*EDIT 11/2022:* (Original comment at bottom, with actually useful information for people having audio issues) Some folks have expressed feelings about this song that come from a place of love (which I greatly appreciate) but I think I should respond to: If you got the idea that I "hate my fans" or something from this song, that ain't true! As I've said onstage, I genuinely like and relate to y'all, and the *vast* majority I've met have been *unusually* kind people. The idea that "Will Wood fans suck" bums me out, cause it's not my fans, it's online fan culture in general that causes trouble. There have been some super difficult experiences, yeah, but the rare troublemakers are no more common in my "fandom" than any other, are members of other fandoms as well, and don't make me hate my work. Sure, *some* experiences have harmed me and that is *part* of why I'm going to be taking my hiatus once the live album is out, but that's not really what this song was ever meant to be about. To me, it was always just about my own internal garbage. This also isn't some disavowal of my old music; I still play that stuff, and it being more "chaotic" isn't because of some old persona I'm trying to escape or my mental health journey (the character work I used to do was never built into the music, it was just stage and interview fun!) but just because those are the sounds I wanted to make at the time. I make no promises I'll never shout or freak out on record again! Art is subjective, so interpret the song as you'd like, but some interpretations seem to be affecting expectations for anything I might put out in the future and how people feel about their fellow fans, so I figured I'd clarify. It's just a half-sarcastic piano ballad where I (mostly) jokingly say "I hate you kids." Be kind to each other, don't worry about me, and don't worry so much about yourselves - the jerks don't care about whether or not they're jerks. Much love y'all. P.S. I know my sense of humor can be pretty dry but people have *apologized* for laughing as if the lyrics weren't full of dad jokes and I didn't do pelvic thrusts and pelt myself with tomatoes. Some of y'all gotta stop taking my stuff so seriously, things can be sad and still have humor! 🐀 *Original comment:* People are wondering what's wrong with the sound on this. Inverted frequencies are cancelling each other out between the left and right sides, so that if you listen in mono a whole spectrum of sound is lost. If the vocals sound tiny and distant and super echo-y to the point where you can't really hear the song, check your audio settings and make sure you're listening in stereo. You might think to yourself, "William, why would you do that?" To which I say, "it's a metaphor for how if you can't look at or process ideas from two opposing perspectives at once, you'll never understand my work." Which would be a pretty cool way to talk yourself out of a mastering error that it's too late to fix.

This definitely feels different. The Normal Album touched on mental issues that all needed to be talked about; the schism between patients and therapists, trouble with identity, inability to form a sexual identity, etc. All topics I'm sure Will'd had to deal with before, but they're definitely written from an outside perspective, or at least not interpreted by most as what was intended. This? This is genuine Will Wood. This isn't about some theoretical daughter that doesn't actually exists, this is about the man singing behind the piano, and it honestly hurts how tangible it feels. If the whole new album sounds like this, it'd have to be considered a genuine masterpiece.

This song is incredible but I can’t help but be concerned with how much money Will must’ve put into buying tomatoes for this vid. At 3:29 I counted 39 tomatoes, the average price of 1 pound of tomatoes in the us is $2.20. A pound of tomatoes is usually 3 tomatoes, meaning if we divide 39 by 3 then that means Will spent at least $28.06 on this shot alone. Assuming he didn’t just reuse the tomatoes for the sake of the bit, let’s count how many tomatoes there are in each shot with tomatoes in it. 1:31 - 14 tomatoes, $8.08 1:37 - 5 tomatoes , $3 1:40 - 4(?) tomatoes, $2 1:44 - 11 tomatoes, $8 1:53 - 73(!!!) tomatoes, $52.08 (assuming all the shots in this area are done with no tomatoes being added or removed) 1:57 - 37 (roughly) tomatoes, $27 2:22 - assuming this is the same as the previous shot but I didn’t see the tomato tower in the previous shot so adding on 4 tomatoes, $2 2:31 - 8 tomatoes, $4 2:38 - 52 tomatoes, $38 3:01 - 4 tomatoes, $2 3:32 - yeah uh…I can’t count that :( 3:49 - 8 tomatoes, $4 4:01 - 62 tomatoes, $45 (ik this is a repeat of a previous shot but this is the one we see most the tomatoes in) 4:16 - 24 tomatoes, $17.06 In total, this adds up to 306 tomatoes, which would be $224.04, not accounting for the stair tomatoes. I’m 3 years late so nobody will probably see this but at least I got a sense of self satisfaction determining how much Will spent on tomatoes.

Gonna be real, I had no idea other Will Wood fans were so horrible. I just like the music and respect his musical abilities (his piano playing is amazing, and his lyrics are really good). Why can't people just let people who make music be people with their own identity??

The 'guess I'm just selfish' line is really impactful to me. I may be reading too much into it, but the other lyrics of the song already indicate that Will Wood regrets the false self that he portrayed in SELF-iSH, which makes this lyric seem to me like it laments the 'spooky piano man' that some people still see him as in a clever, yet subtle, double-entendre.

I love the imagery of tomatoes being the one safe thing in the room with all the mouse traps, and then being turned into weapons at the end was ingenious. Also that scene where he woke up and just seemed to know where the traps were felt oddly relatable. Like a room full of mouse traps just evokes a kind of "damn, Monday again" type feeling.

