An interview with Nina Gryphon about the famous 17th century astrologer William Lilly and his book Christian Astrology.
Lilly published Christian Astrology in 1647, and it was the first major textbook on astrology that was written in English. Most western astrological texts were written in Latin up until that point in history.
The book has had a deep and enduring impact on astrology in the west over the past few centuries since it was published, and Lilly is usually regarded as one of the most influential figures in the western astrological tradition.
Nina has been studying Lilly's work for the past two decades, and in this episode we provide a detailed overview of his life and work.

Ah yes the forgotten William Lilly. There was also John Dee, 1527, the famous mathematician, philosopher, and Astrologer who was advisor to Queen Elizabeth I 1533. It was John Dee who advised the queen against the war with Spanish Armarda. Dee was also astrologer to the queen Mary Tuder. Around the same time as John Dee 1500, Nostradamus was in the patronage of Cathrine de Medici. Intresstingly, Lilly came some fifty years later after John Dee and Nostradamus.

Brilliant, thanks! One thing I'd like to emphasise for the sake of giving credit where credit is due is that, as far as I am aware, the publication of the Regulus edition which, as mentioned here, kick started the modern renaissance in traditional astrology, was motivated by the energy and enthusiasm of Olivier Barclay and it was she who obtained the original copy from a book dealer from which the facsimile was made for this edition.

I consider lillys considerations before judgements to be guides before judgeing rather than Rules. something to be aware off but not stopping use of the horary chart.

If you stick to the considerations before judgement, you're basically turning down business. This is certainly a "consideration before judgement" ;) I know of at least one prominent astrologer who has stated this as the reason always to judge a chart for a client.

Nauticum etc. should be better known as the longest extant weather Diary in the last half of the 17th century. November 11 1668 to Dec 31 1689, winds recorded from early May 1673. I have it transcribed. Have just published on Gadbury's errant wind (forthcoming in "Weather"). He gets a passing mention in a "A fair wind ... " in December 2021 "Weather." < published by Royal Met. Soc. (I get no cash benefits!). There is an unpublished Diary continuation to 1701 as well that I hope to have soon.

I’m still trying to form an opinion on if astrology and Christianity are compatible. The possible “ironically Christian” angle is interesting, while.. lost in thought on that. To me, it IS compatible because how I got into astrology in a deeper level is when Christian’s who were into astrology (some fairly deep) thought I was a libra surprised I was a Leo. Dull story, but the context was that I have absolutely no religious background and roll my eyes at it while also being extremely moral where Christian’s view me as more Christian than they are. There’s a big difference between being moral and ethical and righteous etc.. I have strong moral ethics and don’t struggle and if I leave it as that to let that be openly interpreted you’d likely make its point. I sort of want to leave it as that. I’ll narrow it down; a persons sexuality for example wouldn’t cause harm on anyone so it’s of no concern to me or should be to anyone else while I did argue with same sex marriage that marriage is a personal agreement that shouldn’t be recognized by government to begin with. A persons beliefs and religion shouldn’t be of concern to others unless it is actually causing harm to another which it does. It’s constitutionally considered an opinion and not fact; that’s where an issue comes in. In a previous comment I jokingly mentioned ufos and one looking like what’s called (religiously) an ophanim. I’ve said to ufologists that why I could see one up close and not care even with the view it’s what’s referred to as that is no one knows what that is so you can’t make an assumption which makes it something you file into “who the f knows?” and move on. What’s it matter? It doesn’t. I just went the Jungian route which is to interpret life as you would a dream where it’s symbolic instead of literal which is how the mind constructs reality anyways. Is Christianity compatible? Technically, yes, but not to a literal fundamentalist and there are tricky issues which are not actually biblical but further opinions. Yesterday I listened to Becca Tarnas describe Venus with how it interacts with other planets where I thought it was absolutely hilarious I actually have all those Venus properties. With mars, and Pluto. Prior to getting into astrology I used to let others listen to the song Want by Recoil and say “that’s my anima”. Venus conjunct mars and Pluto in LIBRA, it kind of actually is like that. I just liked the 😳 reaction especially with more Jungian new age types where it’s like the anima/animus archetype is some holy thing. Maybe, but with mars and Pluto in libra it may be quietly wishing/pushing your demise. As gracefully as possible. I also find listening to other astrologers sometimes that that side starts to surface when I view a style out of balance; part of why practicing concerns be because.. that aspect is with moon and Neptune etc.. if I get contrarian it can sometimes be extremely harsh especially with Mercury conjunct Saturn. Anyways… “you’ve possibly had 1,000 lives, why waste this one wishing you were in one of your others”. I think how it couldn’t be compatible is probably more human nature. Like saying those placements are in libra, it doesn’t have to be libra. It can be anything. Having aspects described where I’m all predictable doesn’t bother me, it may bother others. It’s difficult to not make assumptions because part of archetypes is the psychological need to compartmentalize everything. Reviewing Christian myths.. take the ophanim for example. Some texts say they were organisms and others say mechanical consciously linked to the cherubim and seraphim. The cherubim sort of exist as the highest angels as shaming humans for being of impure sin where astrology has a different attitude in some cases where.. more divine influence as opposed to fallen with barely any chance of redemption. I’m not completely enjoying listening to other astrologers as much though Tarnas is entrancing to listen to. Contrarianism.. even the things we see as “evil” are divinely influenced. It’s just proper integration. An issue I have with how astrology has become overly positive is it makes a person feel shame for darker/more hostile influences that represses them making them rear their heads worse. What I’m enjoying (even though it’s stressing me out at times) with the Pluto return of the US is everything is coming out in the open which means problems hidden can actually be looked at and discussed. “Bob in the copy room was at the insurrection!” At least you can figure out why they hold those views. When people jump on Joe rogan you have to wonder why they view others as inferior in terms of mental ability if a podcast can force their views on them. I don’t think Russia making memes about pizza actually made people vote for trump, no one is that stupid, but apparently some believe they are. Even though it doesn’t show in draw ups that Neptune is trine Mercury, it’s trine sun so it has to be. Hopefully that all made some sense. I think that’s about positivity actually causing more problems.. Nep tuna 🍣 In my head I’m thinking of all the horrible critical things I could randomly say about forms of astrology if that mars/Pluto/Saturn took over. 😝 I’ll probably be trying to figure out ways they can fully be compatible for a few days.

TL;DR, sorry. The "Christian" part of the title was political. There is little, if anything, inside referencing christian doctrine.

Yeah. If you look into the philosophy just behind Saturn, it’s easy to see how it’s tied to common religious myth today and why lily would redesign it. I think it’s even touched on in Plato’s allegory of the cave where there’s a sort of duality with Saturn related to ignorance where the cave and outside world are two different types. The cave is dogmatic ignorance, the outside is philosophical ignorance where the unknown is embraced. The core of the allegory has a lot to do with being open about breaking away from dogmas being potentially dangerous. I’m not certain early gnostic christians as dogmatic since their garden of Eden myth relates a lot to sympathy with Necessity as Sophia. The gnostics were wiped out.
