When I was a kid in the '80's, about 15, I went with my father to his reinion on CV-10 in Charleston. Sine it was the reunion, the ship was closed to the public, but completely open to "us"; even spaces that were usually off- limits. There was a single-mount, unshielded 5" 38 in a sponson, which I naturally climbed down into. Had a blast for a few minutes elevating and transversing it; "bagged" a jetliner, a couple of ferry boats, and really "worked over" an SSN tied up at the naval base across the harbor! Was shocked at how easy it was for one person to operate the gun (absent loading and firing!), it moved incredibly smoothly. Great memory

Physically cutting cables seems dangerous unless they were removed or permanently isolated from the switchboards in which case it wouldn't be necessary . I did watch the Iowa turret videos which were excellent and there was a lot of work needed to prove the machinery which was in good condition . Docking and preserving the hull integrity seems a better use of money for the ships future however .
@ravenbarsrepairs5594
@ravenbarsrepairs5594 4 месяца назад
Has anyone seen the cut cables? I wonder if they simply disconnected the wires from a "breaker panel" or something of the like. If the Navy was serious about ever reactivating the Iowa's. which the contracts give them the option to take them back, so I would assume that's a potential plan, cutting the cables would be a massive PIA to repair. Missourri also became a museum while still technically in the mothball fleet due to Congress requiring one Iowa remain available for service, so I highly doubt they did irrepairable damage to that vessel before it became a museum, and going onto a museum to permanently alter the fabric of the vessel would also be highly frowned upon. I suspect this "cut cables" is another myth similar to the "the turrets are welded in place" myth that Ryan's already disproved.
@sparkplug1018
@sparkplug1018 4 месяца назад
I would have to assume that they were disconnected from their source, rather then physically cut. Ryan did a video going through the catacombs of the ship a long time ago, and ends up literally under I believe turret 2 where you can see the massive power wires going up into the center of it. He explained along the way that at least some of the armored cable that runs through the space is what feeds the turrets as it was the easiest way to run cable that thick. It has been a while since I saw the video, but from where he entered from forward diesel (I believe) to where they ended, under the turret I didn't notice any obvious breaks in those cables. Similarly I didn't notice any obvious breaks when Iowa's curator made the same video. Edit: went back and watched the video again, at 3:15 where he is about to enter the catacombs from forward diesel there's what looks like a pretty beefy disconnected cable to the left of the hatch. Wondering if that was the power feed to turret 2?

Something interesting from WWII is that the Norden bomb sight computer worked better in flight than during static tests. The reason is dither; vibrations of a moving thing can reduce friction from static to dynamic adhesion which halves the force required to move things. The reason half the bolts fall of Harley Davidson motorcycles. Probably just a factoid but something to be aware of.

I one of the previous videos as I recall, Ryan mentioned that it was an issue getting 440 volt power from the shore was the reason why the 16 inch guns could not be rotated. In this video he says the Navy permanently removed the 440 volt wiring as part the demilitarizing process.
@andrewj9831
@andrewj9831 4 месяца назад
Getting 440 isn't the issue...it's getting the 440 along with the amps needed to move them in active ship use. They could just decrease volt/amps to move them....just not as fast as in "active" duty. So in theory if it took 440V at 200 Amps for a 100HP motor to move the guns at 10 feet per min... 220V at 100amps for 50HP motor might be 2 ft per min.... What the navy basically did was "remove" the electrical wires from the electric pole (Ships power supply) to the house (Gun).... So an extension cord or generator right to the gun. However I seen too many times (industrial factory) where they just cut 2 feet of the wire harness off, and left the remaining.

Because in reality it's "welded in place" by a 2" weld.. Which makes sense.. These *were* intended to be easily reactivated after all!! Why would the navy actively try and destroy ships they had intended to one day use, again. Despite the fact that's likely to never actually happen.. it *could* ... Is it true that it is the massive weight of the main gun turrets that hold them in place? I have read that some battleships when sunk and they capsized the main gun turrets fell out.

There are locks that keep them from falling out on this ship, but some ship did not have that.

@joeythedime1838 4 месяца назад
Yes, it's interesting. That means NJ was decommissioned differently than Iowa since NJ's turret power lines were cut by the Navy and Iowa's were not.
@jacksons1010
@jacksons1010 4 месяца назад
@@joeythedime1838 _New Jersey_ and _Missouri_ were disposed of by the USN to be museum ships, while _Wisconsin_ and _Iowa_ were retained for some time in reserve. _Iowa_ was the last to be removed from the USN inventory and it does seem that the ship was not "demilitarized" to the extent that _New Jersey_ was.

As a museum the USS New Jersey Museum and Memorial are exempt from oversight by the ATF for the many "Destructive Devices" that are a part of the ship. Same with any landlocked museum. Our local WWII Museum has an unregistered Japanese Type 99 machine gun which was brought back as a war trophy, illegally, by a soldier and a couple of buddies by stuffing the different parts into their duffle bags when they returned home. ATF got wind of that one and had a "discussion" with the elderly veteran about how him having it was illegal and something had to be done with it. It was decided after the County Sheriff got involved that it would be stored at the Sheriff's office and the old vet could visit it when he wanted and when he passed ATF would take possession and destroy it. In between that time and when he passed, a lawyer got involved and it was donated by the vet to the museum in his will. That took the ATF out of the loop as it went from 1 exempt entity, the Sheriff, to another, the Museum. This was the ATF of 20 years ago, today they'd probably kick in the old man's door, shoot his dog and take the machine gun without a second thought. The way I heard it, when the ATF told him they were taking it he said, "I killed 5 men to get that gun, you don't want to know how many I will kill to keep it".

It is so sad that some people would actually ask this question. Simimarly, asking about if the ship will be under her own power. No and no. Common sense is becomming less and less common.

Why did they take the power cables from USS New Jersey and not USS Iowa? Did they want a spare set and New Jersey just had to have the harness that was in the best condition or did the Navy know and suspect that she was going to be birthed in New Jersey and it's something to comply with New Jersey's insanely strict gun laws. Also how did the museum get too legally be able to restore the 5-in and 40 mm guns to firing condition? In the US firearms with a bore over one half inch and without a valid sporting purposes are considered a destructive device under the national firearms act of 1934 same law that governs machine guns silencers etc and also the state of New Jersey does not allow private possession of any NFA firearms. Where the guns modified in a way so that they can only fire a blank and are physically incapable of firing live ammo or does the museum also have and FFL / SOT allowing them to possess destructive devices?
@coolsnake1134
@coolsnake1134 4 месяца назад
Or are museums exempt from all the provisions of the national firearms act and the Hughes amendment? Meaning they don't have to deal with things like transferable versus dealer sample, tax stamps registration waiting 8 months for the ATF to do their part etc

Ryan probably knows the correct answers to this. I think the main limitation the USS New Jersey and Memorial if any of her guns fired again. There are no more replacement barrels anymore. And the barrels can only be fired so many times before replacement.
