I remember discovering this beer in the early 90s. In the dark days of American beers, this was so incredibly better than any American beers then. It tasted so dark, complex and unique. Nowdays, the American beer market has exploded with a million options, but I think a classic like this still has a place….like Trappist Ales. Cheers!
The classics are classics for a reason after all! And I ready recently that US exports of Old Peculier have once again started, so hopefully you'll see it again soon! Cheers!
They stopped shipping it to the US a while ago, however they said two months ago that they were resuming export to the US so you should hopefully start to see it soon!
Old Peculier is an old favorite, but unfortunately, it's tough to find over here, still, it's terrific stuff and a nostalgic part of the "Second Phase" of my Brit beer journey - which occurred many, many, many years ago.
Funny you should say that, I was at Tan Hill last weekend! And yes the Old Peculier in there was 10/10! Video of that little venture coming soon(ish). Cheers!
I love Black sheep and Theakston beers, The recent trend for hazy IPA’s and Beers with American hops baffles me, when you can get great beers from these wonderful Breweries, with English hops….good balance of malt with hop flavours, amber, red, brown coloured, full of flavour, with a lovely dry finish…..the poor uneducated…..what are they missing?
It's a funny old world isn't it. The irony is of course, the heavily-hopped craft beer era start as a result of people being bored by generic lager and fuggy bitters, which is understandable. But now, the majority of easily available pales and IPAs are clones of clones of clones.
After I made this video I have been lucky enough to try this from a wooden cask from the only two pubs in the UK that serve it in that way (regular cask is fairly widely available) - I have to say it is simply INCREDIBLE in that format. It also helps that one of those locations is the brewery tap itself, and the other is also not too far away from it.
Having been drinking a lot of Belgium Dubbel and Germany Dunkel, I turned to this! It's quite a harsh tasting beer, I did wonder how the brewing style equated to the other two styles!? I must admit I'm ststruggling to enjoy it!
I must admit, it is very very inconsistent. The stuff you can get out of a wooden cask in a few select pubs in Yorkshire vs a badly stored supermarket bottle are leagues apart! It's an annoying one because when it's good, it's obscene, but so often it can come up short. Cheers!
Haha to be fair I did a video about that specifically when it first came out about a year ago but it didn’t get much interest so I thought I’d re-feature it 😆
