@@toyotahachiroku8509 oh I know, I was just posting a funny sign I saw in the shop. I bet the wizard gives him huge discounts too due to the volume of business he gets. Now I know wizard has other customers but compared to that tiny place he had before? I bet 1/2 the funding for the new place is from Hoovie.
let me guess it was at a General Motors dealership right? and you forgot the second half of that, 300 dollars if you dont watch them to make sure they do it right and dont screw you like they did with me lol
@@kavinskysmith4094 naw, just a private shop. 2 bays. On Saturdays they never got any work done because it turned into a hangout for the gang. Bunch of local cops hung out too. Tell us stories of their adventures for the week. There's a reason they called dealers "stealers'.
Here in germany we have a contraption to flush the gearbox. A bit like what you use to change the A/C fluid. The machine is spliced into the lines to the transmission oil cooler, the drain plug, the fill plug and instead of the oil filter. It has gauges for the fresh and the used oil so you can see the difference and then you start taking 1 liter oil out and put 1 liter fresh oil in, repeat until the oil in both gauges looks good :D You usually need double the amount of a full oil change to do this, but you get most of the crap out of the trans.
Yes absolutely correct the wizard has only changed about 4 litres of transmission oil , to do a full flush the manual way to get to seeing fresh oil colour he will need to use about 12 litres, the transmission oil with oil cooler is probably about 10 litres when full with the torque converter aswell, a 12 litre flush should see nice clean oil, so fully flushed .Normally about 4 litres out ,4 back in the transmission , pump 4 back out with the transmission radiator return pipe off into a 4 litre container turn engine off, 4 back in transmission and turn car back on to pump 4 back out which will be black ,i do this 3 times and after 12 litres approx it's clean transmission oil. Nice and cherry red colour, i cannot believe wizard only did the gearbox drain that is only about a third out of the old oil.
Hoovie...the last video I saw was the one you did with the Tucker I helped upholster. This is your first video I've seen since I went into the hospital and spent almost 3 weeks in the ICU. Watching these during breaks for rehab. Keep 'em coming!
I think most people didnt watch as they were just disgusted at what they did with the new one, Hell the Evora 400 is more of a NSX than the new NSX, plus it bridged the gap between Hooptie econobox, to hooptie supercar, if only he hadnt lent its successor to a guy with a 10 carat run of bad luck and just done that recall before sending it out to him, although parker is parker, as the thing could have been covered in gas long before all of that and he wouldnt of noticed either way. Plus it is getting rebuilt too and god I hope Freddie really gets on it with that thing, as that ferrari is the reason why I'm Following Freddie Tavarish right now.
that wiring hack job was related to an aftermarket anti-theft device or a navigation lockout when not in park. the aftermarket parts were removed prior to the sale of the vehicle and that is why it was done fast and with no care for the damage.
Buying a whole new part and discovering it's only the wiring or some other minor problem is exactly what I do all the time. Such a feast of recognition.
the car wizard should invest in an automatic transmission oil changer, when i worked at a workshop (apprentice) we had one that used the pressure of the transmission and connected to the hoses to/from the oil cooler
It's like 1:30 in the morning here in Australia, why am I watching hoovies garage I have an assessment due tomorrow Can't help it, literally the best RU-vid channel!
Thanks Tyler & Wizard! I woke up with a throbbing headache and this video put a smile on my face with all the funny moments in this video (what also adds to the silliness is that at the end of the video the channel logo was placed on Tyler's face) 😂😂
I'm in the middle of swapping a new (lightly used) ZF transmission into my Audi A8 and I had settled on valvoline max life ATF even though many say to only use ZF of Pentosin fluids. Thanks for confirming that I can use Valvoline Wizard!
All I want to say about the ZF gearbox is, I had one in my now wrecked Alfa Romeo 164 and it was brilliant. By the way you guys are having way too much fun, very entertaining.
