Willard Scott started as an NBC page in 1950. Now, after a remarkable 65 years at the network, 35 of them at TODAY, he is heading off into retirement. But before he does, the TODAY anchors gather to look back at highlights of his long career, and former first lady Barbara Bush and former TODAY film critic Gene Shalit pay him special personal tributes. Al Roker is with Willard in Virginia as Matt Lauer reveals that Rockefeller Plaza has been officially renamed Willard Scott Way for the day. Then the anchors raise a glass and sing “Happy Trails.”

Thanks to Willard Scott, I was able to cure my life long affliction with Stage Fright ! Weekly I was required to speak before crowds as large as 800 here in Orlando and it was terrifying as I was practically immobilized with the fear that I would make mistakes. I had always been a major fan of Willard. I loved how he could mess up, miss pronounce or otherwise stick his foot in his mouth and laugh about it and go on, So, I went out before my audience one morning pretending I was Willard Scott, who was there to have fun and didn't particularly give a damn if he screwed up. I accepted that I, personally was a nervous wreck, but Willard wasn't afraid of nothing. He would screw up, then laugh at himself and people loved him. This worked well for me,, and I cannot Thank Willard for being Willard enough. We all miss You, Mr. Scott, you bought much needed Sunshine into our lives and represent the very best of the best in everything You did ! Thank You for making the world a Happier, Brighter place !

Before Today, he did the weather for Channel 4 news in Washington, DC, he was funny there too. We traded weather forecasters with Today and got Bob Ryan who a weather geek, he said "Well get involved with the community, but not baking cakes", he got the local residents to be "Weather watchers" and help him with the weather.

I had to dig back and watch some happy moments on Today after watching the show on this past week. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and my mom and grandparents had the show on every morning. Then watching all the Thanksgiving Day parades with the Today host was a tradition. I mourned with Savannah and Hoda as they announced the news. Hopefully the show producers dig back in the archives and watch footage like this and really dig to find the kind of journalist that we know and love like family and make the show great again. What is great is how Willard keeps deflecting the attention away from himself each time they keep talking about how much he meant to the show. That in turn is what made Willard great.

I didn't know that Willard Scott played Ronald McDonald the very first Ronald McDonald that I could remember. Because I can tell you this much right now not only was Willard Scott the first Ronald McDonald but back in 1950 when he first started with NBC at that time we didn't know who he was. I didn't know who he was until 1968. But here it is 2021 and will all remember Mr scott. He was always funny he was witty but he sure knew about the weather. That's why he is going to be sorely missed. That's why I used to watch him every Thanksgiving Day parade and I think sometimes I used to watch him on the today show. But you know without the day show being around there would never be a Willie Scott that's right there would never be a Willard scott. But thank God there was one for 65 wonderful years. Basically he was just 5 years short of a man named Don pardo who worked with NBC for 70 years until his death in 2014 at the age of 96. But all I can say for is Long live Willard Scott. Maybe they should be a street named after him. I mean in New York city. A really nice street named after Willard scott. I think that would be appropriate.

I didn't know he passed away. In the mid 80's the Today show had a big cult following in Australia,..yummy Jane and funny Willard. I sent off a letter to NBC and to Willard in particular saying how much we loved him and the show in Australia. He actually sent me back a signed photo with his best wishes. I didn't expect that. In Australia we would call someone like Willard 'a top bloke'. A life lived to the full. R.I.P. Willard Scott.

Much of what he did in the later years were inserts from WRC TV in DC. Still fondly remembered in the DC area for his radio and tv work on WRC Channel 4 as Bozo, the 6 and 11 pm tv weatherman, the ORIGINAL Ronald Mc Donald, with the late Ed Walker as " The Joy Boys" on WRC radio as well as a stint as a mid day Top 40 DJ in the 1970s. Washington's Own..........

Willard you will be greatly missed. You blessed everyone who had the opportunity to ever watch him and especially if they were lucky enough to meet him in person. Growing up in Northern Virginia not far from Washington DC he was a staple in the lives of my siblings and I basically from birth. I wish that the various pictures had date stamps which would help with the timeline of his life and achievements. I don’t know if anyone has documented the stories of how he became Bozo the clown (Whoever took over as Bozo and the makeup kinda turned Bozo into a kinda creepy scary clown that looks very different to my memories of the friendly clown and I understand how little children would be a bit more scared of the clown in the later version.) Willard was a very happy and friendly clown. I hope that I can find out more about how Willard invented the Ronald McDonald character/clown.
