Anyone notice views for long form videos going down after posting shorts? Would creating a separate channel for shorts help preserve the view growth for the long form videos?
My views and watch time tanked when I started posting shorts. I went in and delegated most of them. I think they were causing the algos to start recommending my channel to young people as they mostly watched the shorts. However, people who watch my long form videos are older. I dint know for sure but it really seams to have caused my ad rev and views in longer vids to tank. Hopefully it builds back up.
The problem is that the content I make doesn't work for Shorts. I could probably figure out a way to make it somewhat 'work' but it just wouldn't fit the formula. I *definitly* feel my channel is slowly but surely losing more and more views over time ever since they've been pusing shorts. And, of course, the revenue crashed even harder. I mean, as an advertiser how could you *not* jump ship and just ditch longer videos when everyone is no longer watching videos longer than 5 or 10 seconds. I don't understand it, but I'm also starting to be part of the 'older' guard that simply can't get along this new craze. I hope someday people will start craving some more educational videos and longer-form content again that isn't pure clickbait or totally meaningless copy-paste (I don't know how many times I've seen a video with "click here on this dot in the circle you won't believe what you'll see" and it's pure garbadge).
I don't like shorts. I like your channel because of the mix between education an entertainment. Shorts moves that towards entertainment. Pleas continue with your longer videos and put your focus on that.
Loved this video. I think shorts have their place and that they are here to stay (at least for a while longer) and I absolutely love that RU-vid made a special tab for them. Before, every time I went on my channel or other....it was just a mess when I would click on "videos".
As a consumer, I want education and not entertainment. I tried watching shorts and at the present time, I can't be bothered with them. I think it's going to be difficult to present anything other than entertainment in that format. Creators need to target a wider set of consumers and not just old curmudgeons like me. At least now the shorts are on a separate list.
And I think that's exactly what RU-vid seems to understand now. Consumers who don't want to be bothered by shorts won't be and creators who do want to make Shorts can do so without being worried that it'll hurt their channel or annoy a part of their audience...
The issue I have with posting shorts to my main video feed, is the portrait mode rather than landscape, which is what longer videos are filmed as. Aesthetics are important and i think can make a really professional looking channel, look cheap.
I agree with ya man! Since I've started posting shorts on my gaming channel I've gotten a lot more overall traffic, not just on the Shorts, but also on other videos. Great video as always! Cheers dude!
I understand RU-vid is following this trend. At the end people will spend more time on RU-vid, that’s what they care about. From a personal perspective, I don’t like watching or producing them. I just don’t see the value. Hope that channels who don’t follow this trend don‘t get pushed back too much. RU-vid is different from IG or TikTok and I hope it will remain its character. That’s why it is loved by so many users.. They shouldn’t do the same mistake like IG trying to be a platform for everything. But that’s exactly where they going right now. I’m fine with that, as long as long term video content will always be priority!
They already are. They're completely ditching channels not following suit. I've not yet tried Shorts consistently and my views have slowly but surely died down, and the revenue about 4 times faster. I feel like my channel have been cast aside and that RU-vid (or its algorithm) would rather have me stop posting videos unless I start doing Shorts.
I watch RU-vid for entertainment or to learn something. If I watch a SHORT, I just get started watching and it is finished, how disappointing! When I am trying to learn how to do something, SHORTS are not long enough for me to learn ANYTHING! For me when I click on a SHORT by accident, I ALWAYS stop the video and put a "thumbs down" on it and move on, it was that much time waisted. I am 71 years old and I do not have the time to waist.
I just got done with my daily 8k walk run, I do like RU-vid shorts, they are a great tool to promote upcoming videos or cover a topic that wouldn't fill up a full video. I've done a few myself. Honestly for me at 60 I'm not really interested in watching a long video unless it something I'm really interested in LOL I don't even watch long movies anymore, you could treat the shorts like a movie trailer a teaser of what is coming up.
I feel like shorts and everything similar are destroying attention spans, so I feel like I shouldn't help make them more popular. But I also feel like there is just no way around them and then making content that improves people's lives is valuable. Which of my selves is going to win the argument? We'll find out shortly...
