We picked up this 79 C30 in Spearfish South Dakota with a hurt engine and instead of doing the sensible thing like put it on a trailer we decided to drive it 1200 miles back home to East Texas.
My uncle had a 79 Chevy crew cab dually in this color. His had a 454 in it. He had it new and got rid of it at almost 20 years old and a half a million miles. We always called it the big green monster.
Good job fixing on the old truck so far...smart choice replacing all the tires and painting the wheels and putting that fancy aluminum radiator in the truck..
I've been there before Id be willing to bet you have a pin hole in a piston. It has to be small otherwise it would have been like my dodge and pump the oil out the tailpipe super fast. But if it made it 1200+ miles shes definitely a keeper worthy of a rebuild of the highest level
I was told that #8 was the dead cylinder so I went off what I was told.....however he was thinking that #8 was on the driver's side. Young kid still learning.
She's getting a new lease on life now. I put another 350 in it the week after we got home. We have a 454/4L80E, all new door/window seals, lowering kit, etc for it.
Bought a 79 Chevy c30 dually crew this summer it’s been swapped already with a 12v Cummins she runs excellent mated to a TH400 with gear vendors overdrive on the tail shaft paid $1,000 in same shape basically
I had 2 OBS GMC’s in the 70’s. Both std cabs, 4x4’s, 3/4 ton, 350 engines, one full time 4x4 with auto trans and the other with manual 4 speed. Both of them would get 10 mph. Didn’t make any difference if they were idling or running down the road. Also had a 3/4 ton, 2wd, 1983 Square Body that improved a little, getting 11-12 mpg.
Sucks when you cant swap a engine on the road... when i bought my dually i actually was looking at another one with no engine or trans... and i wanted to you tube an engine insatall out on the road meeting people and friends along the way... then i called my tow guy i have used in the past and he said he had same truck running and driving for $500 more so i bought it and after 2 years of sitting, i put in my semi trailer and took home
I think the good old boy can put a cap on all respecthat's not necessary I'm sure you can get it figured out man... It's Harpin on the man it's just a radiator cap a good old boy can get it done is a big strong man
