Will the public embrace "The Embrace"?

A 22-foot-tall bronze sculpture of arms hugging, inspired by a photograph of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, was unveiled at Boston Common on January 13. But some of the reactions - from the public, comedians, and social media - have been harsh. Correspondent Nancy Giles talks with sculptor Hank Willis Thomas about the response to his public art honoring love.

The designers totally disregarding criticism because it came from the internet. Well gentlemen, the truth hurts. If I were local I'd swing by the office and tell you that it's a shame in person. I get the idea of the monument, but we could've honored Dr. King a little more than this.

Nothings going to change, I don’t like it. The human face is _THE_ touchstone for a sculpture honoring someone. Without it the sculpture seems incomplete in some essential way.

I think the problem is that it looks fantastic from the angle or spot that you’re supposed to be viewing it from (like the photo)… but if you’re viewing it from the other 270 degrees of angle it just looks bizarre

I wouldn't go so far as to call it "pornographic". That word implies the concept is intentional. It was definitely not his intention. I don't see that so much as looking like a section of a large intestine. Or the contents thereof.

There is no reality where the artist did not see the phallus in the mock-ups. Letting it go to bronze was unequivocally intentional. But that is okay. It says something that makes people think. It doesn’t have to be serious or reverent. That is art. But CBS - really, why even talk about it if you are afraid to speak plainly? How do you expect blind persons to interpret the story? It is 2023 - we can say anatomical terms without giggling.

I don't like it as a larger than life sculpture because it is difficult to see, therefore leading to being misinterpreted. The DC monument looks unfinished. But people also hate the FDR monument. I hate the puffy hearts around San Francisco. Art isn't for everyone. But if you have to explain it at length, then the art is missing the intent.

If it had included the back of two heads ducked down into the shoulders/arms, then maybe it would look more normal. Thinking the sculpture is weird is not a racist thing. People react to modern art, and that isn't a matter of race.

I feel that he should have just a simple statue of the actual couple hugging. Not many people know about Mrs. Coretta and we have seen many statues of Dr. King. If the private donors gave money for art to represent the couple then they should have represented the couple and not the general public embracing. plus no one is really embracing strangers nowadays due to Covid
@chrisfinch8637

In the past, up to today, people have had certain doubts or confusions about certain art that they see, or that is trending in the world, currently. While it is normal for people to share their own opinions about what they see and say, about art or anything/anyone in general, it is very vital that they remain cautious about how they share them, so it doesn’t cause a stir or cause any trouble among other people or groups. This particular MLK/CSK statue might have been confusing or difficult to understand at first, but it is there to show one purpose- to “Embrace” the power of love, and the courage to come together, as brothers and sisters, no matter the color of their skin, just like what his dream was, nearly 60 years ago.

I'm sorry, but I honestly don't like it. It's too abstract and too pretentious. Frankly, seeing these guys 'pooh-poohing' criticisms reminds me of some art critic with his nose in the air, scoffing at all the 'Philistines' who can't perceive the 'deeper meaning' of a paint splatter on a canvas. Everybody wants this statue to be completed since it looked unfinished without the head and torso but honestly, this look great. Why? Cause it's different. It's unique. It's not like any other statues that critics wanted it to be. In all fairness, there are other statues all over the world that even I don't know what they represent. - Like the St. Louis Arch: what the heck is that built for and what does it mean? - The Silver Bean in Chicago: what kind of bean? Jellybean? - and oh, here's another one, Mount Rushmore National Memorial: we know the four presidents but...why does it look unfinished? So there you go, as the comedian says, we might get to like it someday. Maybe not now but who knows..

Unfortunately, like most confederate statues, this one will be removed by public demand, albeit for different reasons, and be moved inside to adorn the interior of a civil rights or history-related museum in Boston. I think the sculptor sees the error of his decision now. I would like for him to have a chance to design another sculpture, but I know that procuring the same level of funding would be difficult. This is certainly the trial and tribulation of a young sculptor's journey. It no doubt has been a huge education for him. I can definitely see him taking on the personal goal of creating a replacement statue that will be perceived as inspirational. Hopefully, one that would ultimately grace that same location for many generations.

Can Humans be Tamed? We need to develop ourselves as human beings beyond our animate level of existence, and it is possible with a certain kind of education. Developing ourselves as human beings means learning and balancing ourselves with the integral laws of nature operating on our lives. If we learn how to positively connect among each other in human society, with altruistic attitudes replacing our current egoistic attitudes, we then develop ourselves beyond the animate level of existence and become human beings in the fullest sense of the term. First, we need to provide for our animate lives, giving our physical bodies the food, sex and family that they require, then after taking care of those essentials, we can begin our human development. We then need to learn who and what we are, where we are from, why we exist, how we can develop ourselves, how we can control our human development, what our attitude to our surrounding society should be, what society’s attitude should be toward us, and how we can develop together harmoniously, i.e. us in relation to society, and society in relation to us. We need to supply ourselves with this development that will make us human beings. Unfortunately, I see nobody understanding what it means to develop a human being, and we thus fail to realize such a process. One of the outcomes of our lack of development into human beings is our inability to understand the younger generation. We become increasingly detached from them, and do not know what will happen with them or how to guide them in a beneficial direction. We thus let life unfold as it does, into a proliferation of problems and crises. Very simply, we need to learn what nature wants from us, and to develop in order to balance with nature’s demands toward us. If we meet those demands, we can then build a harmonious and peaceful world, one that is in balance with nature.
