It can't ever suddenly seem like you were never in the EEC then the EU over the last 46 years. You can't say (i.e. think) how much better off you would be right now and then 11pm on 29th March 2019 if you were never in them, and think you would suddenly be as well off per 11pm on 29th March 2019 at some point in the future if you never were in them. The UK after 29th March 2019 after it leaves it will never suddenly be as well off or anything near as they think they would have been had they never joined the EEC back in 1973. And UK will be worse off after leaving the EU than by remaning in it.

Yep. A Judge from the General Court of the European Union is definitely qualified to speak on this matter. Though, I would argue that many sovereign countries manage on a bilateral level, some more prosperous than the UK. Though complicated(Note: all international relations are complicated) standards, equivalence, etc, in medicine, food, agriculture, science, aviation, etc, etc exist outside organisations like the EU. I would argue that doing it by half would be the most damaging outcome.

I don't think Zealotry is the right answer here. Just like claiming complicated things are just representations of something simple seems kind of unlikely. Just because there are similarities does not mean it's the same. There is a reason many modern states are considered to have socialist policies, yet use an capitalist economic system and a democratic system of governance. It's because each have features that are considered useful to combine with the others. And calling it subjugation seems like a twisting of the actual reality. The Precursor to the EU was set up by the US. They convinced Germany and France to form an alliance with the hope they would stop fighting each other.

I agree, Britain was always the slayer of Empires! The next one to fall will be the EU Empire, the British Empire failed because it fought 2 world wars when the world was in denial. When the US and Chinese Empires of today have to put their resources into a prolonged conflict, the EU will have to decide which side or not it will support. Dithering EU technocrats will inevitably lead to the downfall of the EU Empire as they will neither side with Russia or the US..... so bring it on!

The tragedy is that people had no idea whatsoever what the consequences of leaving would (will) be and also had no idea how sovereign each member state in the EU is. Listening to Theresa May and Boris Johnson is horrifying. It very much shows that the UK won’t be able to produce a proposal that would be acceptable to the 27 EU member states and to the UK parliament. again this argument with Switzerland or Norway: they have to maintain freedom of movement and pay a huge sums into the EU budget without having the right to shape along. If that would be the result of Brexit that would be the stupidest thing Britain could do: you would have the same obligations, same costs (or even higher) with less rights. Remember that the UK as of now have a lot of exceptional regulations as an EU member....

Austen J Norway just has to pay and obey. For Switzerland it’s a bit more complicated resulting in all kinds of customs difficulties. Did you know that any member state can extradite any foreign EU person that costs money? The UK doesn’t do so but it would be perfectly legal under EU regulations.

Norway is part of EEA and they are using some of the EU directives and regulations. I would assume it depends on their agreement with EU due to EEA as to what specifically needs to be accepted from EU. Norway is also part of schengen so free movement in general applies. There is a wikipedia page on 'Norway-European_Union_relations' which has some statistics from 2010 (70% of EU directives and 17% of EU regulations in force).

Eduard van Raalte In relation to your second paragraph, what is your source? EU directives say that after being resident 5 years in an EU country you have every right to stay but this is being ignored by France who are using economic measures to decide who stays or leaves.

why would you like to hear about Norway etc? they have to adopt free movement, so there is no comparison as the uk does not want to adopt it.

ian forde A no deal Brexit means that every EU treaty will cease to exist for the UK. For example UK pilots won’t have a license to fly into ANY international air space. And the UK won’t even have an internationally recognized certification body to license any pilot. The same goes for the planes. Just 1 example... This is not project fear. This is just a very inconvenient practicality. The U.K. will need time to negotiate new treaties not only with the EU but also with the rest of the world. A ‘simple’ treaty will take at least 4 years. The more complex ones take 8 or 10 years. The current UK negotiators are under staffed, under payed and under qualified. Good luck if you want to negotiate all treaties with the EU and with every single other country that are currently covered by EU treaties. Meanwhile May and Johnson are quarreling about proposals that will never be accepted by the EU. A no deal Brexit going to be a loss for the EU but a disaster for the UK. No, the tariffs are for all countries. The only way to put different tariffs on different countries is to make trade deal. That's why when the brexitters say "if the EU put tariffs on uk, we will put tariffs on them" is stupid. First because the EU won't put tariffs on uk, the tariffs will be the tariffs of third country which the uk will be. Second the tariff you put on butter will be available for every country in the wto.

I still buy bent cucumbers so that news is ridiculous. It was a regulation that merely sought to encompass standards applied to supermarket shelves. It was quickly changed when a furore arose to highlight the ridiculousness of it. The British media nit picked this information to death as they probably didn’t have anything or anyone else to have a go at at the time. What I’m more concerned about is any prospective trade deal with the USA that may allow gmo products to enter our country without them being labelled on any packaging. Or for that matter, substandard food from countries that we have to agree basic terms with on the wto rules. That and other products that may be of a substandard quality. Not entirely up on the rules for wto yet as I’m so busy reading the ‘deal’ agreement and other matters. The cucumber and banana story is misguided - the regulation, or rather classification, came from the UN's FAO in order to make exports from Africa easier, as there are several hundred types of bananas in Africa, not only what we would call a banana. These descriptions were for the ease of it sent to the EU, which made implementation a lot easier. It was NOT an EU idea ;)

Austen J The article 50 process doesn’t need to be revoked unilaterally. The 27 states would gladly welcome the revocation. Maybe the UK would loose it’s contribution discount but that would be all.

@@Conservator. The article 50 process cannot be revoked either unilaterally or with universal consent according to the text of Art 50. The Art 50 process can only be extended with universal consent, but not revoked/reversed. I find it quite extraordinary that the Scottish Court of Session didn't just throw out the claim brought by pro-Remainers and can only explain it rationally as showing a potentially biased Scottish court.

It is not to much dificult export from eu to the rest of the world since eu standards are normally higher then the rest of the world. But export from south america or even usa to eu can be a problem especially because of food standards. Most of that laws are standards wich you want apply anyway or recomendations that you decide if you want or not. EU have more democracy than UK, UK have an unlected second chamber and is not equal represented in fact this two aspects are enough to stop a country from being admited in the EU. EU parlament is elected by vote (you vote in your country for eu elections), the comission is indirect since is elected by the parlament and the council being this last one all PM from all countries... so in the end all is democratic since the decisions come from people you vote for. You can say you didn't vote for the french pm, but he is there to defend france and eu like uk pm is there to defend uk and eu or was. That is how the alliance works, if you want to vote for everything then eu needs to evolve to a federation but that also removes the sovereign of the countries (and they are sovereign even UK writes that on the white paper "...uk have always been sovereign even if didn't always look like that..." Also remember that UK will adopt foreign policies when doing deals, is the base of them... and they will adopt a lot more than they would have by not being a member of the EU, since EU is a lot more powerfull than UK they can do better deals. Have you seen UK-US blueprint, in that blueprint UK adopts most of US standards and some policies.... Sovereign comes from power in this global world and if you try to isolate yourself or you're big as a continent like USA or China or there will be a lot of consequences to your people and your country biggest ex. is north korea... so you need to deal with the world and in this world power is the key, in fact was one of the reasons eu was made... to makre europe still relevant in this world do to the threat of USA and URSS.... now there is three sharks USA, EU and China, Russia is not that powerfull but they still do a lot of games...
