Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring William Kentridge, from the "Compassion" episode in Season 5 of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.
"Compassion" premiered in October 2009 on PBS.
Filmed working in his Johannesburg studio with an opera singer and pianist, William Kentridge is shown creating a video projection out of torn paper choreographed to a Puccini aria recorded through a cell phone. The segment follows Kentridge’s interest in opera as he stages a video installation and performance at the Sydney Biennial in Australia. The segment also showcases a series of anamorphic films projected onto circular tabletops, with a mirrored cylinder at the center that reconstitutes the distorted image.
William Kentridge was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1955. Learn more about the artist at: art21.org/arti...

I first came across Kentridge's work at the Seattle Art Museum when I started working there in 2007; then a piece with the mirror was part of a Frye exhibition on puppets and animation; then saw his production of THE RETURN OF ULYSSES. Great to see his processes.

“The seriousness of play”. A very interesting film. I know he is South African but his voice is so reminds me of Anthony Hopkins.
