You either love or hate this pedal. Either way, you can find cheap metal zones everywhere, the Simple Dog mod takes out the filter that gives it the nasally, shrill characteristic and turns it into a completely flexible tone machine. I took me 5 minutes to do the modification, I simply snipped components C35, C25, and C24 on the circuit. Easy Peasy. No soldering required! What do you think?

I did this mod and added a 5mm big green LED, too. It sounds very good! It sounds good as a boost to another drive pedal, too if you leave the gain all the way down and boost some of the mids and some volume. It also sounds good for tightening up fuzz pedals like a big muff if you put it before the fuzz pedal.

Sending this pedal into the return of the effects loop is the best I have ever heard any pedal (or pre-amp) sound. Its my go-to for everything. Not sure this mod can make it better except you get to tweak your preamp section as you by-pass the pre-amp & eq section plugging into the effects loop only. But its worth it!

boss pedals modded are some of the best pedals on the market and give a straight professional tone, if combined with the right combination of gear like silktone instrument cable, graphtech pick, nyxl or stringjoy strings and mercury magnetics adapter cable etc. you can get a GREAT PROFESSIONAL tone in a LIVE setting every time, mark my word

After the mod, it sounds like the Metal Zone had turned into a RAT type distortion pedal. I prefer the original metal zone. Sounds better when connected to effects loop.

@@mottosierra1372 it's the same mod like others, f.e. Wampler's mods. Main case - to remove C35, and if you prefer to tune nasal one to next step - remove C25 and/or C24.

An old Mesa Boogie Studio .22+. I like that amp for pedal demos because the clean channel is pretty neutral sounding.

Thanks! There’s plenty of guitarists better than me giving free lessons already, so I won’t dip my toe in that arena yet lol. One tip for phrasing I’ll throw out there though: think of it as singing. Try to keep phrases about as long as a singer can go on one breath. This is what I aim for, not always successful, but it’s what I aim for.

Hey I just did this mod and my pedal keeps losing almost all power. It’ll play and sound good for a second but then lose almost all volume. Any idea what I did wrong? I cut both legs out from the capacitor and took them right out could that be it?

The mod isn't necessary. The nasal quality is coming from the hi frequencies from the hi knob. I get pretty amp like qualities with it turned completely off with the mid set anywhere from noon to max. I don't use much gain. It sounds heavily distorted at 11pm. Doesn't need anymore than that. All that is needed is a boss ns2 noise suppressor.

yeah, Im just found a Spanish guy telling to put the parametric to 5K and cut the angry bees noise, with an EQ pedal after we can use on clean channel

Snipping is fine if you never plan on reversing the modification. If you want the option to put the pedal back to stock, then you’ll want to carefully desolder the components.

Yes it does. This mod pretty much removed a filter in the circuit that gives it the nasally sound they’re known for. But without it you have a distortion pedal with all the gain you could want and a powerful EQ.
