I have the 106.6 and have been working a bottle for about 8 months now. Everytime I go back to it, and I drink a lot of bourbons and mezcals in between, I’m amazed at how good it is. Not getting any dill, just the maple syrup and Granny Smith apples you mentioned. Great stuff.
The one note I get out Willet Rye that is entirely unique to any other rye I’ve tried, is rose pedals, like a bouquet of roses or walking through a rose garden 🥀 still my all time favorite rye to date!
Willett 4-year rye is one of my favorite whiskeys overall! Did not think I was a rye guy until I tried this, now it will be constantly on my shelf, esp. since I can find it at my local store in Palo Alto for $50!
Hey Drew, I haven't had your batch but I've got a 113.8 that I just opened and it's not minty or herbaceous at all. Lots of sweet caramel on the nose and sweet spice on the palate. Reminds me a little of Pikesville, which is not a bad thing. My first bottle I got when the 4yr first came out clocked in at 126 proof and it was a beast. One of the best ryes I've ever had. Easily on a par with Knob Creek cask strength rye.
This bottle doesn't get enough love. Maybe that's a good thing. I have a bottle at 112 proof and it is great! Mine has a lot of great rye spice and a good hit of mint with a ever so subtle dill (just a whisper). It has some nice mouth coating sweetness to balance it. Overall a great bottle that I can still get for about $60.
I have this batch and I really enjoy it! I told my local store and they asked how many more I want, so grabbed 2 backups. All at MSRP! I think they have more on shelf
Stopped at Willets after Heaven Hill on a Wednesday was a bust. Did the tasting and ended up trying them all. Was VERY surprised by how much better they've gotten. The iconic pot still bottle is now a wheated whiskey too. And good call on the egg salad sammich.
Such a great review. Here it is a year later and I just paid $78 for my first bottle of this juice. It’s 107.4 proof and I’m just tasting it. So it’s really interesting but kinda strange to a noob rye drinker. I’m thinking I’ll love it before it’s over.
Drew just picked up the WE 4 year old in Memphis last week. Very interesting and at first was not my jam but then out it on a rock and wow what a nice rye! Great videos and content! Keep it up.
Thanks Drew! Great review! Willet Rye has started...every so slowly...to show up now and again....however warning that some liquor stores will treat it like uber allocated and try to get double msrp.
I’ve never had Willet Rye, but I would love to try it. I tend to like the 95/5 ryes from MGP, and also high rye bourbons like Four Roses Single Barrel.
not a huge rye drinker but this is def one of 3-4 ryes that i always try to have at the house. unfortunately, this isnt distributed in MI... but my Chicago buddy sources for me when my bottle is getting low lol
I have a 114 proof that’s pretty taste and I tied a friends that is like 110 proof which had that wet hay/funky animal barn yard taste… so it is frustrating how it varies like that from a bottle to bottle. 🤦🏻 but when you find a great bottle buy several as you mention for sure!!!!
Ryes I have now: 2 WFE4 which I so LOVE WTRBR RRR6 RRR NR Balboa NRRSiB KentOwl Blue Run Golden Nulu TB All Sagamore Spirits Rye offerings (DO and CaskStrength 🔥 Etc
Yo Drew, love the videos, considering becoming a supporter on patreon - can you maybe do a vid (or let me/others know) what barrel picks are coming soon that members would get access to? Or what you see members having access to in the coming months/years?
Out of my collection. Its good, but my least favorite. Its very different. I can drink it. But so many better options. I wish that wasn't the case. Because i bought 2 bottles of this. I thought it would be better.
Too much $$$ in my location; Seattle. $87 @ Costco. It’s good, I like the style, a light and delicate expression. Just not worth the local yokel $$$’s.
