I've had my iPad 4 for almost 3 years and I intend to keep it until it stops working. I'm surprised how smooth its working. With phones I buy them outright and sell them at a loss, but I enjoy the new experience of the phones. You can definitely keep a smartphone for more than 3 years and it'll still work fine, but now a days that's kind of difficult because of the battery life span the new devices have.
I kept my iPad 2 for 4 and a half years and still use my iPhone 4. I just keep my electronics in very good shape. So, yes. They already last for me as much as a pc. iPad 2 was retired because I received a mini as a gift for Christmas. Otherwise, I would kept it going for at least one more year.
I hope they will. It's so frustrating to me, to see that my Moto g1 is still in very good shape under it's protection layers (even the battery), but the last security update was a year ago, so I guess the door to all my data stands wide open for "visitors". I would be more than willing to pay for softwareupdates, to not have throw it away (resources are a limited thing), although the hardware still works perfectly fine. Even with old desktop hardware, Linux for example shows that you don't need the newest fancy stuff, but can still run a (for surfing, writing, streaming and stuff like that) perfectly fine functioning OS on ten years old hardware. I guess I will look for a Cyanogen Mod or stuff like that to keep my smartphone running a few years longer, as it is only four years young now, and I don't feel it has done it's duty now. I don't think our planets biggest problem is a lack of waste... :'( I hope this madness of smartphones with a planned lifespan of max. 3 years will come to an end soon. Were still fucking up the resources for future generations fast enough then, for almost no real benefit.
cellphones now days are built like cars. After a few years or something goes wrong. a cellphone is a "throw away item" aftet a year or too. they get slow and out date or damaged and its cheaper to get a new onedepending on the phone. me personally a new cell phone every one to two years.
