Fantastic compilation. I've always had a soft spot for "What do we do on a dew-dew-dewey day" - it's not a flashy number, just well played, and I absolutely loved that tempo for Rhapsody in Blue - it is much more danceable than the original composition
Great collection, Colin. Never heard "New Hampshire Highway" before - lovely. I would really like to know who the hot alto player is on some of these titles, particularly Speedy Boy. He's excellent. That version of Rhapsody In Blue was new to me too - taken at a lovely, unexpectedly laid back pace...it swings in a delightfully jaunty fashion!
Thanks Nick! I'm not sure who the alto player is on "Speedy Boy" but I really like him too! Jimmy Dorsey makes quite a few appearances throughout this set of recordings, including a fine clarinet solo on "What a Wonderful Wedding That Will Be" and some killer alto on "Where the Shy Little Violets Grow." Michael McQuaid pointed out to me that he was a bit over-recorded on that one meaning we get to hear even more of his wonderful sound.
