Really enjoyed the video. I love the plane and the engine. I'm flying 37 years and nearly all my planes are equipped with fourstroke engines. They've always been my favourite. You flew the Ultra stick superbly. Well done.

Thank you sir. Yes, 4 strokes are awesome!

Nothing like some nice prop rip on a beautiful day... especially with some twin cylinder noises to go with it!

really enjoyed watching that….you just took me back 52 years. Well not the flying - I was never that good, just nice to see young guys having fun flying model aeroplanes and I like how you involve your brothers as well. Great keep it up. And yes that engine did sound good especially with the prop tips going supersonic!

I loved that older model US 120. Flew one with a Super Tiger 3000 later changed to a Zenoh G26. The g26 was heavy and not a lot of power. Father in law crashed it and replaced it with a Jerry's Big Boy. It flys with a 1.10 YS turning a 17X6 APC and has better low speed than the Ultra Stick.

Nice plane! Love the ultra stick, mine has an old OS Max .61 and she flies sweet! I really want to put a four stroke on it, they do sound really nice.

The four stroke twin sounds great. The Master Airscrew prop is good for fields where it’s likely to be hitting grass, weeds or dirt but not the best for performance. An APC will wake it up although I wouldn’t have expected an increase in performance. The 30cc gas engine you went to is a much better match. My same sized Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick had a heavy, low power 40cc single cylinder engine on it when I bought it. I replaced it with an EME 35 and it has unlimited vertical now.

NIce! I have a Great Planes Big Giant Stik with a Saito FA180 on it but have been debating moving it to electric using a Power 180 I happened into. Its really my only gasser left and 10s-12s sounds fun....

Seems like that would be a good candidate for onboard glow power.

Nice! Put an onboard glow driver and you won't ever have to worry about a flame out and you can get some really sweet idle RPM's

@Airsally
@Airsally Год назад

@funfreq9282
@funfreq9282 Год назад
@@flyinghighjoe One other thing to consider! The amount of weight and power you have already added to the stick the glow system would be insignificant in comparison. I have a Great Planes cub 60 that I stuffed one of these engines into and I have the onboard glow system. Given the wing area and power gains it really isn't a problem.

I use glow systems on my bigger planes, I use a micro switch to activate it from idle to 1/4 throttle.
@thatairplaneguy
@thatairplaneguy Месяц назад
That engine is intended to run with an onboard glow so both cylinders have constant plug voltage. That insures one cylinder doesn’t die. Running it on one can hydrolock the other and we all know what that would do.

I have the 120twin in my 1/4cub, these engines have a tendency to drop a cylinder, get yourself two rcxel onboard glows & run them through a switch on the radio. Haven’t had an engine out since doing this

You will need an RCEXL Twin Cylinder Universal Luminous Driver. It can provide ignition to the spark plug manually or via remote control. It will make the engine work sweetly.

I had the same airplane, but w a DLE 30cc. Your twin sounds great and makes the plane fly very well. A DLE will have more torque, and will need a bigger prop. I had to bend the legs inward to clear the prop from the ground, it pulled to the heavens.
@flyinghighjoe

I’m thinking of swapping the twin for a gas engine. Not sure if I wanna go for a Zenoah G 26 or G38. Thanks for the landing gear tip. I’ll have to do that.

A larger prop diameter will have a faster tip speed compared to a smaller prop diameter rotating at the same rpm. Higher tip speed = more prop noise.

Phil Kraft designed the first Ugly Stik in the 1960s. Countless variants have followed.
@rigididiot

If you keep it running like that (8200 RPM on the ground, while hoilding full throttle in a dive) it will exceed 9K in the air on a regular basis and you'll break a conrod. These are not aerobatic engines, not designed for hotrodding. My advise is to prop it a bit heavier, and also: get a CDI ignition system (CH, or RcExl).

I’m swapping it for a DLE 30 now😁. The O.S. 160 runs good and sounds amazing but it still doesn’t have the power I’m looking for.
@rigididiot
@rigididiot Год назад
@@flyinghighjoe Well, it never was an engine designed for THAT... (all out power, I mean). Mine does about 2,4 bhp @7600 RPM, burning gasoline, not Methanol. A DLE 30 most definitely will exceed that 2,4 hp, but not by all that much. But they sound like crap. I saw you stated earlier that yours only produced 2 hp, then most definitely something is wrong with it: On glow fuel, these things should touch 3 hp.
@flyinghighjoe
@flyinghighjoe Год назад
I bought the O.S. 160 without knowing much about. I found it on Marketplace for a good price so I went ahead and bought it expecting to fly with it a few times then ultimately move on to a gas engine. Research shows the OS 160 will put out 2hp at 10,000 while the DLE 30 produces 3.7 hp at 8500 rpm. I’m not too concerned that the DLE 30 won’t have enough power
@rigididiot
@rigididiot Год назад
@@flyinghighjoe Those numbers are incorrect, in fact that engine will self-destruct if operated at 10K, and it produces its peak power (which on methanol really is around 3 hp) at about 8K I know because mine does about 2,4 hp @ 7700, burning gasoline. Methanol produces approximately 25% more power than gasoline. Being an engineer and having measured myself, I am pretty sure of those numbers. If you have access to a propcalculator, run the numbers yourself: My prop is an APC 18 x 6 Wideblade, and it peaks on the ground at 7700 RPM. The folks I know that have one running methanol, typically use an 18 x 8 Menz or Master, getting comparable RPM. Heck, mine is not even the OS, but the cheap chinese ASP copy.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LiHrZVrOGwY.html I get well over 10 lbs of thrust with that thing, and I use it for glider towing... Which is a power-sports...

I don’t know which model of the Ultra Stick this is, probably the 120. If so, AND you want to make it perform and sound cool, just run a YS big block, from a 140 and up. You can find 140’s all over for not much cash. Personally, I’d put a damn DLE20 on it and enjoy the fuel savings. If it’s a current 10cc model, put a 75 or 90 size glow 2c. It will make it as crazy as it needs.
@flyinghighjoe

Just an obvious comment, what was the weight difference between the old and new motor, i guess the new OS may have been heavier, did you check the CG ?. If heaver would count for the nose down attitude. What was the HP rating of the new motor compared to the old motor ?.
@flyinghighjoe
@flyinghighjoe Год назад
Good question. The Saito 150S weighs 31.3 oz w/out muffler and produces 2.5 hp while the O.S. 160 Gemini weighs 38.8 oz and only produces 2 hp. Now these are manufacturers specs but they are very comparable engines. I did not do more flight testing since recording this video but I’m really curious what the performance difference is between the old and new engine when using the same 16x8 prop. Also I had a good chunk of lead under the nose with the 150 and that weight is now all engine. The plane balances abt 1/2 inch behind the spar which got me thinking it would be a little tail heavy but apparently cg should be even further back.

I have a vintage yellow Ultrastick .60 that has been e-converted from a Saito 125 to a 2200+ watt electric motor. It does an easy 105 mph, as measured using a calibrated GPS unit. Sticks are great planes that can fly slow or fast. Without the motor sound, you can to easily hear the very distinctive whistle sound from the wings .
