I've done a bit of research here in Canada as I'm unable to find CitraSolv here. Amazon lists degeasers with d-limonene in them which may be an option. You can also get d-limonone to mix with water or vinegar to make your own degreaser, but it's not cheap in this form either. Local cleaning chemical stores may have d-limonene in your area. Something to consider. My local thrift store has stacks of NatGeos for pennies yet not one drop of CitraSolv to be found! I'm determined to find a solution (pardon the pun).
Fantastic! Pls let me know when you do 👍🏼 because I get asked all the time! I have not yet found an alternative to citrasolve but it must be out there! Cheers Froyle
Also in Canada- there is a product in our local pet shop that works like Citrasolve. It's for cleaning up pet mistakes. Unfortunately I don't remember what it is called. It's not a usual name. Perhaps some one knows it.
I think the foam will put too much air(and maybe other components) in the mix, and not a lot of the d-limonene will actually contact the ink layer on the page.the pages may also have a separate coating to get through before the ink print layer. Maybe one could spray the foam in a dish, and see if it settles to a liquid, and paint that on!
I was going to say the same. The Geographics had to be predating a certain date because the printing process changed. Wish I could remember what the date was. The original RU-vidr who demoed this did state that. However, I can't remember who that was either!! Sorry, too many silver moments! 😀
Froyle, your laughter is infectious! You're cracking me up! Fantastically informative videos. I'm an art teacher who loves printmaking n collage and you are one of my before bedtime favorites to watch. Thanks for the smiles.
Bahahahaha! Sausage sizzle is where there is a pop up BBQ cooking sausages & putting them on bread with onions & sauce! Right out the front of Bunnings! It smells amazing & cost $2 raising money for a charity! It’s a classic! 👍🏼🤣
We finally tried our project with national geographic and limonene. We were outside and masked - very powerful chemical. Wonderful results. Really fun. Much like the Gelli printing - I do my part, some kind of wonderful mystery happens, and I receive the gift of beauty - both pulling off the plate and opening the magazine pages at just the right time. Thank you for your encouragement 🙏
Just a tip. I was told that it may be the year of the National Geo that makes a difference, not the product. I personally used 1950’s ..no luck. Try the 1990’s -around 2012 that worked. I was told it’s the inks are different in the later issues.
@@FroyleArt Morning. I sprayed the solution on a warm Club Marine magazine, high gloss similar to a Nat Geo, not promising at all. There are still a few more solvents in the shed to try. The NZ hedge trimmers use a solvent for cleaning sap from their windscreens, it was great for the base of sauce pans.. I tried to buy in Oz but only a diluted version was available. I’ll see if I can find the name of it. In the meantime I’ll see what the shed reveals. Cheers Cher
That is the reason I don't follow you, because in your opinion people only exist in the USA , autralia o new zeland. Well, that is good. On the other hand, you are rolling on money that you could not care less. we were wondering why this person laughs so much.... of course all the money you make thanks to the internet.
I don't know if you still read these comments but here in the U.S. WD40 comes with a tiny straw that you place in the spray hole so that you can direct it better.
Maybe the magazines? What date are they? What temperature is it where you live? I fine the cold weather affects the outcome. It doesn’t work as good, you need the warmth. Cheers Froyle
D-Limonene is the oil from citrus, and that got me thinking what about orange or lemon or lime essential oils. You can’t get more concentrated than 100% pure essential oils. I would love to test it unfortunately I also don’t have national geographic magazine but maybe someone could give it a try. Love your video’s
@@FroyleArt I also immediately thought of essential oils. Maybe it depends on the strength/dilution of the oil? Maybe try a pure oil like Young Living or similar.
Thank you very much. I appreciate your generosity! I can get the citrisolve, just hard to find National Geographics magazines even at second hand stores. I'll keep searching!
@@barbaracabrera207 me too - I was quite impressed how Froyle managed them without getting a hair out of place! Me, I just put my dress on in the morning and looking like I've gone backwards through a haystack, and that's after it was all beautifully style!
