It's been nearly five years since Italian student Giulio Regeni was tortured and killed in Egypt.
New videos obtained by Al Jazeera suggest security services followed the 28-year old for more than a month before he disappeared.
Italian prosecutors, frustrated by a lack of cooperation from Egypt, have charged four Egyptian agents with kidnapping and murder.
Egypt has since suspended its own probe.
So what are the broader implications of this case?

Finally, there is some headway in this case. I was horrified when I first heard about it; the kidnapping, torture and murder of foreign graduate student Gulio Regeni, in Egypt. For the record, I am equally concerned about the over 1000 deaths in custody in Egypt but I don't know the details of those cases. I agree with Ahmed McFreh and Dalis Fahmy that this is business as usual in Egypt and that there is a total lack of transparency. What is even more awful is that governments, Italy included, are more concerned with the bottom line, selling arms etc than with gross, human rights abuses. Fahmy says that the Magnitsky Act holds some promise for punishing human rights offenders and a hope that she is right. It seems to be a very dark time in Egypt with most governments looking the other way and giving them a pass for strategic reasons.

What a horrible place the earth has become. Any entity using torture must be disbanded and held accountable. Only then justice will prevail on earth.

As an Italian I have to say that Italy is a joke. One of our young citizens got tortured and slaughtered for no reason by a foreign gov and the only rightful reaction should have been to cut all diplomatic and economic ties with that country. Shame.

I can't believe this story is about an Italian citizen. all my solidarity with the thousands of people imprisoned in Arab countries for pure discrimination not important such as but which concerns the freedom of thought, movement or sexual orientation. Shame!! we are in 2021 not in the 14th century.,

If the el sisi's son was involved I'm 100% positive it was honor killing , the victim might have been involved with a female member from el sisi's family , why would they go to such extreme measures to cover it .and the amount of torture its obvious it was personal .