Looks to me like someone messed with the parking, reverse, etc switches in order to have a DVD player or something similar wired up and bypassed when the car is in drive.
Probably so, or it was some kind of reverse camera that was wired to a screen in the dash that was taken out by the previous owner. It's also possible a dealership uninstalled it when the car was sold. Either way most shops are ill-equipped to work on such a car, as that wiring loom clearly shows.
All i can say is that ones you find a mechanic like the car wizard you will never go back the patience and care he takes on cars is amazing, there is nothing worse that someone braking parts and crap while fixing one thing.
Last week was the first time I had ever changed transmission fluid. I had no idea how awful it smells. I gagged. Multiple times. But the car shifts far smoother now, so that's a plus.
If only you knew a mechanic who could check these cars out before you buy them . But that wouldn't be as much fun . The Car Wizard always lives up to the name . Thanks for posting .
Today I learned... If your hoopty fleet is just fledgling, and you bought a cheap mercedes, J and J are the absolute bomb! I am working on ordering my replacement parts now!
@@averagejoeprojects2885 Valvoline Max ATF that they used now meets the ZF spec. Several people on forums have used it with no ill effects. When I serviced mine I used LifeGuard 8 though.
I did not see yours NSXs videos, you miss it and we would love to see the car again, maybe there is a really cheap nxs waiting for you to buy. thanks for yours videos!!!
Lmao at 2:46 , Levante in Italian literally means being lifted or ascending. I guess it’s an apt name, because it’ll spend more time on a lift than on the roads lol
Just to clarify Hoovie and all concerned, the ZF Trans-6HP26 is properly filled on the side fill plug, this ensures the proper level of fluid at 40 Celsius, once it you reaches a steady drip of fluid out of this fill plug opening, the trans is filled properly, this is per ZF, any other method cannot ensure the proper level of of trans fluid is reached. Only Ravenol and ZF Lifeguard6 fluids are approved by ZF. Source-Myself, Maserati Master Tech 17 years.
I love that colour (for US... color) of interior. Stunning. Thanks for the video. I only wish I had changed my “lifetime” transmission fluid on my BMW E38... instead of having spending a near fortune on fixing/replacing one. Great advice... 5 years too late. Thanks anyhow.
The gearbox is ZF 6HP26 and it calls for ZF Lifegueard 6 or 8 oil which is yellow. I see you put standard ATF oil in it, curious to see how it behave with it long term.
Radostin Velchev Even on power toys like ATVs I’ve seen the wrong oil do irreparable harm. I sense this poor ZF transmission running on the wrong oil won’t last long lol
that's a nice e320 wagon, i have the 1996 e320 sedan in the same color, paid $1200 and it has no issues and has 114k miles with bose sound system, great deal
People who speak badly of Maserati generally have never had one and do not know the car. They are great cars and, unlike what is believed, they are generally very reliable
@@josedealbuquerquejr.941 That's probably true, but this comment was more about Italian cars in general. There's no arguing they're amazing cars to own, but there's also no arguing that they're poorly built.
Great channel with great interaction from the 2 guys and lots great repair tips. Beautiful collection of cars and plenty of space to work on them. Great to see professional honest mechanics who know what their doing! You know just a simple transmission with 4 gears clutches and bands and a valve body and couple of sensors and mysteriously will go for 30 years without a single fault and only a couple of oil changes. My Jap 4 speed is that old and i still dont get any error codes which i read with a led light plugged in!! I also have a ultrasonic AFS so not hot wires getting contaminated and tripping a code and one computer for the whole car and yea 4 wheel disks! My distributor is a mechanical type with a hall sensor and works perfectly and i carry a spare igniter and pugs and leads in case the ignition system plays up- its controlled from the computer but the computer just keeps working . My car costs me nothing and its reliable and in its day comfortable to drive and still is. 1987 mitsub Magna from Australia. Seems every new car is in the garage with misc codes tripping from little glitches and yet lot of the time, the car drives ok. For mechanics its a gold mine but many a time they are frustrated finding these problems and swap stuff out only to charge the customer yet the problem is just in the wiring but lack of skills for these new "techs", they cant diagnose properly. Channels like South main auto in upstate New York find these glitches when others cant and of course The wizard is so good as he knows whats hes doing and has tons of patience for these cars. Transmission with life time fluid- Yeah!- change all your fluids and DONT flush. Little bit of maintenance can extend the life of any metal to metal component and all cars need servicing or they simple wont last.
