William Himes was conductor of the Salvation Army's Chicago Staff Band for a number of years and was also a prominent euphonium soloist. I first heard him at a T.U.B.A. (now ITEA) conference in 1978. He soloed with the Hollywood Tabernacle Band (SA) and amazed me with his tone that filled the room without sounding at all forced. I spoke to him then and more extensively later - what a nice guy! I THINK he has since retired from the leadership of the band, but I believe he still plays.
