W. Eugene Smith many times using a simple flash setup and his personal film processing style gave his images a unique look that seems to bring a chiaroscuro look like one sees in the prints of Goya. He was certainly a cut above the rest.

Really a sad tale! Gene Smith simply went overboard in his work! Years on a week assignment Pittsburg. Minamata magnificently recorded, but impossible to watch. There is a movie about him! I quit after 15 mins!
I got a scholarship from Rockefeller Foundation in 1978 to apprentice with 'photographer of my choice'. I chose Smith but he refused, saying he doesn't take on such. I let go the offer to select anyone else
