Maritsa is named after a river that runs through Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece. All three countries have had a substantial influence on my creative work. The region’s wonderful uneven meters and modal melodies form paths that I frequently use in my own music.
Maritsa opens and closes with lyrical and lush harmonies, alternating between ionian and myxolydian modes. The main body of work is an upbeat sections marked "with a gentle lift". Most of this is in 10/16, punctuated by a rising theme in 4/4 and a 6/8 figure that superimposes duple and triple time.
The ionian harmonies are interrupted by an austere phrygian theme, and the return home includes a codetta that uses contrasting harmonies.
William premiered Maritsa in Toronto with Joyce Lai on violin August 8th 2019 as part of Harbourfront's summer music in the Garden series.