I was in a mood today and wondered what I could watch that might cheer me. Then I thought, “watch some FroyleArt videos!” It did the trick. Watching you experiment, hearing you laugh, seeing the enjoyment you get from making lemonade from limonene 😉, it always cheers me up! tfs your time & talents
You frequently make me laugh, but you had me belly-laughing on this one when you got cracked up over the foam overspray. SO FUNNY!!! 🤣🤣 Bummer that the product didn't work, but thanks for sharing with us. Hope you have a wonderful week!
Hello Froyle. Do you think I can use industrial limonene instead of citrusolve? Maybe I’d need to dilute it? Thanks. Your videos are fun, and your art is wild!
Thanks from a fellow Kiwi. I was going to try doing this with desolvit then found your video. It's good to know it doesn't work before I waste money on buying it and ruin the magazines for nothing. This is the first time i.have seen your channel. It's great to have a creator who knows what is and isn't available in NZ. I will subscribe. ❤
Thank you for testing this out for us! Too bad about the WD40 because everyone in the US has that in their garages! Oh well, not everything works out so we’ll just need to get the other stuff!! Since we wouldn’t have even known about the citrasol without you, we are still better off because of you and Thank you for your freebies!! You are a doll!!💕
Have you ever tried putting a 2nd layer of CitraSolv on pages that didn’t work out quite as you wanted? I’ve saved some pages for a repeat application, thinking I may not have originally used enough of the product. Which makes me wonder what would happen if you put CitriSolv over the disappointing WD-40 pages: might you get the results you were hoping for? Inquiring minds want to know!
Haha! Well the problem with this week was that the citrasolve didn't dry properly. So I don't think adding any more degreaser to those pages will not work. But next week I am experimenting with what to do with dull & boring pages, hope you join me! Cheers Froyle
Thank you so much for sharing your papers with us. I really appreciate it. Maybe someday I’ll able to find someone with a hoard of the magazines. After seeing your first video I was brave and asked my dentists office if I could buy a couple. The answer was no-I was so proud that I tried though! ☺️
Oh your dentist is mean! So what about thrift shops? I just picked up a couple from a website here in NZ called Trade Me, people selling their second hand stuff, anything like that where you are? Cheers Froyle
Hi Froyle, I'm in Sth Australia, I've used Oomph, it works amazingly. 😁 I bought some nat geo mags today and I've just done some pages. I wish I could post a photo to show you. You can buy it from Coles or Woolworth. 🤗
I’m a Kiwi but in Oz for the next three weeks. I’ve just tried to find Oomph on the Cole’s and Woolworths websites but it’s not listed. Do you remember which supermarket you bought yours from please?
I've noticed that this works best with old Nat Geos. Didn't work well with current ones but worked really well with older ones 1960s 1970s. Has anyone else noticed this?
Thanks for trying, Froyle. I’m in Canada and we have the same problem with the staggering cost of shipping the Citrosol up from the US. It’s ridiculous because we’re next door neighbors so the cost shouldn’t be that much!☹️
Thanks for doing the test and sharing. I've used Citrosolve in the past and had fabulous outcomes, lots of variety. I don't believe it was the concentrate and it was a spray, but not foamy. I sprayed one side of the spread and then folded the other down, so less per page. I only used the colorful pages though and just love them all. You've inspired me to make some more, even though I have some left and copies too. Amazing to see what comes out.
Hi Froyle, I have used citrasolv on two NG so far and neither of them worked. They were both from 1990, do you use old ones or more recent ones. I don’t know if I should keep working through my pile or maybe wait till summer and see if that makes a difference🤣🤣 Thanks for sharing 🌺
I understand that the year of the print makes all the difference. This just may have to do with the Citrasolve concentration. The stronger concentration should work on the newer editions.
I've tried Citrasolv concentrate on 3 Nat Geo Mags and no results yet. My Citrasolv results are the same as the WD here. Not sure what I'm not doing right.
Make sure it’s the concentrate citrasolve. Do you brush it on or spray it? What about temperature? This week was just too cold & it didn’t dry properly, it’s so annoying when it doesn’t work! Cheers Froyle
@@FroyleArt It was concentrate and I sprayed it. The weather wasn't cold. Maybe an errant bottle of Citrisolv. I'll keep trying because I love the results you got.
@@barbarakangas3255 that is so weird? You did everything right, definitely try another bottle, it is worth the effort. When it works the papers are amazing! 😄 cheers! 😘
Yes, sometimes you have to experiment and sacrifice a few papers! But your earlier efforts were spectacular! They are beautiful, many thanks for the downloads!