The ZF fluid is actually a clearish amber color, yours really wasn't that bad. Still a good idea to be proactive on it and you should be fine using the maxlife atf. The standard syn atf has a bit lower viscosity than the zf spec stuff. If it meets LT71141 it will be fine
whats the gearbox code/type?I think u just put wrong oil in it..all the zf 5hp or 6hp gearboxes use yellow oil not the red one 🤔 the red one is for Multitronic, yellow for tiptronic
Great show but I don’t think any ZF transmission of that era was used in a Mercedes automobile. As far as I know the transmission in question is the ZF 6HP26 and was used on BMWs and Jaguar models. It should be durable though since it’s rated by the manufacturer for 600 Nm.
On the older Mercedes trans they usually need the speed sensor on the conductor plate, which is all 1 piece. (2 sensors built into the plate). The transmission computer plug that plugs into the transmission might have a little fluid in it, that could also be causing a failed connection.
Mr. Hoovie, Mr. Hoovie, in reference to the Wizard 13:19, "the beard of knowledge grows everyday", wow you made such an amazing statement. Congratulations !
Erm... There's a good reason why the fluid came out golden, rather than red - a lot of zf auto boxes don't use traditional red ATF, they use different fluid, that is a golden colour and traditional Dexron type ATF isn't compatible! Did you guys check this one specifically before ordering/filling it?
I'm pretty sure this will get buried but for ZF transmissions you HAVE to use genuine ZF fluid, if you use anything else like that Valvoline stuff the transmission won't be for long. Not that it matters anyways because hoovie will probably sell it in 2 months but still
How cool is it that you have a Car Wheeeeeeee-Zard as your best friend? You guys are hilarious. And the Maserati is pretty bad ass too. Another great episode.
Reminds me of when I changed the "sealed for life" fluid on my E36 BMW... Having to have the car running whilst I was underneath was not a nice experience! But hey, got over 250,000 miles from that car... And it wasn't the gearbox that finally condemned it as beyond economical repair!
Nah it was more like they ruined the legacy of the NSX with the new NSX and no one wanted to even look at it because of that. As the Lotus Evora 400 is far more of an NSX than the NSX now.
Always look forward to your videos very informative and entertaining. Hoping to see some updates on your new home and congratulations on your home and I do love that Maserati beautiful color
Yeah, it truly is unfortunate you got rid of your NSX it truly is one of my favorite cars the older and newer ones. Very surprising the videos didn't get as much good feedback.
I need a garage like wizard! I don't like working on "normal" cars as much. Been doing similar electronics repairs on my BMW. I love wiring, becoming a wizard of my own!
@@Azureecosse I'm not sure but the neon sign reminds me of the early 80s Electric Blue videos. I was just a young teenager using my dad's VHS video recorder!
If you tie a rag around your wrist it’ll keep fluid from running down your arm and messing up your members only jacket, or whatever it is your wearing.
Matchbox Garage uh. No. Lol. Want a fun relatively fast decent handling car? Mercedes c350 2014. 330HP. Handles decent, gets up and goes pretty good. And they are reliable. I’ve had one for 4 years and put 75 k miles on it. Had no issues. Period. Just basic maintenance.
@@fubarexress6359 Ohhh I see what you did there. Hate to burst the bubble but its 302Hp, nice smooth engine, somewhat reliable but not much torque. Ive got it in my 212 but nothing really exciting about it.
