William Finn - The Supreme Court Saved from Fire (From "Romance in Hard Times")

ROMANCE IN HARD TIMES tells the story of Hennie, a pregnant woman who refuses to have her baby until the world changes for the better. Set in a Depression-Era soup kitchen, William Finn's fantastic score mixes his signature style and lyrical density with period pastiche. Lillias White played Hennie, surrounded by a gaggle of colorful characters including her husband Harvey (Lawrence Clayton), her ne'er-do-well admirer Boris (Cleavant Derricks), ex-socialite and soup cook Zoe (Alix Korey), and even First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (Peggy Hewett).
Though it played at two different venues off-Broadway in 1989, a planned broadway transfer never materialized and the score was never recorded. Songs from the show have however been recorded on solo albums and reincorporated into several of Finn's revues.