You Should Only Make Shorts From scenes in your Long Content and try to make them 1 Of these three things Funny, Engaging or Informative. If you make shorts from scratch and they aren't relevant to your long Content, then create a different channel for your shorts and maybe promote your long content every now and again on that separate channel.. What you've got to remember is Whatever the short is about it is going to target that audience..
Short form content isnt going to go anywhere anytime soon since most people don't share your genuinely noble thoughts, so I'd just go for it and try to provide value. If people are gonna watch shorts anyway, you can add more valuable shorts to YT
Ever since RU-vid introduced shorts. Long videos keep losing impressions. and views. In all my channel. It is normal if part of the spectators are watching the shorts. But the shorts. they make little money. Maybe even in the future. Traffic is only moving to something where creator make less money. if each creator has only 1 minute to talk it becomes more easily an "undifferentiated commodity".
@@JorisHermans 🤣🤣🤣 "ALL HAIL KING JORIS" 👑 ... and, personal opinion but, your intros and outros are always cool man - as is your content on the whole 🤘. And no, I'm not "sucking up" to the king - I'm just giving my opinion......to the king (*bows head as he backs away) 🤣🤘
I was just having this convo with my wife tonight because neither of us watch shorts and like you I look at my ROI and it just doesn't show compared to long form, but.....if they can help each other maybe I'll knock one out tonight.
Hemm Joris, shorts zijn een concurrentie. zoals je zegt. maar de inhoud is tamelijk leeg. Ik kan niet ontkennen dat ik veel meer views krijg. En ik krijg meer subscribers... SO..... doorgaan idd
If you can pull in new subscribers from shorts, they're much more likely to look through & watch your long-form videos. I hated them at first, but I have a tiny channel and they've really helped.
Very interesting. I’ve also uploaded a few shorts and also let RU-vid make shorts from my longer videos 😬 and I don’t get a lot of views on them, yet I hope. But I can’t tell if it’s been good for my channel or not.
I read "epic" novels and series. I like in-depth conversations with friends. I appreciate deep-dives, and seek out full-length documentaries. I read the "full" reviews of things and skip the "TLDRs" entirely. My tongue is firmly in my cheek here, but I'm not the audience for Shorts - I just don't like them, personally. I love your channel, Joris, and I will continue to watch it and spread the word about your work, but I'm just not going to watch Shorts on your or any channel. I don't like the way all sorts of different media are pushing and herding us towards all this mini content - as if there were any actual value to it. Becoming a culture of bites rather than depth. Again: I will continue to watch and support your longer-form content - and I'm not criticizing your move toward Shorts, I'm just not going to watch them.
I mean... Im not a fan of shorts but I think I need to outgrow my old mentality and make love to them. In.. a creative way. Im pretty certain I actually found your channel on...drumroll... shorts. I barely use them as time is precious and you get sucked in but was having a camera reviews conundrum and found your channel. Been watching since so.. yeah. they work. Time to get to work.
They've even got a site to read books in 15 minutes. Basically cliff notes. Read War and Peace in 15 minutes. Whatever happened to attention spans. Take care of that cut.
I’ll be honest I really don’t care for shorts. I can count on my hand of how many I’ve actually watched. But, they seem to be the new spam of RU-vid feeds. I like my different media platforms not all being the same.
You are limiting your scope of inquiry. It depends on the type of contents in the videos too. Some contents I prefer watching are vlog like videos, such as travel VLogging or story telling. Teaching videos I often find I don’t have the time to take in, now matter how useful the contents might be. So I have tendency not to watch then n there, but schedule this under the ‘watch later’ playlist. Shorts contents, no matter what in them, are short, lot less fluf, and creators are forced to get to the point quicker, sometimes in under 10 seconds I nearly skipped this video because in my 24 hour day, I don’t always have time to absorb another teaching / learning video. No offence meant. You do create go, useful videos, and why I have chosen to keep this subscription after a recent purge I did of subscription. Basically, I feel you are interesting, relevant, I’m willing to spend a percentage of my time. Even to post this comment I hope this is useful / constructive feedback from one busy creator to another
I agree with you. Interesting, although a different niche I also see my top shorts views from India. Shorts does allow me know to make short fast clips that did not reach the main video. Let me explain. You drive with a car over something. Do it with 20 cars and put it in a video. It will get boring. But now I can put say 5 in the main video and create 15 shorts from the others without it getting boring because it is only one short clip.