I wonder if other cleaning solvents or lubricants would work? Like Goo-Gone or Simple Green (I’m in the USA btw). I’ve also seen videos of people doing acrylic paint pouring where they add silicone oil to the paint which creates “cels” or round bubble shapes in the paint as it dries. One painter I follow even uses lubricant meant for exercising machines! I have some Goo-Gone here at my house and always have stacks of old magazines and catalogs; I should give it a try and see how it goes.
Give it a try! 👍🏼 but just know I haven’t found any other solution to work & I have tried many! 😆 but pls let me know if you do find one to work! 😘 cheers Froyle
I haven't been able to access National Geographic magazines, but I purchased a book from the op shop which has beautiful glossy paper and very colourful photographs. It's called Living World published by Dorling Kindersley, and has lots of nature photographs. Do you think this would work? I have repurposed the cover to make a travel journal, so just have the book block.
I don’t think so. I have only found National Geographic magazines to work with the citrasolve, all the best with your creative adventure 👍🏼 cheers Froyle
Citrisolve is easy to get. I can’t find National Geographic. But wow does that work cleaning the cooktop hood and the inside of the glass toaster oven door.
I tell ya what I'm thinking (for what it's worth...not alot🧐) The WD40 was so wet that it leeched through to your CS pages when you closed the book and interfered with the process preventing Froyling! ❣️Hugs Lisha
Oh yes great theory! 👍🏼 I like it! But the horrible cold winter is taking it’s toll! I think it was too cold & the citrasolve just didn’t dry properly, so I’m doing the next experiment when it is warmer again, I’m going to test magazines from different years 👍🏼 cheers
WD-40 is a lubricant to keep things from squeaking. You use it for office chairs that have squeaky parts. Or to lubricate rusting parts that need to move together. Does that make sense?
This is the first time I have watched one of your videos and it won’t be the last. Every time you laugh, I have to laugh with you. 😂 Your demeanor is so good for taking the stress out of trying new techniques.
so glad you shared your experiment. I find the odors of any of these too overpowering to even try it out even though I recently was given a pile of Nat Geos. I think I'll just use the digital prints you are offering!! Thanks for always delightful videos.
It will be difficult to find another product with such a high concentration of D.Limonen. I did some research and in France, these are products for professional use in the industry. Moreover, citrasolv is not found in France because it is declared toxic for the skin, eyes ... I tested with a few drops of citrus essential oil. the cheapest (400 euros per liter 😮). It seems to work but I don't want to sell my house 🤣😂
You are so brave! WD 40 and CitriSolve fumes both kill me! I do use Citrisolve in the backyard with a mask. But, I wonder if Goop oFF would work on any of the pages? Anything with fumes of death might work. Just a thought. I wear a full respirator often. I like my last brain cell. Big wink and hug!
Froyle, this may help. I live in the US and do quite a bit of shopping on Amazon. I have to buy my Citrisol from Amazon. Can't find it anywhere in my area. I do pay a monthly fee of, I believe, $14.95 for free shipping on any item or items during the month. Their price has gone up, which is a bummer, but I do a lot of buying from A. If you do use Citrisol often, it might just be the ticket to bite the bullet and pay the price. I have also done some research for an equivalent, but no go. Froyle, I know I have told you before, but I am in love with your personality. You make me laugh and when I make a large boo boo in my collaging, I conjure up your laughter and "no worry" comments, take a deep breath, grab a glass of wine, light my scented candle and slide back into my creative mold--pretending your sitting next to me :) and off to the races again.
Oh I love it!! Tell me as many times as you like! 😂 haha! We all need to be encouraged! Thanks for joining me, I imagine you are right there with me in the studio! 👍🏼 see you next week! Cheers Froyle
From what I've understood, it is the special clay coated papers that work and those are not used in the front advertising section. They probably have changed the inks, too. I know that the newer soy ink printed newspapers do not make windows shine like they used to.
@@FroyleArt Exactly! I have tried some Amazing! Solvent, I think it's called, from Dollar Tree without much movement and I do have a fresh bottle of the good stuff - just need to do it outside! TOO hot now!