Will, haven’t listened yet, it hasn’t premiered yet but read the lyrics in the description and you don’t owe anyone anything, you don’t have to be anyone or anything for anyone else, ‘cos you’re more than just “the screamy guy who plays piano with his feet”, you’re more than an aesthetic, you’re a goddamn human being and you don’t owe us shit just ‘cos we listen to your music.

This is kinda hard to hear tbh, knowing there are people out there who view him as some robot who’s only purpose is to serve and satisfy others, going as far as to harass and completely disregard his boundaries rather than viewing him as a living breathing human being with emotions and needs like everyone else is so disturbing It’s sad to see that Will has to even ask to be seen as a person and not a machine

I was so scared you would pander to your audience like everyone else, or just go off the grid, I love your music, no matter how it changes, so long as you're in it, you're actually singing, not just saying the words, I will always happily be a part of this community

This kind of stuff honestly makes me feel bad for liking Will's art and music. I'm a teenager who has social media and subconsciously stereotypes people by their more famous work. To the point where I am honestly scared to be in the community. But I'm still greatful that Will is standing up to the whole "that" part of his fan base and fame as a whole and how it affects someone. Good song Will, can't wait to hear the next one!

This guy... I learned about Will literally yesterday from Spotify. Every song of his I listened to made me say "Jesus Christ" right after. His songs are so...wow. And now this song. Once again...wow. Whatever Will decides, I hope he still does some form of art. But if not, I hope he finds the peace of mind he longs for. What a guy.

Honestly, this man could make a song with only tambourines and I would still listen to it. He just sounds good, no matter the genre. He can throw out the lipstick, the funky tunes, all of it. He would still have that same Will Wood sound.

Goddamn. Of course I love EIAL and self-ish from the bottom of my heart, but I'd never bash him for evolving and changing. Even if he has changed, his style of composing music is still very similar. I still love this song, even if it isn't keyboard smashing and screaming. What hasn't changed is that he is still just as great of a singer/songwriter as he was when he wrote EIAL, and he sure as hell got better. While I did and still do like those eras, I will follow Will's music as long as he is happy and being himself. What I’ve liked about Will Wood’s songs was the genuineness of them. They were all part of a strange, beautiful, wonderful thing. Kinda like people in general. I remember reading the comments on I/Me/Myself and seeing all the stuff about transgenderism. That wasn’t what Mr. Wood intended when he wrote it and him telling people about it pissed those people off. It’s good to see a bit of yourself in a song, even if it wasn’t intended but shitting on someone because it doesn’t exactly fit your worldview just because you think it should is fucking disgusting. Same with anyone trying to force their ideas onto others especially for music, y’know an interpretive and expressive medium that can mean anything and nothing at the same time. I’m looking forward to whatever comes next in whatever package it comes in. Sorry about the bad eggs, hopefully the rest of us can make up for that.

Man, when I first listened I found this song to be... depressing? But since reading through what this song means and processing that over the past two days I've really come to appreciate it for what it is - a brand new chapter for Will's music and Will himself. I'm not going to deny that I'm a little upset that the chaotic, harsh and loud nature of Will's past music won't be following him into this new era (or at least not as strongly as it did previous), but at the end of the day Will isn't making music for me personally and I think I've come to accept that (I could go on a whole tirade about how capitalism drives that mindset but I won't for brevity's sake). Goddamn though, I'm so proud of Will for taking this step in breaking away from the things that held him back from making and being something that he knows actually represents him rather than just appealing to an audience. Quite honestly, It’s kind of sad that a lot of people slept on this song. I think it’s a good thing to know now that Will’s expressing himself in a way he wants to after his past experiences, despite fan criticism. I think it also benefits we as the audience. The very moment I heard Will's early works I was completely, madly in love with them. But, honestly, the thing I'm in love even more is creators being happy with what they are doing. It makes me annoyed to think that a lot of Will Wood's fans around my age keep pushing their ideals onto him and keep trying to mark him as trans when he isn't (I'm trans myself and it just really pisses me off), sexualizing him, wanting him to be the person he was during Self-ish, and generally ignoring that he's human not some fictional character. People seem to forget that artists and celebrities they enjoy are people, not objects they can project their ideals and wants on to. No wonder the dude hates social media, I hope he's doing okay this is clearly impacting him pretty negatively.

A beautiful song that really just cuts at how some people seem to take the process of going through mental health issues as "quirky" when in actuality, that was just a part of a person's life that wasn't really...them. Fandoms can be so weird like that. I'm really sorry that that happened to you with some of your fans, Will. I just wanna say, I found will this year and luckily I didn't fall into the trap of "Will is just this lipstick-wearing screamy guy." Although it might have something to do with my affinity with other "weird" bands like tally hall and lemon demon, I feel like Will is the most open with how he feels about, and, I'll be honest, I wasn't sure if I was ready for a more personal approach, but dang. I remember being incredibly alienated by your fans a while ago, wherein many of the very sad or message heavy songs (lyrically) were just being degraded to funi-scream-drag-music. This song kind of makes me little happier for not interacting with them. However the fact they even exist is just very sad to begin with. As many have said, seeing you be yourself and not caving in for anyone is the best thing an audience could ask for, so please take care of yourself.
