I beg to differ. Any old camera that’s well maintained will keep on working regardless of age. New digital cameras will brake way before any well taken care of older camera.
The key part there is "well maintained" The people who can do that are few and far between and becoming more scarce with few resources to learn or know how to repair them. Why do you think Pentax is taking such a long time to build a new film camera? they have to relearn the tech because it's so outdated there aren't enough resources still around. And yes an old film camera will outlast the vast majority of modern cameras as well because they were built to last and today they are built to be cheap. BUT they will always just make new cameras instead because it's cheaper and more profitable.
I live in Dallas and there’s 1 camera repair shop left and 1 guy who does it and it has to be a common camera… nothing obscure like a PETRI rangefinder. Basically you have to buy 5 broken cameras to keep 1 going. Or spend $8k on a new Leica…
I own several 3d printers, what I print the most is adapter to put 120 film in antique cameras who take 616, 118 or 122 film… I have printed many lens boards for my mpp 4x5 camera even prototyped a part to make the rangefinder working again but need to improve the design. That’s the beauty of this things, if you know or learn how to design on a software like fusion360 you can almost produce what you want…
I have 2 classic vintage Olympus OM-1's for sale. They are pretty much perfect in every way and someone needs to enjoy them. Have a few accessories too. Lenses. My father bought them to take astrophotography images. One looks like it was never used.
What I find interesting is 3d adapters that will allow instax film to be used on medium and large format cameras. I am assuming with better glass optics and adjustable shutter speeds and aperture settings, I'd get considerably better results.
To an extent yes. I’ve actually shot Polaroid on a Hasselblad before. I’ve seen several iterations of that type of setup but haven’t gone down that route yet
Still faily easy to find a good working rangefinder or film camera. The problem is still the price of the film. $25 for a portra400, then 15$ development. Insane.
For sure, still easy but it comes down to how long they will last and be moved around till there’s none left. Obviously not an immediate issue this is fair ahead in the future and just a topic of conversation. But yes. Film is insane right now
Great video. I have been 3D printing for years, but was really surprised when I saw a camera on ebay with a printed cap for the battery compartment. It looked really good.

I think a lot of people will shift to B&W for now. hopefully once they catch up with production pricing will change. or companies like Cinestill will produce more and innovate to drive costs down.
Interesting topic. I agree that the 3D printers will really help the hobby, but I disagree that film would ever die. The equipment is just too beautiful, and the process of B&W darkroom is just too fun. There are literally millions of bags or old camera gear sitting in closets and attics all over the world, just waiting to become valuable enough to be considered for sale by their owners. I still have my 4x5 Speed Graphic with a 135 Zeiss lens from 1920 that I don't use, but can't bear to part with. It needs a little bellows work, and shutter service, but otherwise is great. I bought it for one project of architectural photography in 1970, used it a few more times for portrait work, and haven't touched it since 1990.
Just an opinion. There are countless popular cameras thrown out or decaying beyond repair in Attics. Every year there are less and less without production. It may be a ways off.. but I wouldn’t say it’s it’s impossible it would never die. I don’t think it will, but I wouldn’t say impossible. Who ever thought we would be using “digital” cameras instead of film to begin with? Time changed things.
@@graham_white sadly, you are likely right about the terrible conditions in attics and basements, but my work with antique and vintage musical instruments does give me hope.
You may be able to print a half frame “frame” to slide inside between the film and the body but you would have to modify the advance to activate at half the distance in order to use the shutter. That part could be complicated. Either different size gears or something
They have! I’ve printed a Goodman zone and it’s great. I can’t remember the name of the pinhole panoramic camera but it also looks rad. Also cameradactyl creates some great stuff.
